I'm a police officer. The behaviour of that officer was completely shocking and uncalled for and I hope the cammer put a complaint in because he needs a bollocking for that incident. Very very embarassing conduct. My colleagues need to remember that everyone's contact with Police can shape how they view us. This could have been the cammer's first ever real contact with Police and unfortunately it was needlessly negative, and now he may have a more negative perception of Police as a whole. What a shame.

I think the perception isn't aided by the behind-closed-doors nature of said bollockings. Were there a weekly section on local news saying "and this week, Bobby Plod badge number 90210 incorrectly admonished a driver for speeding due to not knowing how corners work, he was suspended for one week without pay", maybe showing bodycam footage or something, the general public would see "oh hey they actually ARE held to some sort of standard!" As it is now I bet most people, the cammer included, wouldn't even bother complaining about it 'cause there's no point.

And yet this is now the all too common experience most of us have with interacting with police. I've met good ones, but none in the last twenty years. The hiring policy changed. I think these days, courteous, conscientious and principled officers are weeded out at the application stage, in favour of confident, assertive order followers with specific I.Q. ranges. If we had police with principles, they wouldn't obey unlawful edicts from their bosses, like issuing FPN's or arresting street preachers, profiled stop and search , or threatening people with jail for politically incorrect speech. They say a few bad apples spoils the lot, and that's doubly true in the force. If those bad apples are never removed, and we all know that police do NOT grass on their own, then that leaves 'good' officers who are prepared to work with criminals every day. Until I see the scum dealt with, then to me, the rest of you are nothing more than their accomplices, turning a blind eye to the people work with you being villains. I'm sure many police feel like you do, but I've yet to see one upset enough to act. Bad police are hardly ever reported, and when they are, internal investigations invairiably find no wrongdoing. A few of you being above the law makes you ALL rightly hated and mistrusted, because you let them be there. What that officer did was tame, but had the driver disputed his false accusation he'd have been stopped and the police would have gone fishing on him, just to inconvenience him, intimidate him, and exert his power. He's have been I.D'd as a suspected criminal, his vehicle checked with a microscope, and had he continued to insist he was within the speed limit, that officer would have charged him with a crime we all saw didn't happen. No matter who he showed the footage to it would go all the way to court at our public expense, and when shown to be in the right, that officer would not be in court to defend his accusation and no action would be taken against them for abusing their position of authority to intimidate innocent members of the public. So, if police are upset about the lack of respect from the public, maybe, like in this clip, the public are 100% right about exactly how much respect is due. You all wear the same uniform, and you all close ranks around law breakers and psychopaths in your midst, even though you all see what goes on, and you all have the power to arrest these scars on your reputation, so you all deserve the same level of respect. Personally I want the minimum interaction with any of you, even in an emergency. I'd rather deal with it myself, and trust random members of the public than see any of YOUR gang get involved, and it will take one HELL of a police shakeup and a LOT of sackings and at least SOME prosecutions of bad police to change my mind.

@@Asdayasman Sadly my family has had dealings with the Police which shows the standards. If you do go to court, you can't ask for the footage (body or dash), and they'll provide it after proceedings. The footage they do use in court can be edited to their favour, and is fine as its not your evidence. (video it yourself). A complaint against the Police will only go further if the senior officer allows it to go further. Basically a veto. Sadly I'm under South Yorkshire polices 'care'. Their reputation is in the cats litter tray as far as I'm concerned. Hillsborough & Rotherham Taxis come to mind. Dealt with them a few times, otherwise OK, but on a community/city level, its non existence presence, Wild West style policing. I live in Darnall Sheffield, which has the HQ only a few miles away, but I hear far more ambulances than police

If they omit evidence of them doing wrong, that's not surprising, everyone should be expected to do that, as the burden of proof is on the accuser. I'm assuming by "edited" you mean "cut" of course - I don't imagine anyone is deepfaking police bodycam footage to CYA. I hear Rotherham has some good history with lawkeeping. You know, with those kids 'n' that. Personally I'd move.

happens all the time. Once over took a cop doing 30 in a 40 zone. He followed me all the way to my destination, did a full car search, background check, breathalizer, the full works on it because I told him "You were doing 10 under on a dual carriageway. Thats wreckless driving. YOU'RE at fault." For about the next month, i seemed to be pulled over every few days for a "Routine random check." If this ever happens to someone, demand their badge numbers and the reason for them stopping you. THen report them for harrassment by the fourth time.

