A Deluded Viewer | 2 Fast 2 Furious

This viewer of mine sent me in five clips expecting me to point the finger at other people, but he's in for a surprise! What makes it worse is the fact that he says he is an IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) observer who oversees and mentors drivers trying to improve themselves. I think I've probably lost a subscriber in doing this 😂

When i first got a dashcam it seemed i encountered a lot more idiots but then after viewing the clips it was my own driving that contributed to the bad situations that occurred. I think my driving is a lot better these days and I'm a bit more patient with other folk and now i very rarely have anything worth saving on my cam.

This is the issue with a lot of these “cammers”, they seem to get confused between being ‘safe’ and being ‘right’. We all see poor or often, dangerous driving on the roads but most of us just keep our distance and don’t react. It’s worrying to see how people react to these everyday (albeit dangerous) situations, racing up behind them and expressing their frustration. Just let it roll of your back, you’ll likely never meet these people ever again so why get so upset? Calm down, you’ll live longer!

"The IAM RoadSmart member who submitted clips to Ashley Neal has now offered his resignation, which has been accepted. The driving in the clips on which Ashley has commented do not uphold the Advanced Driving standards we coach people to achieve. All our observers hold a formal qualification, accredited by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI). This member did not hold that qualification and was not entitled to claim to be an observer for IAM RoadSmart."

I think that's really positive news - hopefully this guy can get some advice and improve both their driving and their attitude. I viewed the clip on a laptop rather than the phone for the first time earlier and so could see the speeds clearly- it was quite frightening.

I had a half day training with an IAM observer 30 odd years ago and he was obsessed with the running commentary rather than just safe driving. Nearly crashed because rather than just applying the brake I said "someone's pulled out so I will brake" before I applied the brake. Would like to see you try their test - it's bonkers.

The clip at 5:05. A defensive driver would recognize that the BMW would not be able to see them in their wing mirror due to the nature of the turn, and would be ready to slow in case someone cuts across. It's similar to the dangers of driving in other's blind spots. Many older drivers have a habbit of indicating right as they start their manoeuvre.

@@andyalder7910 that's a fairly sweeping judgement to make about the IAM based on 30 minutes with a single observer 30 years ago. Sorry if you have had a bad experience but have a look at some of the other comments which explain what the IAM test is about and some of the principles behind it. Basically observing, planning and managing situations to minimise risk; much in common with what Ashley demonstrates so well on this channel. Nothing bonkers about that.

I think many are missing the point, when you display the IAM badge on the front grill you can get people deliberately cutting you up, pulling out in front of you and undertaking you, once you've experienced that crap for a few years, you know exactly whats going on.

I'm a middle aged bloke who's been driving since forever. I recognise some of the traits this guy has and might be guilty of some myself. I have recently been trying to correct some of them and Ashley has been an absolute find. These videos show even long term drivers that we are not always right. Rather than try and get even, take your foot of the gas, let the idiots put some space between you and them and get on with your day.

Yes that's the same conclusion I've come to. I've been driving for donkeys years and now instead of being awkward and trying to maintain how driving used to be I've adapted to these different driving styles on today's crowded roads. Driving has changed, not really for the better, those of us who were used to open roads being used by courteous drivers in the 80s are long gone, we just have to adapt.

I'm embarrased to say that I used to drive like that. Not necessarily thinking I was great, but that I was surrounded by idiots and needed to teach them a lesson (and by doing so endangering myself and others). Luckily I realised this before any accidents happened and now drive a lot more defensively. It's actually way more relaxed that way as well.

Some people put a dashcam in their car and immediately go looking for any reason to show people the video. Dashcams should be treated like a spare wheel or first aid kit. Check it's working frequently then ignore it until you need it.

@@LukeTR2000 Most dashcams that have a bundled card come with sub par ones or ones designed for phones which don't last long when continuously written to. You need ones marked as High Endurance but still expect them to last little more than 6 months depending on how long they're recording. You usually only find out the card has died when the footage you need is corrupted.

In general I don't take a lot of issue with genuine mistakes/misjudgements, but do take issue with things done in "bad faith" - which seems to appear in many cammers. Fair enough if you react properly and curse the other driver out (though ideally that should only be in jest imo!) but it's generally easier to improve on judgements than it is on mentality towards others...

