I owned a 99 Silverado with the 5.3L engine. NO cylinder deactivation and NO auto start/stop feature. My son in law has owned it since 2019 when I bought a Tundra with the 5.7L V8. Both still going strong!

Cylinder deactivation on GMT900 was a huge pain in the ass. And it didn't really improve fuel economy much at all.

Yeah until they had fused into a solid chunk of metal from rust and corrosion. Every one I knew about in new england got sent to the scrap yard because every component underneath was literally disintegrating, even if the powertrain was still ok.

I've owned two GMT800s. The first was a 2002 2500HD 6.0L, which I traded in back in 2009 for a truck I still own, a 2009 3500HD Duramax. In 2014 I bought a 2006 2500HD with the LBZ Duramax, but only kept it two years. I bought it to use for RV Transport, but gave up that "job" in favor of a real job. A lot of younger folk don't understand that the "Silverado" name was just a trim level up until 1999. Thanks for pointing out that detail. That's what I love about your team - you get the details correct!

Just yesterday I spotted yesterday in suburban Chicago a 1980s Suburban that had "Silverado" on the front fender ahead of the wheel. I'm not a young guy at all but didn't recall that Silverado was anything but the model name of a pickup truck!

It is good to have a choice of engines in the gas/ diesel version. I know i personally wont buy the electric version but glad its there for those that can use it.

That frunk is awesome. Anyone in construction knows the biggest hassle of a pickup is lack of trunk. If youhave tools you need a job box. This truck pretty much solves that problem. Pairir that with ability to power other tools and you have a great site vehicle.

The new Truck have far too many electronic failure points. I will spend $20,000 to keep my 1990 and my 2002 running before i even consider spending $60k to $100k on anything that could replace them .

Smart thinking, those good ole' 1990 and 2002 were simplified like a truck SHOULD be, these "rolling computers" now are just waiting to break down, keep those "tried and true" old trucks.

My 2002 Yukon hit 300,000 miles. My 2004 Yukon is only 210,000 miles. Engines have been exceptionally reliable. The 2004 Transmission needed replacement at 185,000 miles. Passenger side front bearing needed to be replaced. That's it! Failed to start only once due to a dead battery, jumped and replaced. Great trucks both with 5.3 V8.

Reliable, long lived and easy to maintain, it's a true truck and not a iphone on 4 wheels like todays trucks. Americans and the automotive industry has traded durability, quality and longevity for turbo's, big screens and technology......unproven.

That's funny, when I read "reliable, long lived and easy to maintain" I assumed you were referring to the EV. I have two Silverados, a 78 C30 and a 2024 3WT work truck, plus other gas and electric trucks and equipment. With extensive experience with both EV's and ICE there is absolutely no question about reliability and long service. All my electric equipment just works and works for years with no attention whatsoever.

I had owned a used 1st gen Silverado GMT800 truck and sold it in 2012 with 380k on the clock. The truck performed very well. Skipped over a few years and my next truck was a used 2015 F150 lariat crew cab. And this year I came full circle back to GM with a SEV RST. And by far the new truck is the most capable of the three trucks and the easiest to drive, tow and haul. Plus I cut my operating cost down 2/3s as a daily driver. I enjoyed my trucks in the past, however I am getting the most enjoyment road tripping with this new truck.

I bought my 07c brand new in September 06, i still daily it and it has 300k on it now. For the most part its in the same condition as it was when i drove it off the lot. I will drive that truck for as long as i can! GMT800 ftw!!

I have a 1999 GMC Suburban, which was the older body style because they switched the pickups over in '99 but the Suburbans didn't change until '00. It has 90k miles on it and has always been garaged. I will be passing that truck on to my son eventually. Prior to that I had a 1985 Chevy Suburban (square body), which only had 165 HP with a 350 cu in motor! The '99 jumped to 255 HP.

My dad owned an 02 z71 for a few years and it was an amazing truck that I got to drive to school when my car was on jack stands. Tons of miles off road and a couple of crashes and it never let us down. I miss it

Not only is that first gen silverado everywhere but the heart of them are also EVERYWHERE because they've been transplanted in everything you can imagine!! That's for sure the all American truck!! I Love my 99 even more then my new trucks!! I bought it in 07 as my first truck I bought on my own when I was 18 with 45k miles. I put a 4 in lift with 35" tires and it now has 385,000 miles and I haven't put anything more then normal tune ups and one fuel pump and the truck runs perfect!! It hasn't been babied but not abused either its about to get passed to my son now. It's even been drove every winter here in utah and there's not a spec of rust on the frame or body...