In which case if two vehicles are travelling side by side at the same speed the one on the inside would move ahead of the one on the outside. For the one on the outside it would have to go faster than the one on the inside just to keep up and faster still to overtake. Not that it matters. The driver did hit 32 for a second or two so the copper is right even if he is a petty prick looking for a conflict.

8:25 This may be a mild incident, but it's a perfect example of the bullying, self righteous attitude displayed by a significant number of police we see these days. Crime is rife, Home office announces a clamp down and this is the result. No impact on the real issues people experience, but police trying to put the fear of god into people just going about their merry way so it appears as if they are strict and firm, when really they are just bullies. I know it's not all police. There are still many officers who are caring and honest. and I salute those people, but I fear they are dwindling. Too many of them these days will simply mindlessly follow orders, even if those orders overreach their powers and infringe rights, which is a VERY dangerous situation.

Maybe the cammer should consider making an official complaint about the Officer’s attitude. Reading other comments on the video, I can see a very negative undertone regarding the police. I agree I think the Officer was out of order with his comments and might have been trying to provoke a situation, which could have led to a booking. Fortunately, the dash cam is without bias and although the Police like dash cam footage of incidents, they need to remember these devices can record their actions as well.

Like the cyclist cycling down a two lane road but with parked cars along his side. A police van clearly close passed, and after he complained, stopped to try and intimidate him, claiming he was riding in the middle of the road and it wasn't a close pass.

Yes Ashley, the opening crash got my attention alright. It got my attention at the time as well. Other driver said it was my fault. I didn't tell him at the time that I had a dashcam, I just let him tell his mother it was another driver responsible for crashing into her car, and tell her insurance company the same. Until they saw the video and accepted 100% blame immediately

this is one of those cases where the dashcam sees more than the driver. Sees the car earlier and sees it unobstructed. It's nose was on the windshield, and mine wasn't. Well not until after the collision.

The reason for the bad view at the junction is the train line that passes underneath at an angle, and that structure to the right is part of the railway. But also there is a lampost on the other side of the junction. I hit that when my face was nestled in an airbag and it was wobbling over the trainline. Arrives the council in superfast time.

Think any adjudicator worth their salt would have found the other driver at fault from photos but was good to have the dash cam. Unfortunately there will always be people who will try to weasel out of fault, no matter the circumstances.

The traffic officer on the second last clip was rude. There was no need for that at all. If he was going to say something, he should have pulled him over, or just let it go. Rude words of advice and the pretentious attitude gives them a bad name, and yes they may have been dealing with something earlier that was stressful, but you don't take it out on the next person you deal with.

With the radius of that bend it would have been a miniscule difference. To get 1mph diff on 30 mph you would need 3.33% difference in turn radius. Estimating from how long it took him to get from the rear corner of the police car to the front corner he was going 2 to 3 mph faster. And he was getting 32 from the gps for a couple of seconds, although that is also not an accurate way of telling exact speed.

@@Kris_M If it's a 3 metre wide lane, then that means a 90 metre (180 diameter) curve will do the trick. That's a shallow curve by UK standards. It would equate to a roundabout with a circumference of over half a kilometre. So, no, it is not a miniscule difference, and I would judge that curve to be on a radius of significantly less than 90 metres.

@@Kris_M should be looking at distance not speed. circumference is measured by pi*d. Lanes are usually 2.5-4m wide. The tighter the curve the more exacerbated the difference will be. on a 100m diameter curve, a single lane of difference will equate to 6% or more difference in diameter. This curve looks close to 50-60m diameter, which means the difference is closer to 10-12%

I have only once been stopped by the police, about thirty years ago when I lived in Manchester. It was an unmarked car that raced up behind me, tailgated, and did all it could to goad me into speeding. I slowed down to let them pass (I thought it was some dickhead), then the blues went on. I stopped immediately, and one of the officers got out to berate me, claiming I had been speeding. I had not, and of course there was no arrest, no charge, because there was no evidence. He was just angry because I hadn't fallen into his trap. I'm generally pro-police but sometimes they really don't help themselves with the law-abiding public.