The standard he displays is nowhere near to the standard taught by IAM. He should be reported to the Chief Observer of his Group who I feel Shure will stop using him to give Coaching sessions. Just to put things in perspective 80mph on needle speed is 84 mph so the cammer doing 81 is pushing towards 86. And when he's driving towards the 40 sign at 45 he's basically doing 50 on needle. He's bloody insane thank god speed speedometers are out otherwise the speed he is traveling at would be a lot higher.

On this one Ashley I agree. If this guy is an IAM Observer then its time for retraining. I did 8 years as an Observer and got a great deal of pleasure out of seeing a persons driving improve, it also helped my driving and kept me up to speed (or not as the case may be). If there is one lesson you should take away from IAM driving its restraint, clearly long forgotten in this case. Keep up the good work and yes I am trying to apply your skills and observations to my driving.

The IAM base their courses on Roadcraft: the police driving handbook, which is also used by other emergency services to teach their drivers. The general principles of Roadcraft are applicable to all drivers (there is only one chapter in the book about using exemptions). Chapter 1 of Roadcraft is all about attitude and is basically the opposite of what was demonstrated in those clips. He's also disregarded the principles of about 4 other chapters. I would seriously consider contacting the IAM to verify if he is genuine and to share this clip with them if he is.

​@@ashley_neal Wow, when I watched the video I came to the conclusion the person who emailed must be falsely claiming to be an IAM observer. That it appears to be true is absolutely appalling. But I feel you need to let the National IAM people know not just the local group - I suspect there are small local groups where all the people involved know each other well - if that's the case here they make not take this nearly seriously enough. He clearly comes nowhere near the standard of a safe competent driver, nevermind an IAM member, and certainly not an IAM observer. Not only is he not suitable to be an observer, his entire IAM membership needs to be rescinded - but encouraged to reapply for membership (membership, not an observer) so that an actual competent observer (preferably from a different group!) can hopefully teach him to rein in his ego, attitude, some defensive driving skills and how to resolve situations rather than exacerbate them - and then demonstrate to an examiner (often ex-coppers) that he has developed his skills before he can be a member again. Heck at the skill level he is at I think he'd would benefit from some normal lessons from a driving instructor first before even going the IAM route - though I'm not convinced he would actually listen - i'm sure he thinks he knows better than a 'lowly' (in his mind) driving instructor. He's an IAM observer don't you know?! Really disappointing and frustrating to see the dreadful way he is representing the IAM here, he didn't need to bring that up and you wouldn't have known if he hadn't, but in the arrogance of doing so he has done such damage to the IAM name. And I dread to think what kind of 'tuition' he has been giving to others who have been looking to actively improve their driving skills - I hope the IAM go through their records to check who has been tutored by him and go back to them offering and encouraging sessions with a quality competent observer to eliminate any lasting damage he has caused as an observer.

@@ryanmitcham5522 I noticed in the first clip the sat nav said 34mph in a 50mph then 47mph then 56mph so the car keeping a good distance behind was catching up because the IAM driver wasn't doing 50mph in the first place, they both seem to have encountered a junction or roundabout a short time beforehand where there might have been an earlier encounter, however the driver undertaking was approaching the roundabout far too fast to keep control to stay in lane, whereas the IAM driver was approaching at a reasonable speed moving into the correct lane about the time they should.

Being retired traffic officer I think your cammer didn’t get past the front cover of the Road craft book. Two years ago I was fortunate enough to meet and chat for a whole day to one of those people who genuinely is a top ranking driving instructor and examiner. This particular person turned learning it all into a lifetime hobby. During their working life it included military and police among other things. They could drive and teach and examine at every driving discipline in every vehicle possible. To say they were interesting was an understatement! Anyway, during that day he managed to answer a whole heap of questions I couldn't find the answers for. Then I asked: The IAM? Is it worth me joining and doing my advanced driving with them. His answer was priceless - no. When I asked why, he explained that it's nothing but a motoring club for people who think they're clever and good drivers and they're not. He explained the snobbish chummery within that closed group of motorists. He advised me to steer clear and research advanced driving and that there are far better avenues to achieve it. Your video here does not surprise me one single bit.

