My late father opened his driving school in the late 1950s. I have spent almost 50 years as a professional driver of small and very large vehicles, I still am learning to drive. I have changed some of my driving habits after watching some of your videos. The thing is my experience of driving, has taught me be patient and if you think no-one would do something that stupid, you'll be proven wrong. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

The driving instructor with the open door whilst the learner was driving what was the instructor thinking. I remember from my lessons when I used to park next to a curb my instructor used to just open the door to let me see how close I was and the shut the door again and this was only after the car was completely at a stop and often engine off.

Looked to me that the cyclist wasn't so much overtaking as positioning on the right in order to safely make the right turn onto the cycle path whilst the oncoming traffic was stationary- thereby not holding anyone up and reducing risk. I'd be interested to know what your "unselfish" alternative approach would be?
@leforite

Agreed. Calling him selfish is absurd. The selfish thing to do would have been to wait behind the queue of cars and hold everyone up as he tries to get started on a hill. He kept momentum and kept up with the flow of traffic before his right turn. Not selfish at all

In Reading we would often see Instructor College trainers, for a left reverse, teaching their instructors to stand on the street corner and instruct through an open window. That is proper naughty driving with the door open. Like I get it if your in lets say a parking bay and you don't want your nose hanging out (long car) so [WITH NOBODY BEHIND YOU ALSO AGAINST A SOLID WALL SO NO POSSIBILITY OF HITTING ANYBODY FULLSTOP] you open your door a bit and go back slowly if your haven't got a reverse camera. Fine that's safe. (also that's exactly how you reverse a 80/90's Lamborghini in that manner fun fact!). But c'mon man I passed two years ago and all it takes is to properly setup your seat and mirrors how you like them and it's a piece of piss not to curb your wheels. I was out driving my van for *company* the other day when I was on a 60 road behind three cyclists. Naturally I slow and wait for an opportunity to pass safely. There's no way to do this however as traffic is coming thick and fast from the other direction and I can't get up to speed as quickly in a van as other vehicles can. Anyway, I don't believe that drivers behind me knew what I was slowing down for as a white car (believe it was an Audi) overtook me but I don't think they realised the cyclists were there and got a bit of a telling of from a horse box coming the other way. Pillock. The cyclists indicate right to turn off but as they're moving right another car begins to overtake me. I see this and in my slight panic I activate hazards as if to say, "DO NOT OVERTAKE". And thankfully they didn't but as a recent van driver it really surprised me the amount of people who seemingly can't see round me i.e. drive up right behind you and not consider why you're doing about 20-25 in a 60.
@ynotnilknarf39
@ynotnilknarf39 3 жыл бұрын
Yup, this is why as cyclists we are taught to ride in primary position in some instances to dissuade people overtaking when there simply isn't enough of a safe space and this applies particularly on NSL when the speed differential can be significant. Unfortunately some people are just impatient arseholes and unable to drive safely or with any patience, they'd rather kill or maim than wait a few seconds. And yes, there are some right dicks riding two wheels but the huge difference is they're hugely more likely to only harm themselves not others. Well done too you on doing the right thing, myself when I'm driving behind cyclists I take a right of centre position in the lane, this dissuades overtakes from behind me and possibly lets others behind see the cyclists on the nearside. Hang back in urban areas at lower speeds maybe 2 good car lengths, on faster roads a bit more and on NSL 15metres. This means you open up the view for yourself, can accelerate into the gap to make for an easier, quicker and safer overtake. Your steering wheel is also not being turned as much with the initial position to the right which means more control, also, even when in urban environments, try to use the opposite lane fully, more so with a larger vehicle, on 40 and above this should be minimum standard and not straddling lanes.

