Alamogordo has a pop of around 32,000, elevation is around 4500'. High enough to catch some snow now and then. The German military moved out about 5 years ago. Maybe longer. Not a bad place to live. My mom's side of the family is from here. I would come out here in the summers when I was a little guy and coming from San Diego CA I preferred Alamogordo more. I moved here when I was 14 and tried to leave a couple times after graduating from high school here in the late 80s. Couldn't stay away. This is just home. It's quiet here for the most part, but we have had our moments. HAFB and WSMR put us on the map. Alamogordo weather is different compared to most of the surrounding areas. Being that we are in a basin we can have some severe weather during the summer monsoon season that includes microburst and tornadoes. We have all 4 seasons here with some exceptional weather and temperatures. It's been in the 100s in the summer and down to -5° in the winter. Fair weather for the most part year around. I ride a motorcycle year round here without any problems. There's this charm that Alamogordo has. It's small, but not too small. It's big enough to have everything you need and a huge hospital. Great place to retire. It's pretty safe here and some of the greatest people I've ever met are from here. Glad you like Alamogordo.

I grew up in Alamogordo. I went to La Luz Elementary, the old one, it's a headstart now, Yucca Elementary, and Chaparral jr high. I went thru there about 3 years ago. I have friends that still live there! I hope to visit again soon! When you go to Cloudcroft, you've got to stop and get some real cherry cider! It's so good!

I entered the USMC from HS. The combination of altitude, hot summer, and hiking mountain ranges made boot camp "entertaining" as opposed to stressful. I returned dropping quite a big of weight. The 4500 foot change to sea level was almost entertaining and refreshing as I felt immediately rested with the additional San Diego humidity. Your Chamber of Commerce added my name to its brick circle around the flag pole for my part of the Gulf War. The town mainstream is now pressing toward the other side of the Cloudcroft Hwy when I was there last. There was a vacant strip of land between the Hwy and Otero County Fairgrounds that is now densely populated with homes, etc. I watched the White Sands Mall finish building right around the time "Officer and a Gentleman" came out around 1982. Base reduction took most of the assigned population with it to other locations.

Hey rusty I was just here the other day, and it really is a nice town, I wouldn't mind living here, it has an awesome mountain view, and cloudcroft and other places are close by, I also heard the jets at the airforce base, I thought it was the missle range testing a missle at first.

When we were there..we moved away for 2 yrs.and had house up for sale to move back..even had a realtor..when he passed suddenly..if I still drove I would move back..but sadly Don t..was still a lot of exploring wanted to do..we loved the park..and small zoo..wonder if it's still there?

Thanks, I'm really considering buying a home here and wish there were lots more of these type of videos to give me a feel for the place. It's getting way too expensive where I'm at and I estimate 10 to 15 years till I can consider semi retirement so this city looks like it's large enough to keep me in employment for the next decade. The idea of working and saving from a paid for home vs renting is what I find appealing. I can also imagine when that retirement comes, driving up to the mountains for camping and stargazing will beat the heat in the summertime. Also the dry air makes swamp coolers a cheap alternative to A/C and proximity to Mexico makes for cheap perscriptions.

That book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People," by Dale Carnegie is a classic and part of my massive library. Curious as to your impressions of Alamogordo when you were there a decade ago. I'm considering a move there because I'm big into small towns, open spaces, a more unpretentious lifestyle than here in Southern Nevada. So I would appreciate your viewpoint. Not sure about the "trade-offs" of military versus Bureau of Land Management. Might be the same as Nevada, which is 85% possessed by the US Government/US Military.