Sometimes I watch dashcam complilations and will see multiple submissions from the same user and wonder how they seem to have so many clips to share. I know I don't drive anywhere near as much as I did before Covid, but I certainly didn't come across so many displays of bad driving myself. I wonder if it's because some people find themselves in so many of these situations because of the way that they drive themselves. The practice of defensive driving is a very important thing to do. Not just for yourself, but for everyone. There is no point forcing your way into a situation only to make it worse and utlimately rise blood pressure.

I'm currently driving in rural Lincolnshire, now I am sure that the standard of driving is exactly the same country wide, but living out in the sticks the driving one encounters is much more polite. I've had a dashcam a year and had one notable incident worth keeping. But should I drive down to my old haunts around Watford I would get ten or more just driving across town. It may be the driver, it may also be the pressured driving environment they find themselves in.

Your videos have; over the last few months, really helped me improve my driving. I'm now less often triggered by other motorists. My stress levels have decreased when commuting. My journey times have not increased, and in some cases have decreased. I brake less heavily and dont find myself in sketchy situations as much. Still got a lot of work to do, but I feel like I'm getting there. Sadly, I could have recognised a lot of what this guy is doing in my driving not that long ago. I’m glad that IAM are looking into this. In all of those clips I did not see one single element of advanced driving. I haven’t done IAM, I’ve done RoSPA, however the fundamental principles remain the same - cammer has a chip on his shoulder, his “qualification” has gone to his head, yet advanced drivers are told to constantly self evaluate and be critical of ones own driving!

Not a very good advert for the IAM, of which I'm a member. I hope this doesn't put anyone off joining the IAM, I'm sure any IAM member would be appalled by his driving. I'm also a member of RoSPA Advanced Drivers. Not saying that RoSPA is better than the IAM but they do grade Bronze, Silver, Gold rather than the simple pass or fail of the IAM, and you do also have to do a refresher test every 3 years which keeps you on your toes. When I did my Observer's test with the IAM in 1990 the training was very comprehensive, about 30 hours of theory and 30 hours of practical delivered by a Police Driving Instructor - and that was in addition to the training to pass the Advanced Test in the first place. But that was the policy of the local group at the time. Despite all the test passes that I've had (Observer and Senior Observer with the IAM and 9 or 10 RoSPA tests, all at Gold level) I never think of myself as a 'good' driver, rather 'capable of improvement'. Something the driver in this video could perhaps take on board.

I am a member of the IAM or IAM Road Smart member as it is now called. It is good to see that so many members have responded to these clips and that the person alleging to be an IAM Observer has now been removed from any connection with the organisation. The clips submitted by the alleged IAM observer show him committing numerous Road Traffic Act offences, speeding, driving without due care and attention bordering on dangerous driving etc. The Institute of Advanced Motorists was founded in 1959 and I would think that most Driving Instructors would have heard of it and support its laudable aim of improving car driving and motorcycle riding standards and so enhance road safety. When someone submits clips alleging to belong or represent a particular organisation I believe it would be prudent to contact that organisation to check their position within that organisation. This is my personal view.

Wooooaahh! Driving at people at 70mph because you don't like what they're doing - what's that about? I'm sure most IAM observers who I'm sure do great work would be horrified and this isn't representative. When did your viewer take his IAM test and when did he qualify as an observer? I'd be interested to see if the IAM themselves have any comment on this. I'll declare an interest in that I went for the RoSPA advanced test myself and am now a voluntary tutor for them. RoSPA requires a retest every three years, which feels like an advantage (until about a month before your retest anyway :) ). But that's not to denigrate the IAM at all, quite the opposite; we're both in the same game - helping people who want to improve their driving and gain more enjoyment from it and so improving road safety. Although I understand IAM don't require a retest I believe they do encourage them and have introduced further qualifications for drivers who want to develop beyond their standard test. So I'm just a bit shocked by these clips.

@James Stewart They are both based on Roadcraft. Any perceived differences are down to local groups/individuals. The core principles are the same. (PS. You'd fail your ministry test if you didn't drive at the posted limit if it was safe to do so).

@James Stewart Having done both , they are not so different ; in old days IAM was more or less Rospa Silver ( or LSD class 2 ) ; Rospa Gold ( LSD Class 1 ) was higher and Bronze was technically a 'pass' but not great .

