If you see a hazard in the road, like at 7:14, drop your lights down to dipped or preferably side lights with hazards on to give those coming the opposite direction a good chance of seeing what is in the road. Leaving full beams on only result in preventing those coming the other way from seeing While we are on the subject of full beams…please turn them off when you are on a motorway or dual carriageway and a vehicle is coming the other way. They might be further away than “normal” roads but are still being blinded 👍

Definitely. And this is why it's illegal to stop against the flow of traffic with your headlights on - dipped or main beam. Any passengers alighting from the car into the road are completely invisible to drivers on your side of the road. I've seen this many a time - or not seen it, as the case may be.

Driving without lights (or the wrong lights for the conditions) has been getting worse the last 10 years. It's fairly common to see drivers with no rear lights around here either at night or very early in the morning around here. And it's not helped by manufacturers using permanently illuminated dashboards, front DRLs and to some extent selectable auto lights (which are usually in the off position). My theory is, driver jumps in the car in the morning, dash is lit up and they see the DRLs reflecting off the car parked in front and drive off. And when they're already driving and it gets dark.... dash is lit up and they see the reflection of the DRLs off the car they're driving behind or off a reflective bollard.

@@kiradotee it's because you must switch them off in cars generally speaking (if you leave it on, your battery will be dead, because parking lights will stay on). And it had been the case for many years. If some or most newer cars are different, then people simply do it because out of the habit. So many years of training to not forget it. Beeping alarms if you leave it on, etc. Hard to not switch it off, even if car allows that. Plus, never trust electronics. Better to be on off than to be sorry in the morning.

@@PovilasPanavas They're all electronic now. My car is a 2015 model. The light switch, ambient light sensor, auto high beam sensor, hazard switch, steering column stalks etc all communicate over the CAN bus to the body computer (BCM). The BCM controls the lights either directly or via the TIPM (like a "smart" fuse / relay box). Things are off when the BCM (or other controller) switches them off. A car battery can run a small computer like that in standby for ages though.

Hi Ashley. I would like to give some Dutch perspective on clip 0:25 - 0:50. Dutch LAW dictates that before doing a risky manoeuvre like a 3-point-turn, you have to yield to all traffic. However, once you've initiated your risky manoeuvre, Dutch CODE all traffic must yield to you. (The risky manoeuvre seriously disrupts flow, and therefore must be finished in the shortest amount of time possible.) This is very similar to your comment in v=PhqKnmBskVQ (6:30): "Two pedestrians have already put themselves in a hazardous spot by entering the road, so let them leave that spot as quickly as possible". Even though cyclists in NL enjoy a lot of protection as the vulnerable road users, this guy would not get an easy ruling. I do understand that in this nasty cold weather, you want to get home as soon as possible. I speculate that he cyclist doesn't have a drivers license, otherwise he would've passed in front of the car - instead of behind. Or maybe he was put off by the blue car just out of screen that appears at the end of the clip.

A good collection of shockers. The one with the closest near miss in the history of the world highlights why traffic light-controlled crossroads are some of the most dangerous junctions you're likely to encounter. Those turning right often don't have a clear view, and those going straight ahead suffer from Moses Syndrome - where they believe God or some other force will clear a way for them. While the right turner will almost invariably take the blame, treating those junctions like you'll be lucky to escape alive is a better approach when driving straight ahead.

The road design from 01:40 is diabolical. Some LHA has installed an optional cycle lane, which can be driven in and parked in at will, 'protected' by diagonal stripes within a dotted line, which can be entered if it is "necessary" and "can be seen to be safe". The whole shebang then stops at a junction, where vehicles are required to stop before turning, where traffic to the left - motors or cycles - are proceeding straight in a lane to the left. I'll not get onto the guidelines for painted bicycle lanes on 40mph roads, and the research showing they increase collisions. Is this near Plymouth, by any chance, as one location where they are still doing dangerous stuff like this?

4:24 - I'd already spotted what the Audiot in the rear camera was going to do; the only question was "when?" 08:45 - Major kudos to your cammer for at least reducing the severity of that impact.

Grey Mazda 3 car at around 7:44, Tax expired 29/10/23, not sure when the clip was taken but in my experience bad driving often goes hand in hand with poor upkeep of relevant documents for their car.