I had similar driving through Wigan once. I passed a police car that was stuck behind some slow traffic. He shot out and raced up behind me. He put his window down at the next lights and went on a rant about how I was speeding and I was I going to calm it down. He was completely hysterical. I wasn’t speeding, I know the road well and there’s a speed camera on it. I would be stupid to race past that. That idiot has shaped my opinion of the police and this was years ago now.

Also car speedometers are set to show you are going faster than you actually are. By law they must show between 100% and 110% of the actual speed so are typically set at 105% to give some degree of tolerance for tyre wear etc. On the other hand we don't know the accuracy of the GPS speed on the dashcam. There are many factors that can affect that.

Briefly cutting the signal will result in a jump in displayed speed when it's regained, it momentarily showing a value higher that the car is actually travelling at. My dashcam has briefly shown over 300 mph in the past as an extreme example of this. I have a 1.6 diesel Focus, so the garage employee driving it at the time didn't actually manage to go that fast.

The police clip is disappointing to me. The police don't have the best reputation nowadays, and incidents like this don't help to improve it. Doing 32 in a 30 limit is technically illegal, but giving drivers grief about such small infringements really just serves to annoy (and criminalise, if a ticket is issued) people who are essentially law abiding. That gives a bad impression and that bad impression can be long lasting because negative experiences tend to stick in the memory. In the long run, this sort of police behaviour makes their job harder, because the public becomes steadily less cooperative.

Regarding the police clip, it's not as if the cammer was driving like they were at Silverstone. Public opinion and trust are really necessary for the police to do their jobs. Incidents like that only add fuel to the public distrust bonfire. It takes 100 incidents of good policing to overcome 1 incident of bad stuff like this.

@@cargy930 the part where the speed readout ashley circled read 32 MPH. are you still assuming the drivers claim that his indicated speed was below 30 MPH is not belied by showing an indicated speed above 30 MPH? and again, the fact that he caught up with the police officer BEFORE he went for the racing line while the officer was maintaining 30 MPH by his CALIBRATED speedomoeter and the GPS showed a lower speed indicates either the cammer's speedomoeter was reading low, or it did indicate a speed over 30 MPH. bottom line is: arguing with a cop who gives a verbal warning in passing is almost as stupid as deciding to overtake a cop.

The cop was out on an ego trip but the cammer made himself an easy target by actually speeding over 30 for a bit there. When ever a cop is around, I always make sure to drive extra slow so that way they don't give you a ticket for doing 1 over the limit for a split second. Don't give them any excuses to pull you over. If they're in front of you, keep your distance and make sure you're slow enough so they pull away. If others want to blast past you, let them and let them become someone else's problem. Personal blind spots are a big issue when people get behind the wheel. You'll do well to not get in their way. They'll only blame you for their mistakes.

In the police clip, if the dashcam is showing around 28-30mph then the speedometer is probably showing 31-33 (although it seems to vary slightly by manufacturer), which is probably not worth giving someone a warning over. 16 seems a bit too fast but I think a sign showing there's a junction just after the hill would be helpful. That's a dangerous place to emerge from since it's behind the hill and just after the change in speed limit. 17 seems fine in terms of speed, the driver successfully avoided that terrible overtake.

As I understand it, the offence is simply to be travelling above a certain speed, rather than to believe or know you are doing so. Unlike many things in law, your "intent" is not taken into account.

Police officer clearly has some ego issues! Granted, the overtaker was going over the speed limit and wasn't the smartest to go over the limit next to a police car, but it was by 2-3mph at most. @@123MondayTuesday At one point it was actually calibrated. Nowadays though I doubt it. Various police documentaries show them flying down a motorway at 160 mph (indicated) in factory cars limited to 155 mph by German legislation (so accurately 155 mph). It becomes apparent that this factory limiter isn't removed from police cars when they try to chase down a fleeing BMW or similar. Once they hit their 155 mph limiter, and the police following the same, the police don't gain even slightly on them, but their speedometer still shows 160 mph, just like the civilian cars will. When this officer first joined, they probably were calibrated, just like how the police probably had more powerful engines in the 'cooking model's' body. The last of those was the last Vectra. The police had some estates with the VXR engine, but without the VXR bodywork. The likes of which have not been around for over a decade now.