Looks like the cyclist knew the road. Let me put forward a hypothesis. He realises that unless he keeps going rather than stopping behind the red car that his loss of momentum coupled with the steep hill will mean he slows considerably with a low chance of picking up speed again, thereby slowing the traffic behind him even more. He also knows that there will be no oncoming traffic so being far over on the right is safe (although ironically given the last video from here he may be in danger from red light jumping cyclists coming the other way(!)). He also knows that he will be turning right off of the road almost immediately and would rather position himself over to the right than be slowly going on the left and needing to move across. So he makes the decision to take control of the situation and successfully negotiates a potentially awkward situation with the only 'casualty' being the two cars immediately behind who have to slow slightly. Of course we may never know his thought processes so my description here is hypothetical, but I feel it fits. If he hadn't turned then sure, questionable move. I really appreciate you slowing the learner behind the cyclist and being crystal clear that the only option in that situation was to wait, and that there is zero issue with waiting. Good work, need more of that reinforcement. But then all that good work is undone by your rant against cyclists. Sure, have a rant about that one guy if you want, but I contrast that with your reaction when the blue car drove through a red full in the face of possibly turning traffic. Your reaction - 'Wasn't a good decision by that one was it?' You quite rightly describe it as lethal but then refrain from going on about stupid and selfish drivers who you have to do the thinking for. Come on Ashley, please.
@ashley_neal
@ashley_neal 4 жыл бұрын
I stopped reading when I saw "loss of momentum" in the first line. When will some cyclists learn? Edit: I did read your comment and it is a good one, apart from I'm unsure why are you aren't saying the same about my categorisation of private hire drivers. Does that mean every single one of them drives like an idiot? There is however a big difference in most of my comment threads On how drivers don't stick up for other drivers when they do idiotic things, but cyclists always go on the defensive and try and give reasons why it's acceptable. When cyclist start calling out poor cycling is the day that things will start to improve. . I have no filter when it comes to criticism of poor road use, it's just interesting why so many cyclists seem to disagree. Your comment overall however, was nice and balanced and your opinions are always welcomed. Keep safe, Ashley.

@@ashley_neal Thank you. I was going to say that taxi drivers also get your general ire as well actually but I was in danger of writing an essay. I also despair when I see them, supposedly professional and experienced drivers, doing bad things. This is actually about the use of language. The example I use is peoples reactions to red light jumpers. If a car goes through a red the reaction from most people is what an idiot (singular). Whereas when a cyclist goes through a red the reaction is very often bloody cyclists (plural). It is grating I can tell you. :) That is when cyclists step in generally, though there are plenty of other reasons just as there are plenty of different points of view amongst cyclists. I did comment on your video about the red light jumping cyclist and how it is just plain wrong. I also have some videos on my channel with numpty cyclists. I can tell you that most cyclists when they see a rider go through a red feel the exact same feelings as drivers, we really do. Keep up the good work!
@computerpro5341
@computerpro5341 4 жыл бұрын
@@ashley_neal It isn't a case of it being acceptable, but more it isn't as bad as when motorists do it, which I'm sure you'd know yourself. There is no excuse for running red lights whether you're on a bike or in a car, but which one would cause more damage? When cyclists run red lights it is utterly unacceptable but it isn't as bad as drivers make it out to be. The overtake here I wouldn't have done, but as Jason has mentioned good points about it. Note also the cars were never held up, the cyclist caused them no delay since they got to sit at the red light longer. I do enjoy your videos and find them entertaining but it would be nice if you think about the way you talk about cyclists. Here it sounds like you're calling all cyclists selfish, but really, like you have said it's 5% bad out of 95% good, but it would be nice if you accept it could've been said differently. If the cyclist was going to continue straight on, I doubt he'd have done the overtake. I think it was done because he knew he was turning right. Again, it's not acceptable but it isn't as bad as if he continued straight on.

It would be interesting if the learner where the instructor was holding the door open whilst the vehicle was in motion were to see this and comment.

8:25 as a cyclist that guy was a bit of a prat, if the traffic ahead was to stay stationary then filtering up the outside safely would have been fine (IMO) however with traffic ahead beginning to move off it makes way more sense to dab the brakes and join the queue, especially with the vehicle behind (your pupil) already showing that they're patient. It's also so refreshing to hear someone explain perfectly how to drive around cyclists and your pupil completely agreeing. (P.s. I said keep pedaling at pretty much the same time as you)
@fablolliesrock
@fablolliesrock 4 жыл бұрын
If you look closely you'll see that the cyclist actually turns off right down a cycle path at the top. He needed to be positioned to turn right and filtering up the outside allowed him to make the turn without impeding other road users in either direction. And from his viewpoint the cars were stationary when he pulled out. In this scenario, overtaking just to pull in again would indeed be selfish but that's not what he did. Of course he could have just stopped in the queue in primary but that would mean holding up the traffic behind for longer as he restarts on a hill. Either way I think an arm signal of his intentions would have helped.

Yes the standard of driving is that bad in Liverpool, best described as law less , Ashley can we have a parking on zig zag Christmas special ? Was the blue car stopped on zig zags on the other side of the red light that the taxi ran through at 2.15 ?

I actually can’t believe the amount of drivers that overtake, run red lights, and especially that clio driver! That was driving without due care and I would of been very tempted to forward that bit to the police if only for them to go on a improvement course.. what a stupid and pointless manoeuvre against a learner. On a brighter note, I really enjoy your videos! Best wishes!