At 6:02, "Would they have done that if there was a police car around?" Oh wait... Had there been a yellow box camera at that junction to capture this incident with the police car, I wonder what the outcome would have been, given they weren't on an emergency run. Or maybe if there had been a camera there, they would have switched on their blues and twos to er...."simulate" an emergency? Would they subsequently have to back that up with a corresponding call log?

That final clip: I believe that was my fellow Canadian, Michael Bublé doing his Christmas special, namely A Very Bublé Christmas in a Yellow Box Junction. I believe he was on his way to do another one of his Asda tv ads. On a sidenote, I am literally about 10 mins from where he lives here in greater Vancouver (North Burnaby).

'Something German or an SUV!' That has to be quote of the month. Here in the West Midlands in recent years, the BMW 1 Series seems to have been disproportionately involved in crashes resulting in the death or serious injury of someone other than the BMW driver. They invariably escape their little blue tin box with little or no injury. How do they do that?

1:40 What is that, 3 points? I see red-light jumping like that daily in the city where I work, and always wondered if anything would be done if I sent the dash cam clip to the police? I've seen cars whizz through red lights and miss lorries by milliseconds. I'm not bothered if the red-light jumper gets crushed, but I don't want them to run over any innocent people pushing prams, riding bikes, minding their own business etc.

In addition to the "Doing a Jeremy" quip, I also loved the comments of "I don't think my viewer's been watching my channel for very long" as well as "The other driver's a bit of a plumb". For me, it's not only the actual expressions but the way Ashley delivers them and the intonation in his voice that makes it even funnier.

10:30 Drunk nutters like that terrify me…you never know what they’ll do next, maybe turn violent, throw a bottle at your car or even try to open your door. You can’t assume it is just ‘merriment’, things can turn nasty very quickly with drunks. Edit: This happened one evening as I drove past some jeering pedestrians (they were on the pavement) at pub closing time….a steak and kidney pie smacked across my windscreen and caked on a wiper…made me jump. I was too worried to stop and remonstrate.

2:26 Welcome to the club! I absolutely love my Focus ST Edition.

Enjoy it whilst it lasts. I had a 2017 Focus ST-2 (not the ST Edition) hatchback. 2017 reg, 2 litre turbo petrol with 247bhp. In early 2022 the engine went bang whilst doing 70mph on a dual carriageway. Massive hole in the top of the engine block. Car had done 77k miles and was just under 5 years old (registered March 2017). Engine was wrecked, ended up selling the car to co-part as a non runner for £4k. Took a huge loss, was worth £10k-£13k for similar age and mileage. New engine was £5k plus labour. Insurance wouldn't pay out since it didn't catch fire and it was out of warranty with ford anyway. I lost thousands. Decent used engine was £3,500 plus labour (around £5k all in) with no guarantee as to how long it would last or before something else broke. Got a BMW 3 series 335D after that, goes like sh*t off a shovel. Much less firm even on Run flat tyres than the ST was, quicker than the ST was (335d does 0-60 in 4.6 seconds) and has 4 wheel drive unlike my ST. Also has a lot more space and came with more equipment as standard even though my BMW was a "low spec" model. ST came with no parking sensors, no reverse camera, no cruise control, no electric seats, no heated seats, no electric folding wing mirrors.... absolutely bog standard. My BMW (M performance variant) as standard came with parking sensors despite being made the exact same year the ST was.

Speaking of viewer fails I failed my practical test by going through a 30 zone at 45 Context: I was on a dual carriage way and was instructed "at the roundabout we are turning right following the signs for the A61 Sheffield" I did my mirrors, signal and maneuver and was concentrating on what was up the road and looking for A61 on the road completely missing the 30 mph sign . It's my fault I let the ball drop

Oddly I got away with doing the same, very similar situation although in my case I had extra hazard of cyclists joining in front of me from a layby just after the speed change. Fortunately I spotted a repeater (it was unlit road so appeared to be national speed limit) straight after dealing with the hazards and corrected my speed. Got a minor because the examiner recognised the priority was initially safe riding, it was my bike test, and that my observations were good once I had dealt with keeping the cyclists safe.