Just in case you didn't realise, at 2:45 when you point out that sometimes there is a warning sign for low aircraft, there is actually one on the right hand side of the road below the "Lower Uphum" sign. It does seem quite small and is on the "wrong" side of the road though. Also, to add, there are some places (One of the roads near RAF Brize Norton comes to mind) where the sign is coupled with the flashing lights you get at level crossings, for larger aircraft. I happened to have to wait for one (a Globemaster iirc) to land once!

I've heard the following suggestion for motorbike filtering (lane splitting) in the UK. But the way I commuted on a dual carriageway, was just to rejoin the queue if it reached 20 mph. Hand covering the brake lever too. If a gap appeared, I expected someone to move across suddenly. "The 20:20 rule - filtering safely There is a school of thought that says filtering is safe as long as the traffic you are overtaking is travelling at no more than 20mph and you are overtaking them at no more than an additional 20mph. I lived in Australia many years ago and every year without fail was attacked by breeding and nesting magpies whilst walking down the shops. They attack anything and everything. You either had to walk down with an umbrella, a long stick which was held up so it was taller than you or a hat with a set of eyes sewn into the back of it because they would usually attack from rear and if they saw the eyes they would hopefully be scared off. Oh and definately keep an eye out for drop bears 🐻 Speaking of dogs though, we did have one in our suburb that loved chasing cars and attempting to bite your tyres as you were moving! 🤣😂🤣

Police vehicle speedometers are actually calibrated. It is probably all software tweaks now with digital cockpits, but for the dials components in the cluster were swapped and tuned/measured to be within a much tighter tolerance.

They're saying I was doing 30 when I overtook you, not more. But they actually say I was doing 27 because my speedo showed 30? So to overtake the cop car by inference the cop car was doing around 24 when they overtook? The officer claimed to be doing 30 and they've said, basically, no it was 24? They didn't say my speedo showed 33 but is actually 30, why not?

I first took driving lessons in 1997. For a variety of reasons, I didn't pass a test until 2010. I only heard the term 'merge in turn' last year watching Ashley's videos. None of the instructors I drove with used the term, my copy of the Highway Code doesn't include use of the term. To drivers of my age then, it's just pushing in. I don't think it's not being able to grasp a concept, it's that no-one told us about the concept to start with.

The road sign says Lower Upham and a quick search reveals there's a tiny little airfield on the right hand side of the road, as you approach the town on the B2177. On Google Maps, you can see that the runway is really close to the road! Definitely a good place to put up the aircraft warning sign Ashley shows.

The conversation seemed to suggest 30 mph was the limit. The brief display of 32 mph needs to be taken with a pinch of salt though as they were passing under a bridge at the time. GPS speed displays like those used by dashcams can indicate a momentarily higher speed than is actually being driven at if the signal is interrupted by anything, like a large structure of concrete and steel. They could have been at a consistent 28 mph through there but the GPS signal dropping out caused it to calculate the speed from 2 coordinates further apart than they actually were for the same time elapsed.

That arrogant officer reminded me of a time I was pulled over by police in Ilfracombe after I overtook a car on a duel carriageway in a 60 zone. One of the police said "It stands to reason you must have been speeding back in the 30 zone to have caught then(the other driver) up. So in their head, that is the only possibility. What actually happened was I was driving out of the town and the other driver pulled out of a side road ahead of me, went up to (and possibly over) 30, then slowed to 20 because they lit up one of those 30mph warning signs. Meanwhile, me in my car, happily cruising with my cruise control on at 29, like I always do (probably too much really) caught the other driver up. Then when they failed to accelerate once we reached the 60 zone, I used the outside lane of the dual carriageway to overtake them. Given that the police said they suspected me for drink driving, I think they had already determined they were going to suspect someone of it that evening, and they chose me, even though once I had pulled over they could see all my fishing tackle in my car, as I had just been sea fishing. One thing the officer didn't consider when he made the assumption, is that the road was not a straight one and they were obviously not around to see us in the 30 zone. There are no roads to turn off to for several hundred yards, after that 30mph LED warning sign, which means, if I was going over 30mph when they weren't around to see me, they must have been doing over 30mph themselves to have caught us up, when we wouldn't have been in view to them due to the bends.