Biggest letdown in 20 years is the trucks still have low efficiency on fuel. I drive a 2004 GMC SIERRA reg cab short bed Z71 5.3 and I still average 16mpg after 266k miles. Now if I want to get the same truck I have to get a turbo 4 cylinder that maybe averages 18/19. And for $45k, I paid $27k for mine in 2004. I'll keep driving it too.

If you want fuel economy get a car. Emissions and chasing fuel economy is what are ruining modern trucks. They aren’t meant for commuting, they’re meant for work

I like my fuel mileage on my pickup trucks because I go on Long hauls towing and I hate stopping for fuel. So everyone's saying fuel economy doesn't matter you clearly don't do enough work with your truck to let it matter.

@@foxwithshades7080 the idiotic thing is people want to save a few bucks here and there on fuel by adding cylinder deactivation, variable valve timing, etc but end up have to do costly repairs when those systems fail.

After years, I finally got rid of my 2001 2500. The only non-scheduled maintenance it every had done was the starter replacement. I only got rid of it because I don't need a truck that big any longer.

Still loving my 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 3 crew cab 5.3 with all the options. Every time I get in this truck I think about how much I enjoy driving it. I pull a 6000 lb travel trailer with it all summer.

Great video Kase. Good job! I have said for years the GMT800 was my all-time favorite of the GM trucks. That was the last truck you could still reach over the bedside and grab stuff out of it with ease. They looked great, road great, had comfortable seats and were easy to work out of.

My first truck was a 1999 Silverado 1500 Z71. Best truck I ever had, I put 175k miles on it and sold it...never should have done that. I beat the crap out of that truck and it kept going. Brings back a ton of memories, same color as my 99 ; light pewter metallic.

My old 04 Z71 ran 228K for me over 17 years, has done another 75K in the last 3.5 years for my oldest grandson and I am rolling in a 24 ZR2 with the 3 liter diesel (10K/14 months) after driving a 21 RST with the 3 liter for 23K/2.5 years. I'm a bow tie guy and wouldn't think of owning anything else.

Nice video. My first truck that I actually bought was a GMT800. A 2006 Sierra 1500 SLE2 crew cab short bed z71. To this day the 2003+ GMT800s have the best seats ever put in a truck in my opinion but certainly the best GM has ever had. I kept it for 7 years and nearly 100k miles. My current truck is a 2022 Silverado 2500hd crew cab short bed Z71 with 6.6 L8T engine. It’s been my favorite that I’ve had, but I’d definitely take those 2006 seats.

I still regret letting my GMT800 go it was a 99 Z71 extended cab with a 5.3 had over 200K on original drivetrain the only big issues over the years were a fuel pump an ABS module and 3-4 shift solenoid otherwise it was trouble free I wish I had the room to just park it but I need real rear doors something without faded peeling paint and just smaller ended up back in a midsize truck which is what I had prior

Great video. I bleed Ford blue, but I think the GMT800 is the greatest vehicle platform built. The newest ones now 17-18 years old. They are still everywhere in truck and SUV form. GM hit it out of the ballpark.

All of the GMT800 trucks in new england disintegrated from rust 10+ years ago. They might have been good trucks but they did not last. I know people that literally had theirs towed to the junk yard with good motor and transmissions because the rest of the vehicle was so badly corroded that it couldnt even be worked on. simple brake or suspension work became multi-day jobs because of the cutting and hacking and PB blasting that needed to be done to get bolts and parts separated.

It's not a silverado, but i do miss my 03 Avalanche Z71 2lt. It is one of the smoothest driving, shifting, comfortable vehicles I've owned to date. It was definitely one of the most multi functional vehicles ive owned as well.

I see 2 good use cases for sidewinder: lining up a hitch, or creating space to swing while backing out in a parking lot if someone parked too close on one side.

The Sidewinder feature could be useful off-road to maneuver around trees or rocks. I have seen some custom 4x4s that had rear wheel steering added to make it easier to get the truck positioned on the perfect line. The only thing I hate about the Sidewinder, and all features on modern vehicles, is the long animation sequence on the screen. I'm an impatient person so when I push a button I expect the system to turn on without all the visual garbage. I prefer toggle switches because when I want something turned on I flip it up and by looking at the position of the switch I can tell it's on. When I want it turned off I flick the switch down and it's off. There is no ridiculous visual sequence to waste my time. My favorite thing about toggle switches is that when they are turned off the vehicle computer can't automatically turn any of those systems on.

