Final clip: we don’t know why, but it does raise the important point that middle lane hogging is often incorrectly diagnosed by impatient people who haven’t read the Highway Code rules 264 & 267: That we should return to the left “when it is safe to do so” and “ensure you do not cut in on the vehicle you have overtaken”. There shouldn’t be a moment where you cause the vehicle you have passed to brake to recreate safe space. And for me that means leaving a 2s gap.

Unfortunately it seems to be happening more frequently -I saw one the other day in the fourth lane. I think a lot of this is to do with "just in time" deliveries where drivers are given a delivery slot at their destination, and the company is penalised if they arrive late. I have heard of one case where a car factory was faced with stopping production because a delivery was delayed and the haulage company was threatened with a six-figure penalty. If you get some noddy pootling along at 50 mph in the middle lane it must be tempting to chance an overtake if you are running late.

I agree. The cammer's dashcam seemed quite high, so I'm going to guess it was a wagon or larger vehicle and the van driver was leaving a decent gap before pulling in. It was by no means excessive. Copper not only drove badly initially, but by remonstrating with the van driver instead of getting on with his day, it had a marked effect on the vans driver's lane-keeping. Poor all round from plod there.
@nigels.6051Ай бұрын
@@fablolliesrock You can send clips like this in to police complaints, and they do get taken seriously and acted on. You could also simply upload it via the police dashcam submission form for the local police force, as you would any other incident recorded on dashcam, might not be taken quite so seriously since it would likely be investigated by the same police force as the driver is from so I would send it to police complaints. The police driving is clearly unacceptable, and the Van actually pulled in too early, there was no more than 1 second between him and our vehicle, and the next pull in was even sooner. You are supposed to leave 2 seconds. I've seen advanced emergency drivers use the middle lane if the motorway is clear because that gives them the most buffer space on either side, but they use lane 3 if a car is in lane 1, so they can pass nice and wide. So I forgive the ambulance there. It can be a struggle though I think when slower emergency vehicles are using blues on the motorway but aren't fast enough to overtake. I have seen Fire engines on blues having to travel in lane 2 because they're not exactly going to push 70 very easily
@douglasreid699Ай бұрын
"if you are in in the correct lane, you won't be undertaken..." doenst apply when an emergencey vehicle has its blue lights on and on the motorway. they use lane 2/3/4 to stop other vehicles overtaking on the right as overtaking on the left is a should not (also classed as careless driving by the police when at high speed like flowing motorway speeds), that way they can control the traffic and have a clear road ahead to make progress. problem is so many drivers dont understand not to overtake (on the left or right) an emergency vehicle when its got the blue lights on. i got told this by 2 seperate advanced driving instructors (one was my dad who taught me to drive a car, trained emergency vehicle drivers in the 80s, talked multiple times over the years when both in a vehicle and saw something similar happening ahead of us) and one was my motorbike instructor in 2005.

@tomsixsixАй бұрын
Blue signs show A1M - it's identical (in law) to a motorway.
@smilerbobАй бұрын
Thank you, I couldn’t see the sign in my phone as it was blurred up and I know some sections of the A1 still have blue signs despite not being A1(M) Thank you for clarifying that one and I stand corrected on the location 👍
@smilerbobАй бұрын
@tomsixsix Others have commented the road is the A14 so no restrictions are in place and the HGV, as I initially thought although the wrong road, was OK

5:30 Couple weeks ago, someone was leaving a gap for anyone coming out of the petrol station while waiting at the lights, the guy behind started beeping their horn for him to move up. Eventually, the guy overtook into the space that was left. Lights were still red.

At 8:35 white Audi enters the mini-roundabout just before or, at worst, at the same time as the second car. That's not 'pushing in front', I think and good driving in congested traffic. Second car driver then commits the offence of driving over the white centre marking, apparently, in an attempt to make it look like he's been impeded and the Audi driver failed to give priority to him.
@Batters56Ай бұрын
Plus looks like not many cars from the right of cammer go across the roundabout, so very hard to emerge legally from where the Audi does. I don’t have a problem cars pushing out a bit in that situation.

Regarding the passenger getting out of the vehicle in a queue at time 9:20 - I had that happen in front of me once, in the queue at a set of traffic lights. The difference in my case was that the passenger, a lad in school uniform, got out of the right rear door of the car, not on the left side. I left a print from the front tyre of my motorbike on the inside of the door. (And had to change my underwear when I got home!)

Lorry fire…. I want to add….. A few of us at our very typical workplace are fire marshal trained…. We have had training using the fire extinguishers you typically see in a workplace While there are different types, water, foam, etc, but what shocked us was how little comes out of these things. And the ones in the car are even smaller. So if you see a massive explosion & fire like in this video….don’t attempt to tackle it with your car fire extinguisher-it would be completely hopeless. Likewise if your electric or hybrid car has an electrical fire….and even if you have the correct mini fire extinguisher with you-the advice given to us was……abandon it and get away, call 999. Those fires are especially dangerous & difficult to put out.

There's a yellow box I go across frequently that has people stop in it more often than not. It is at the entrance for a fire station which has a police station right next door. Not once have I witnessed the police do anything about it.

there is a rule of thumb regarding vehicle fires and other such incidents: hold your fist out with your thumb pointing up. if you can still see part of the incident around your thumb, you're too close.