I find in general a portion of the British public drive and even live their lives with a "me first" selfish self-entitled attitude. I have come to the realisation that I too was falling into this habit of becoming combative to retain my place and space and found it was actually affecting my mental state with heightened anxiety and stress overall. Whilst battling the stresses of daily life with everything in the news, work and environment, an easy outlet can be found on the the roads where someone else is at fault when invading on 'your right'. I have changed my attitude and now drive with much more clarity, patience and focus. I give myself adequate room for error and if someone else wants to barge ahead so be it. I would rather have them in front than behind. I feel calm driving now than in the past and feel proud and satisfied after journeys in the car. It has also made me appreciate the privilege of driving again. People, please rid yourselves of your inconsiderate attitudes and be considerate of others, no matter who they are. We all have different abilities and everyone can make mistakes. The lack of proper planning and maintenance of the roads is enough to contend with without the addition of your entitlement. With regards to the police clip #21), the cammer was on the very limit of 30mph and unclear if the jump to 32mph was due to incorrect GPS lock on the camera or a genuine 32mph. I suspect the downhill gradient temporarily increased the speed slightly. Either way, could easily be used against the cammer…in my opinion One thing I saw often on the motorway in the past was a police vehicle doing 60mph in lane one and a massive queue of cars doing 60-62mph in lane 2 scared of overtaking. Don’t see it so much these days

The inside lane of a bend will overtake a vehicle on the outside lane of the curve if they're travelling at the same speed. This is school sports level of understanding which the copper should know about. That's why the overtake only happened on the right hand bends and the relative speed dropped off on the left hand bends. No-one's saying the copper was lying, that was an inappropriate response, but I do believe he was mistaken. That notwithstanding, I've met enough bolshy coppers not to bother overtaking them unless they're obviously driving well below the limit. It's always their word against yourn.

Im not 100% sure, but i recall that speedometers in cars are required to be calibrated such that they can never show a speed slower than what the car is actually doing (as speedometers are never 100% accurate)

I wonder how evidentially sound a dash cam's coordinates, let alone speed calculation, are in court, especially around flyovers interfering with line of sight and changes in elevation affecting overall positioning. In the open they're pretty good, but on the flat with cruise control on I still often see mine flicker +/- 1-2mph of my speed.

Also don't forget the speed camera vans on the bridges. Comfortably drive along with cruise control at 70, spot the van on the bridge umpteen miles away (in most cases they are veeery easily visible) and prepare to brake. Lo and behold, a few hundred yards or less before the bridge with the van a sea of red brake lights of cars braking down to 65 or even less after flying past you (and most likely already having been caught by the speed camera) well in excess of 70 just a few seconds earlier.

20 years ago the gamekeepers wife on the estate got off the bus and ran across the front of the bus and into the road without looking. A guy overtook the bus without slowing down and threw her up the road. Result? She was three months in a hospital bed and eighteen months of physio to learn to walk again. Now I always overtake large stationary vehicles with utmost caution, keeping as far from their side as I can, trying to see underneath for feet or shadows, and am ready to put the anchors on if someone walks out without looking. More and more I think we need to ask ourselves 'what if?' and drive accordingly. And we could actually see those guys setting off just before the cammer passed the back of the lorry. Nice save though, but a bit of forethought might have saved his pants from being soiled......

The microlight aircraft was landing at Solent Flight's grass air strip near Southampton. It is very narrow but also quite short so the pilot would want to land as close to the beginning of the strip as possible. I estimate he crossed the road at about 20 feet, which seems entirely reasonable. It's unlikely the local authority would put up 'low flying' warning plates on the road for such a strip.