@jg8263 Just like the vast majority of ZR2 trucks (with dual lockers) will never go off-road. Maybe the second or third owner of a ZR2 will use it off-road, but I think they are the new Jeep. Over the years, I would see several Jeeps on the road with every off-road attachment like Jerry cans, shovel, high-lift jack, etc, but the paint was perfect, and there were no scratches on the rock sliders. People like to pose for pictures with their "hard core" 4x4s but never take them off-road.

2 of my friends have the i6 Duramax, though they haven’t been left stranded on the road, they get constant check engine light that seems to be impossible to resolve after multiple trips to the dealer, both cases check engine light came on couple days after they got delivery of their trucks.

2002 Silverado Z71 with 344,000 miles. Just replaced all the gaskets and seals. Maintenance is cheap, tows about anything. I also have a 2023 Trailboss LT. they’re two worlds apart. It all depends what mood you’re in. 😂

Tiny little red pieces of these Silverado’s is everywhere in Southern West Virginia, the road salt ate the beds, rear lower cab corners and frames in just a few years. After 2 Tacomas that did the exact same thing I moved to the Aluminum truck brand!

@@poppyneese1811 the aluminum fords are definitely holding up better, however I’m seeing several in my area that are corroding nearly as bad as their steel counterparts. I assume they’ll start to look like the mid-00’s Ford Explorer rear hatches before too long.

My 2003 Silverado SS is pushing 200k and that engine runs as good as when it was on the showroom floor with nothing but oil changes and a set of spark plugs. Recently bought a low mile 2018 to upgrade thinking I was pushing my luck at 200k with the old GMT800. Big mistake, it is nicer in almost every way but the AFM and transmissions are a big problem with the newer ones. Glad I kept the old one around

I wish the removable “midgate” was not unique to the Silverado EV (and discontinued models), as it seems like there is nothing preventing ICE trucks from implementing it and helps to mitigate the crew cabs having a smaller bed. Obviously, you aren’t filling it with mulch, but it sure makes hauling 10 foot pipes and poles easier on the rare (for most homeowners not using it professionally for construction) occasion that’s needed. I can comfortably hang an 8’ board or plywood out the end of the tailgate, but 10’ makes me nervous when people pull up behind me, even when it’s flagged in orange.

On body on frame pickups the cab is separate from the bed, this mid-gate feature is typically on unibody vehicles.

The Avalanche was based on the Suburban which had a frame. Today it is wholly different, the SEV is a body on battery. The battery is the rigid structure which the body rides on and the bed is not separate from the cab. The chassis is the battery. I have seen my truck on a lift, that is a huge battery. So no removable “midgate” on ICE trucks is possible.

I feel so bad for my dad (and myself). He bought a 03 2500HD brand new back in the day. He loved that truck, and I loved that truck. Super reliable. He had it for twenty one years, but unfortunately the last three years of its life my parents moved to Michigan and the winters absolutely ate the frame alive. They moved back home and he drove it for another year and it was deemed unsafe and unrepairable when the inspection came. I was really really hoping to get that truck from him some day and keep it in really nice shape for another 20 years 😢 he was still able to trade it in though for 8k and bought a new Nissan frontier

The new ones are not ever going to be as reliable as the old ones. With the cylinder deactivation and emissions stuff they won’t be able to last 20+ years.

Absolutely no plans on replacing my 06 Duramax , but I did have the opportunity to drive a Silverado EV First Edition, and that really is an amazing truck. $96.5k though. Oof.

The thing that gets me is the 3L Duramax range. Horrible! Everyone talks MPG but not DPG or Dollars Per Gallon. If you are paying $10K more for an engine and 150% more at the pump to get a few extra miles, what's the point? Exactly! There is no point.

Something has seemed to change is the size. The new trucks feel so much bigger. But I looked it up and they're not really that much bigger. GM800 wheelbase: 119-143.5 length: 203.3-246.7 width: 78.5 height: 74-77 GMT T1XX wheelbase: 126.5-147.4 length: 210.7-241.2 width: 81.2 height: 75.4-78.5 But I swear they feel at least 25% larger on the outside. You can barely reach over the thing to get to the dipstick or over the bedside to get things out. The GMT800 was much more accessible by comparison.

