Thanks for the tips, as I haven't visited the Algarve yet. The first time I was in Lisbon, I also used a car within Lisbon, because I also made quite a few trips out of the city, but if you plan to stay mainly in Lisbon, you don't need a car. Especially the large number of roundabouts in the city will kill you. Definitely agree with you about the roads outside of Lisbon.

Thanks for sharing the trip plan and some insights! We did this trip in reverse just yesterday: Sagres to Lisbon. Such outstanding places to visit.... We really enjoyed stopping in Vila Nova de Milfontes for lunch - such a beautiful town :) And you are certainly right about giving it as much time as possible.... best to plan on a full day I think to have some nice stops, one good rest, one or two swims and some sightseeing 🤙 Cheers!

Thanks for info .were planning on flying into Lisbon and driving to meet to Tavira. You changed my mind about driving straight to Tavira and I would of missed the entire coast . same thoughts about a larger vehicle for those side roads . good fun video 👍😄

We used Enterprise car rental, and booked in advance which made it easy on the day of to pick up the car. There are cheaper options, but I recommend renting your car from a reputable company to avoid any hidden costs. Also, i have auto insurance through my credit card, so check to see if you have that too, and then you don’t need to pay for the added insurance while renting the car.

@@jodiegordon I have the same thing with Bank of America travel card. I was wondering how safe that is with coverage if I got into an accident.

@@adamd5397 it should be super safe as long as all of the coverage is included. One important thing though, if you sign up for the rental cars insurance as well as your credit card insurance, it will make your credit card insurance null and void, so you have to make sure to say no to the rental car company’s insurance.

While I drive a manual normally, I wish that automatic was more common for hire cars in Portugal give they drive in the other side of the road.

Yes! We had to get an automatic, which definitely adds to the cost!

Unfortunately that’s one area we lacked in planning! There were definitely cute spots with views at Odeceixe Mar Beach, but we didn’t end up stopping to eat at any.

I'm considering flying onto Faro, hiring a car driving along the Algarve and the up to The west cost and flying out of Porto staying at various hotels along the way.