By calibrated they mean taken out of the vehicle and tested (though digital speedos are more common now and methods have been introduced to calibrate them). However, from the information I could find, for most police vehicles, they use a rolling road every 6 to 12 months. So that police officers speedo may not have been reading true. Conversely, GPS speed have their margin of error too. As I understand it, on straight runs they can be remarkably accurate. But when in situations where there are many twists and turns, they can be slightly less accurate.

6:15 I live near that road and it’s a nightmare, it actually joins onto a roundabout literally 30 seconds on from where this clip ends but there is also a second turn in just a little bit further where people will get stuck waiting to emerge for more than 5 minutes at a time because the road is so busy.. sometimes they just pull out into the main road and hope someone lets them cut in,,, that speed was incredibly dangerous for that road, no idea why anyone would want to be doing that

Hey Ashley! (He says, hoping our host reads the comments occasionally...) What's with the strange fade out that darkens the video for quite a few seconds between clips? On my phone screen it makes the start of the next clip difficult to see in detail. Can you shorten it to a brief swipe or do a quick blend? As the cammer passes the police car they enter a righthand bend thus the cammer is covering a shorter distance and could quite possibly be going slower than the police car yet still passing.

Many are commenting this, but he was going 2 to 3 mph faster which cannot be accounted for by a turn with that turn radius.

@@Kris_M While the GPS briefly (approximately 1 second) showed 32mph, if you think the GPS is accurate on a road with that many twists and turns, you're mistaken.

@@cargy930 I've put that in another comment. He passes 4 meters of the police car in 3 seconds. That's 3 mph observed difference, of which 1 mph is gonna be from the smaller turn radius for the inner lane.

1:13 Slow down on first sight of the indicator. Slow down and move further right when conflict started. Not difficult really. As I get further in, the big thing they could have done differently is look. "Didn't have indicator on or nothing", clearly failure to observe. 4:26. Not amazing, more terrifying So the cop. The viewer broke the speed limit. 32mph is the lowest max speed they likely had on that section of road (GPS calculates behind, not ahead- its why your speedo can be reading 60 while they are still climbing the 50s, or be stationary and it still says 12mph). Warning someone they were speeding is in no way an abuse of power. A simple "Oh, sorry mate" would have ended it there and then. There was a liar, and it was the viewer. Be it intentional or not, if their speedo genuinely read 30 when doing 32, their vehicle is not legally fit for the road. The underread tolerance for a speedo is zero. More likely their speedo was reading nearer 35 if they normally get a 30 reading at 27. An experienced cop can estimate road speeds to within an mph or two, even without calibrated measuring equipment, it is why technically only the opinion based on observation is sufficient in court for a speeding conviction. A basic part of advanced driver training is to pick a speed and maintain it accurately where appropriate without relying on cruise control, speed limiters etc. Add in the regular use of a laser speed detection device, and they get very very good at estimating speeds. I did it with the local community speedwatch group on a 30 mph road, I was within 1 mph of the laser every single time between 24 and 38mph. Given training, calibrated equipment in the police vehicle, arguing that "gps is inaccurate on bends" is a bit silly, especially with modern multi-channel receivers and fast processors. That argument may have held 20 years ago, but not today

7:40 most gps devices are generally around 1 mph slower than the actual speed of the vehicle but this can be more depending on clear sight of the satellites, tree cover, buildings etc etc. Assuming the driver is making refference that the dash cam says he is doing 30 and the actual speed is 27 "generally" I feel these two numbers are the wrong way around. Based on observations of my own dashcam and satnav which are 1mph and 3mph respectivly slower at 30mph (they show as being 29mph and 27mph) and pretty much report the same speed as the car on motorways at 70mph (nothing blocking line of sight) cammer was probably over the limit and granted not by much at all but those speed cameras in police cars are pretty accurate compared to a gps device like a dashcam. There is a whole other discussion to be had about how accurate a cars speedo is too but that is for another time :D

1:00 "What could the driver have done differently?" Stayed out of the blind spot. Had running lights on. Braked. Swerved. Let go of the horn. Calmed down. Not fed off the anger of their passenger. (See previous point). Pretty poor showing all round. A good driver turns a near-incident into a non-incident.