Before lockdown I was starting out doing the IAM course, from what I did this guy cannot be an observer. Its basics are about safe progress, good positioning, forward planning and anticipation. That last word is the most significant one that is missing from this claimed observer’s skill set (clearly all are in short supply) Anticipation allows a degree of tolerance to other’s mistakes, we all make them whether you’re an IAM observer, ADI, PDI or regular driver, when faced with other driver’s mistakes we all need to do as you always say Ash, chill out. Lastly, IAM observer my a**e!

He looks to be the typical impatient "I'm more important than you" driver. I used to be fairly aggressive when I was a less experienced driver. These days I find the best way to react to drivers making mistakes is to ease back and give them room. Patience when driving is actually the hardest thing to learn but often the best course of action in my view. "Drive to arrive" and finding another route for any pent up aggression are the best philosophies.

With all the dashcam videos around my girlfriend has started joking that when someone is a dick and I slow down or back off I'm doing it wrong and I should be speeding up and flashing my lights at them to try and antagonise as this is the common trope in many. I'm glad the IAM now approve this behaviour! In all fairness to the IAM I'm sure the guy is either having you on about being an IAM observer, or the IAM have absolutely no idea this guy drives like that when he's on his own. I've passed three driving tests, Bike, Car and Bus. all full licences, and I know many others will have done more. I would expect most, if not all of them, of them will probably feel the same way I do. I find it actually sickening to find out most drivers only stare at the car in front, and only check their mirrors because they were told to, not because they feel any need to! Motorcycle instructors should hammer home the importance of forward planning, good observation, anticipation and positioning. Because bikes are small we have the advantage of being able to choose the lane position to best suit our observations, and conditions, this takes planning ahead 10, 20, 30 seconds or more down the road looking through the back window, over or down the side of the car infront to see what's happening ahead of them, will they stop suddenly? Is someone 6 cars ahead indicating to turn, will they have a gap, so you can anticipate the whole line of cars will slow or won't they, does this mean I need to change my road position, increase distance, or get ready to filter because oncoming traffic is heavy and we'll be here all day. Any decent biker will be thinking things like that almost constantly on a ride, And yes even when we're doing naughty speeds... of course there are jocks who will just ride like they stole it without much thought... usually it doesn't take too long for them to become pizza stuck in a lorries front grill. The PSV (Bus) licence is actually very similar even though it's kind of the opposite to bike, slow and large, vs fast and small. But due to the weight and cumbersome nature planning is even more ESSENTIAL, seriously like you wouldn't believe! A good bus driver can slip through a congested narrow road with parked cars and people crossing all over the show, more effortlessly and safely than the bint in the range rover that's 4 foot narrower! It's all about planning, and observation, understanding how the vehicle moves, and literally using every inch! (That's what she said!) On a bus you're looking for obstacles, braking events, the OAP at 08:28 looking at her watch ready to stick her arm out at bang on half past! All as far ahead as you can physically see, looking over the top of a dozen cars to notice the skip half on the road that I need to position for now so I can pass it straight, rather then when I'm on top of it and have to swing over the oncoming lane. A good driver understands signalling to over drivers not only with lights, but also by actions. If I change my road position it shows the drivers behind something must be up, and they will move too, this can avoid cars ploughing into breakdowns on the motorway, or hitting road works signs because you know the pleb behind is watching my bumper and not the road -_- and it means they will tend to follow me rather then have a near miss. A lot of this sounds very basic, but few people really actually do it... and the IAM and RoSPA should stand for it all. Being a good driver isn't about driving like you're on a test all the time, it's about being confident, natural and fluid, it's about picking up on, and transmitting implicit and explicit signals and about not just remembering to check your blind spot like you're told to as if you're a robot, but feeling just as uncomfortable not checking them as a normal driver would be setting off blind folded! Like it's a second nature and I think anyone who's only ever driven a car will find that quite difficult to develop. It's a shame it's not practical to have everyone take a two week course driving busses, lorries and bikes as well as just a car as it would open so many peoples minds... in theory...

At no point does this 'driver' show any IAM characteristics in his driving. To send these clips in for comment clearly shows he's either not been coached properly or just doesn't drive to the system. No competent driver having passed their IAM test would drive like this as safety and defensive driving are two of the mainstays of advanced driving.

Shortly before lockdown 1, I was looking at getting some advanced training, just to polish up my driving a little more. I believe the IAM charge a small fortune, while one organisation offer their services (often ex Police Advanced drivers) for free just to make the roads safer. Kinda makes me want to avoid the IAM like the plague, if I’m honest.

