Regarding octane rating, you can always fill up with a higher octane if need be. It won't damage the engine or negatively affect performance.

@@cag19549 I was talking about using higher octane, not lower. I'm aware that lower octane will harm the engine. And actually, despite owners manuals listing a certain recommended octane, you can get a slight performance boost from higher octane fuel in engines that have a higher than normal compression ratio. Your average naturally aspirated car with an average compression ratio probably won't benefit from higher octane. One of my cars for example is naturally aspirated and the owners manual suggests using at least 87 octane. The manual also claims that there is no performance benefit with using any higher of an octane than 87. However this is not true. The engine in my car does advance its timing slightly when filling up with a higher octane. My engine also runs a high compression ratio to begin with. Whether the performance gain is worth the extra 20 cents or not is debatable. But I do notice a tangible difference with stronger low-end torque and less downshifting when I fill up with 91 octane.

49:25 - I was wondering what all the black stuff on either side of the road was. If you look at the satellite maps too (look for Grants, NM), you'll see that the road passes through a big black patch. Turns out it's all from an ancient volcanic lava flow and part of the El Malpais National Monument.