I know people aren't going to like this, but the new trucks are better in virtually every single metric. Power, towing, payload, comfort, looks (in my opinion), and obviously options. The only compelling arguments I could make for the GMT800 trucks are price (which has gotten completely out of control) lack of EPA stuff on the diesels, and potentially reliability. I say potentially because in my experience the new Silverados have been very reliable. I get it that people like old stuff but we really don't need to elevate these things to mythical status like everyone did with the old Square Bodies. Grandmas 300,000 mile Yukon should go for $800, not $8,000.

I owned a 2000 Silverado 4.8L V8 4x4 still would have owned it to day if my daughter didnt flip it on a overland trip with her friends. Currently in a 2024 AT4 3.0L Diesel and love it more then my 2021 6.2L Trailboss i owned previously.

I’m looking at getting the 25 Silverado EV LT myself. I like the new tech but don’t need all the bells and whistles. Wish it had the larger battery as an option but the 170kw will likely do for most of my RV towing to my provincial campgrounds

In the UK and Europe I think you would need a C+E license to drive the Silverado EV unladen and another test to pull a trailer and if you’re in business it would need a Tachograph fitting so it’s practically useless.

I have a chevy silverado work truck I paid 44 couple years ago my neighbor has the same exact truck with a few Bells and whistles and paid double. Keep your Bells and whistles I'll stick with the work truck which is affordable or at least it will used to be.

The new, fancy dashes I would assume are not preferred for workers. Chevy has kept the older interior with big, fat knobs and buttons for the lower working packages.

Still miss my 05 sierra. Salt rotted the frame like so many others up here in the northeast. I like my 19 ram more than the new gm trucks but I’ll always miss that old sierra.

2006 Chev 2500 Crew cab Silverado Duramax 6.6 with a rough 376,000 km on it. Still kicking ass however I'm looking at something new.

The entire Automotive world should be GM. Still driving my GMT-400 Chevy Silverado Ext Cab C2500, and GMC Suburban K2500 SLT (both 1997, with L29, and 4L80-E). I would only be interested in an HD version of the Silverado or Sierra.

99-up Silverado's were nice but they rusted out very quickly in the rust belt. Most 99-2013 Silverado's in my area are in the scrap yard But My 1995 GMC is still on the road in great shape.

GMT800's forever, I bought a bunch of them, I have a 2001 1500HD, a 2002 1500, a 2002 Yukon, a 2004 Yukon Z71, a 2004 Avalanche Z71, 2004 Sierra Z71, a 2005 1500 and a 2005 Tahoe Z71, those are all drivers, I have a bunch of parts trucks too

Those engines are garbage. Totally unreliable due to cheap timing chains and burning oil. And the exhaust manifolds are made of tin. No thanks. The Chevy 6.0 is by far superior is every which way.

A like-new GMT 800 is better than the other two. Every battery-electric vehicle is at best a proof of concept. Until range is up, weight is down, charging is fast faster, and I don’t have to be afraid of an incompatible or out of order charging station, they’re not for me.

Just my option. .1-They should have branded the Silverado EV as an avalanche. It has all the previous avalanche features. .2 Taking the new Silverado EV design, and adding a secondary powertrain option like the 3.0 LZO Diesel.

I thought I'll be a Chevy truck kinda guy but I have to say that kinda feel bad that Chevy don't make them how they used to. I recently got a '24 F-150 XLT with the 2.7L Ecobeast as my first truck and tbh I easily would've gotten a Silverado Trail Boss instead, if it wasn't for these unrefined cylinder deactivation systems that they had to slap at the V8s to please the emissions gods at the EPA. Now it's even creeping up on Ford's Coyote V8s. It's just sad, end of an era for sure.

The older trucks are more dependable and still better looking than any of GMs newer stuff! Get rid of the AFM and that dependability would come return.

I do like the way th3 chevys look and I do miss my 02 single cab stepside but after I had a 2014 and lost my ac at 36k and lost power at a gas station till 2am and the power steering kept cutting out on me once a month it kinda scared me away from the brand for a while . I will say though the zr2 and bison in both the Colorado and Silverado do call my name from time to time lol

I still have my 04 Tahoe LT with now 276 thousand kilometres here in southern Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 yes I’m the third owner under the family hand me down. Not to bad ,fuel milage really sucks, electronics is a pain in the ass when it goes but easy to repair and oem parts are getting to be obsolete. Had for six years now