Advisory limits are generally completely ignorable in normal weather. I go through each one of them once at the advised limit to make sure it's not a hairpin, then ignore them completely in future.

I used to get hot under the collar when I see other motorists drive inconsiderately and react badly but I learnt to keep my cool as best as I can. You can't control what other people do, like the idiot in the Dacia (1st clip). Best let them carry on and keep your distance.

I watch a lot of these type of videos and often wonder if I’m the only person that feels the cam car is as much of an issue as the one the camera is pointed at? Obviously not (having watched this and read some of the comments) I drive a van approximately 500mi a week and have never had a collision or close calls like these because I react to a situation where it may or may not evolve into a problem, regardless of who is right or wrong. I feel as a road user you have as much obligation to avoid a collision as everyone else. If there is something you can do to mitigate the chance of damage or harm, you should do so.

I know that first clip road well and although not correct the undercut is common at that junction on busy times as it opens up to three lanes at the roundabout, two of which are for a right turn. The undertaker is wrong but as this chap is likely local judging from the other clips I also recognise I'm surprised he's surprised. It's also a 50 zone over the whole clip so his speed is over the whole time. Very poor.

Just been through the other comments, wow, thought I was being a wee bit cruel, other keyboards must be dripping with vitriol! But, honestly, he is deserving of every criticism. And yes, first clip the car in front DID brake test him...time to ease off the right foot and put some distance between the vehicles. Coming off the motorway, those fancy direction arrows are warning of a tight bend, not to approach at such a speed as to end up ploughing through one! He'd get a surprise if he tried that on some roads in France, I've come across quite a few they must have tested with an F1 car, I soon learned, after entering one at just under the recommended max.speed, and thinking I wasn't gonna make it round the curve!

In every situation I started by imagining that Ashley is driving and as soon as I am convinced Ashley wouldnt act how they did I drink. :) pretty hammered ngl . . . . . Either way this guy just has a hugeeee ego and that IAM membership is not helping him thinking he is always in the right as he passed the test. Problem with many as shown on this channel. It seems that a lot of good driving comes down to being 'mellow' in the sense that you: leave space, brake gradually, slow down when you need to, turn the other cheek and put distance between you and dangerous drivers... Shame that so many self-appointed 'good drivers' act the opposite way... letting testosterone do the thinking...

These videos do seem quite good quality. I think this guy might be a decent IAM observer, but behind the wheel of his own car, his anger/ego over shadows his actual driving ability. Accelerating into situations isn't ideal at all.

Wow, just wow! Totally and utterly the wrong attitude. He needs to serious re evaluate his whole approach to driving, be far more defensive in the way he drives..and take a very large chill pill. He may very well be "certified" with the IAM but continue to drive like that and he may well end up being "certified" in a wooden box. Hopefully not. He probably is an IAM observer. Problem I find with the IAM is that once you have passed the test, which is about an hour and a half long, you don't have to do any further tests. Also, as soon as you pass most local clubs try an encourage people in becoming an observer. I know this is it happen to me. Passed my IAM test and without any further training was asked to become an observer, something that I honesty thought I wasn't qualified for. Learning to pass the IAM test yourself is one thing, teaching someone else is a totally different story. That said, I would definitely encourage people to do the advanced driving test, it teaches you the system of car control, something that was clearly missing in watching these clips!

I watch dash cam compilations a lot and often notice that dash cammers overreacting to other people's mistakes is just as big (if not bigger) problem. Someone's pulling out in front of you - yeah, not great, but how about you take your foot off the gas a bit instead of beeping and shouting (or worse, overtaking and brake checking)?

I think the one at 4:30 was the only one that was reasonable. I don't think stopping from 50 mph (which, unlike in most others, seemed a fairly reasonable speed) was necessarily possible in that space. Solid white line or not, avoiding a collision is a perfectly good reason to go offside.

All the "good drivers" I know seem to drive like loonies. All the "advanced drivers" I know are generally are even worse than the "good drivers". I like to think of myself as a safe driver, It's not hard to drive correctly and responsibly for most of us, speed limits are not targets to be broken and the car infront doesn't need to see how white your teeth are or how well your horn / lights work or that you have a booboo on your middle finger!
