Right up Highway 395 from Lone Pine and just across the valley from Manzanar is the Reward Mine. The Reward is so large that you can drive your Jeep or truck, or many Jeeps and trucks inside, almost a 1/2 mile. We took The NotARubicon about 1/4 of a mile inside to the first turn-around point. We walked a bit further into the mine and never did find the end and decided to drive back out because it's a bit creepy when you start thinking about how deep inside the mountain you are.

Finally got out to the Reward Mine today. This place is awesome. I have a full size GMC with a 6" lift and 35s so obviously I couldn't drive in. Ended up hiking in and explored all of the off-shoots. Pretty amazing. There's one spot I would've loved to go down into if I was hooked to a winch with a harness. Thanks for the amazing video.

Its all fun and games till u find a shaft with a 5 story tall rock sitting on the floor. Then it dawns on you that rock used to be the ceiling and you wonder if theres a Jeep under it.

lowest point I think is 6'10" near the entry, after that it gets high enough to put our antennas back up near the end.

The first time we visited Reward mine, we took pictures at the entrance, then walked in a few hundred yards, but didnt take the Jeep inside.. This time, we were fearless and drove all the way in. its so large it's not scary.

That mine is considered a confined space by OSHA and MSA (Mine Safety Agency). You had many engines in there producing carbon monoxide probably without adequate air flow. VERY dangerous, you're lucky.
@TheNotaRubicon
@TheNotaRubicon 7 жыл бұрын
The air-flow through the mine via the large top vertical shaft at the rear is substantial, like a constant breeze that you can feel. This probably explains why none of the thousands of people that have driven their truck and Jeeps into it, sometimes, upwards of 10 vehicles at a time, have never, once, had a problem.
@Landops
@Landops 7 жыл бұрын
Significant cubic yards of air with upventing shaft at intersection area. Turn off engines when you arrive and you should feel the flow. Bring parakeets, when the birds fall asleep you should leave, lol. Don't worry, no animals were harmed during our testing, only humans. Nice video.

i had the same thought about engines in a confined space. Good to know about the vent. I still might bring one of those cheap CO detectors....i hang one in my tent whenever I run the propane heaters....
