An untraveled road in a beautiful place , a cooler full of drinks, and a bag full of snacks is better than any drug or any dopamine inducing experience you can find. To travel it with someone you love makes it the epitome of living. Jerry, you are a lucky man. Thanks for sharing what the camera can capture. You do it better than most. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Oh, gosh! This was my childhood growing up in Scottsdale! My mom and dad regularly took us on trips which went over the Apache Road, stopping at Tortilla Flats for a pop or a snack (heard it burnt down a few years back), then on to Roosevelt Lake for water skiing (though pretty sure they didn't haul the boat in that way). As a kid in the 70s it felt like a really wild and isolated place. We had good friends that lived at Punkin Center (always thought it was "pumpkin" when I was a kid and laughed at the name). So glad it hasn't been "improved" by paving it. Thanks so much for this!

I love this road. I flew into Phoenix from the UK in 2002 (when the car hire ranks were adjacent to the airport, now two miles away.) I camped ( tent) by the shore of Canyon lake. Continued from tarmac to dirt road to Roosevelt Lake, onward to Payson. This drive is still firmly etched in my memory.

Oh man, You two drove through my back yard playground . Four years we towed our 18 ft. bass boat down fish creek hill to fish apache lake. So many times we decided to rent a storage space at apache lake and just drive the truck there every weekend to fish. One year i hiked from the bridge crossing fish creek going west . It comes out at the bottom of horsehoe dam. Which holds back apache lake. Its two to five miles i think. ( it was a long time ago) Then you can walk up a service road , back up to route 88. Anyway thanks for taking me down memory lane.

One of my favorite drives for the last 40 years. Nice to see it's back in business! I'll never forget the time two RVs had to pass each other on Fish Creek Hill causing delays in both directions. With some help from spotters, eventually they navigated past each other - by a matter of inches!

Thanks for sharing another fun adventure with Jerry AZ and Tina. Wait, that dirt track is SR 143, as in State Route? If so, it looks like AZ is careful to not over invest in roads. Wow! Looks like someone drove a dozer and blade through the desert and called it a road. Small wonder that you always recommend 4 wheel drive and high clearance!

Here I am! I drove my Honda Accord up El Oso Rd to the top of Four Peaks (and back down the same way) about 10-12 years ago and it was fine - had to choose my angle carefully in a few spots, but didn’t bottom out or come anywhere near getting stuck. At that time, I had read it was graded to be able to be used by people hauling horse trailers but I’m not sure if it’s still maintained that way. You didn’t show my favorite spot, the little loop that makes it so you can get around the sharp corner! It threw me off when I first encountered it (alone with my dog, at dusk…) because I was sure this was meant to be just a straight line road, and suddenly there was this split in the road that seemed to be a fork. I decided to take the right side of the fork, and was pretty amused to find myself just going in a small circle and right back on the same road. Several years later, I rode up there with someone else in their little Toyota truck, and it seemed there were a lot more low spots in the road where even with good clearance, he really had to be careful. I don’t think in that state it would be okay for a normal sedan, so I haven’t tried it again since. I’ve also driven Apache Trail a few times in a sedan, but as you said, that is pretty easy. A little narrow at times and you have to consider the other people coming toward you and stop to give them room,if needed, especially when you’re the one on the hill-side and not the drop-off side.