No real surprises with the taxis but I am probably guilty of stereotyping - admittedly there are some absolute dunces in that "profession" 🤔. Emergency Stop: You mentioned the ABS here. I'm pretty sure that it does make a difference in wet conditions - less likely to lock up under braking. That is something that a driver must take into account as many vehicles, even now, don't have that feature. A separate video might be an idea on this particular subject 🤔. I certainly cannot recommend what the other Instructor was doing with the open door....... it never featured in my driving lessons 😆. Holding back from the overtake with the cyclist was definitely right. Not exactly convinced that his/her OT on the bridge was actually warranted. I realise that cyclists try to keep their momentum on an incline but really think that this wasn't the place to do an offside pass. The bridge appears to be familiar...... featured in a recent upload (stall/uphill start)? Despite watching the clips from the comfort of the setee, my instinctive reaction (blue Renault) was to hit the brakes...... and my car is outside lol. That looked way too close there and, imo, was totally inexcusable. You ask (description) "Have driving standards dropped"? It would appear to be the case. Almost every single clip warrants a complaint to the 👮‍♂️. I would have little hesitation to act on the evidence viewed here today. Good clips to showcase and great analysis. Stay safe everyone 👍.

The cyclist who moved to the centre of the road at the bridge turned right onto a cycle path immediately after the bridge, so his positioning was correct. The traffic was stationary when he began the overtake even though the lights had just turned green. I guess he knew the road. Good riding, I reckon, and better than stopping behind the red car and then having to start and get up to speed going up a steep hill, which would have slowed down traffic behind (a driving school car)!

Morning Ashley - thanks for sharing these, bit worrying that this is only part 1 - was August a particularly good/bad month?! I'm just back from a couple of days on the winding B roads of Norfolk, being terrorized by wealthy retired people in their massive MPVs. Tailgating, excess speed, overtaking cyclists on blind bends, you'd have had a field day. I don't think driving standards have particularly got worse but they haven't got any better. To me your black Zafira at the traffic lights is the worst of all, even beats the blue Renault. Completely unrelated, there seem to be a lot of dead trees in Liverpool this summer (see the 18mph cyclist clip). Any idea what's going on? Stay safe Ashley.

It can be awkward as a cyclist because it’s dangerous to go down the inside of cars but then if you choose to go round the outside they could set off at any second and trap you there while they pass you on the inside.

When I was instructing with BSM, I was also a Mock-test Examiner. once when I was about to start a mock test I noticed white tippex markings on the front and rear wipers, I removed them. The pupil failed for driving to far from kerb, hitting the kerb when stopping and to far from the kerb when reversing. The pupils instructor told me the reason the pupil had failed was because I had removed the white markings, which were put on by him to assist his pupils. I’ll leave it up to those who want to comment as to what I may have said to the instructor.

I had an instructor once who had the rear left passenger head rest raised up to the max when no one was in the car. He did this so the pupils could see through it and see where the road/kerb was when reversing round the corner. It made no sense to me at the time because I thought that if there was someone sitting there, I wouldn't be able to look there anyway. The car was a nissan micra.

Road users are often not aware of their surroundings, don't plan ahead, don't see dangers, live in their own bubble. This is - and always has been - the main cause of nearly all accidents. Dangerous behaviour on the road ends when automonous vehicles take over and driving as we know it disappears. Your vehicle will be a kind of prudent taxi. No accidents, but no driving fun either. Licences can be thrown in the litter bin. But don't panic, Ashley😳! If you are lucky, you will be offered the chance of retraining....😩

I attempted to report a car that entered a 20mph zone at approximately 50mph and then went through 2 red lights in a row. The Police got in touch and literally asked me what I wanted done about it? Would I just like them to go and have a word with the driver? 😂😂😂 Yeah, because we're talking about somebody dropping a crisp packet in the street. Suffice to say, I now turn a blind eye to dangerous driving and if I'm ever asked to be a witness, I'd point blank refuse.

There were plenty of opportunities for the bike to move over and help the progress of traffic.... Why did the bike not undertake on the nearside like they normally when at the traffic Q`s (not that I agree with that) . Why is nothing done to make bikes accountable road users. They are getting a menace in my area with our narrow roads as almost all of them have no consideration for other road users.

Never seen a driving instructor do this. why this way, when you look ahead and and to the curb, you see the position of the car as opposed to the curb. You will learn nothing from this, with a open door. Can you just open the door on the highway, because I can't see if I'm coloring between the lines🤣🤣🤣