Moved from the UK to Malaysia. I've taken all the lessons from my instructor, KZbinrs like yourself and driving in the UK and being aware and predicting what could happen. Never had an accident and hopefully never will, but oh my goodness, the poor driving in the UK compared to what happens over here on a daily basis... can't compare. In one day, I've had a cop speed without blues and go straight in a right hand turning lane, then I had a car go in the wrong direction, I had a car drive in the emergency lane, I had a car overtake me, slow down - but not even to brake check, to being on their phone for 5 minutes and being overtaken by me safely again. Come to Malaysia Ash and drive!

Thats the A14 aint it at 8:13 where the HGV is in lane 3 LEGALLY as its a A road.
@stevecampbell7589Ай бұрын
after taking another look at that clip, i can confirm it is the A14 between A1(M) and M11 but is STILL an all purpose road
@stevecampbell7589Ай бұрын
I can also 100% confirm this is A14 westbound 2 miles prior to the A1 slip road where another half a mile up the road lane 1 becomes dedicated lane for the A1(M) north and lane 2 is then lane 1 for the A14 but can also be used to get onto A1(M) north too. So, even though it is legal for HGV's to be allowed in every lane on the A14, that HGV be going into lane 2 of the A14 bound towards the M1 and Northamptonshire and beyond. I drive along this road alot between Felixtowe/Harwich docks to Liverpool, Birkenhead, Holyhead or Hersham docks
@smilerbobАй бұрын
Thank you for confirming, I couldn’t read the sign properly as it was blurred on my phone. I thought it wasn’t motorway restrictions despite the blue signs and also thought it was included, in conjunction with the following clip, to generate discussion around when it is OK for HGVs to be in the outside lane

The variable speed limits at 01:42. Every year when i drive round to the UK i encounter these things. I would call them stupid, but they aren't - they're actually smart. They're just run stupidly. I'm only in the country 2 weeks a year and i've lost count of the number of times i've driven an almost empty section of motorway at 40 or 50mph for no identifiable reason. I don't think the operators realise that this sort of nonsense leads to a reduction in trust, and ultimately obedience of the rules of the road

Unfortunately in Australia, that situation at 7:26 happens all of the time. I don’t know why, but our keep left unless overtaking rule only applies to the right lane 🤔 which really should change to be all lanes.
@avalon7902Ай бұрын
The Smart motorways are not smart. In the example shown, you can change lane to go the speed you wish, be it 50, 70, 40 and 50. I've seen these issues quite a few times. Its a Government operation so therefore it will be expensive and incompetently done.

Although carrying a fire extinguisher is a good idea, be aware that those little hand-helds aren't going to stop a significant fire like a fuel tank fire. Maybe a small oil fire under the bonnet, or similar. A large scale fire though, not a chance. You might be able to knock a fire back enough for someone to get out of a car, but you're not going to save a car that's fully on fire, and all you'll do is risk getting into a fuel tank explosion. Keep it for when someone's life is under immediate threat. It's even more important to understand the limitations now that so many cars are hybrids or fully electric.

9:30 I did something similar recently, but mostly because I was dying for a wee and was looking for services 😂 Was in lane 2, passed a lorry, and then saw the sign for services. It made me think that services should appear better on google maps... I didn't see any signage 0.5 mile leading up to it. Got honked but my bladder was very thankful, also to be fair it wasn't thaaat close...

@8:00, obvious worng is the HGV in lane 3 when they are not allowed to be there, other wrong is the cam car overtaking on the left in flowing traffic and not slow moving traffic. in the last clip, i think the van was speeding, possibly just let off the throttle after noticing the police car behind to slow down and caught the police car out who was catching them to give the driver a warning to watch their speed rather then pull them over. i have seen a police biker catch a biker and just advise them to keep their speed below the posted limit before rather than pull them over.

6:00 With how late the clip starts, I'm wondering if the load shifted when braking for a red light/traffic in front that hadn't moved off yet for the lights turning green, and if it did that, the last thing you'd want is a truck setting off again with a load that could slip off the back when they do. There's plenty of clips from all around the world out there where stuff has fallen off trucks as they've accelerated away from traffic lights.

Ashley's mug 😂 That lorry fire though.. Glad the driver was okay, but what caused _that_?
@edwardpurkis1084Ай бұрын
A lot of tescos hgv fleet and a large number of other hgs run on LNG liquefied natural gas. Rather than diesel, or in a car petrol. Its normally very safe but as the truck left the carriageway and hit the start of the steel barrier between the slip road and lane 1, it will have ripped right into the fuel tanks, normally on the left hand side right behind the first axle, igniting them instantly. A perfect storm of things to cause a bad fire. The vast majority of LNG trucks go around with no problems at all. LNG is more prone to an rapid fire as its stored under pressure compared to Diesel which is at atmospheric pressure and actually quite hard to ignite.

2:36 I got caught in the queue this caused. After queuing for a few mins, I knew we’d be there a while, and when I heard sirens, I looked out. The first fire appliance came through splitting lanes 3&4, & I kept right after they passed, everyone else moved back over. DONT do this if you’re queuing, as Ashley says re police vehicles, there’s likely more on the way…. A few minutes later the next one came, aggressively splitting lanes 1&2. (Defo not how they were taught I suspect, and again people moved back after they passed. Now no one had any room to move so the ambulance that came next had one medic walking through directing people out of the way & took 45 mins to move about 300m. When we were finally allowed to pass, (exiting J6 to re-enter), the Tesco Lorry was just a shell, the 2 appliances our side complimented by 4 on the anticlockwise side.

What annoys me is when I'm set at some lights and there's a yellow box in front of me. It's not clear despite my lights going green and someone behind me beeps because I'm not moving. Just because the lights are green, it doesn't mean to say people can move.
