I am almost certain that the sweet spot for EVs is as much car you can get for as little money with a use case that allows you to charge at home or for free whenever charging is needed.... with the caveat that DC fast charging capability is required if any longer trips may happen. I probably got that from TFL. Since my better half drives an EV6, I appreciate Mary and Jen's insight on these vehicles. Maybe TFLL (Ladies) would be a good addition to the company.

Again, a nice change of pace having Mary and Jen. I love Mary’s reactions to the realities of EV roadtrips (Supercruise, charging costs, etc) TFL should definitely keep them in the regular rotation of hosts. As for the truck.. 98k is A Lot, but you get a lot for that. It’s a great truck with a lot of capability. Personally, it’s a little steep for me, I’m waiting for something in the 60k range, and I think we’ll get there eventually. Overall, a great video! Thanks Mary and Jen for taking us along. Have a Merry Christmas!

The large glass roof without the addition of zone shading -ie , front and back is a missing feature . Never owned an EV , but $56 for 20 plus minutes of your time can add up . But, the range despite the variables that can affect it is impressive. The price is in cyber truck territory

Convenience costs money. I live about 15 minutes away from that charger they used, and I have a level 2 charger in my garage, and at my current electricity rates it would cost me about $17 to charge it from completely empty to 100%. That 400+ mile range would last me nearly a month as well.

No question, with gas at $3(ish) road trips are about 20% more expensive. BUT charging at home is about 80% less expensive than gas, and save a ton of time by not having to actually ever stop at a gas station. Just plug it in and go to sleep. Being able to charge at home, or work is key. I have a 77kw EV that gets about 30-40% higher efficiency than this giant truck. So charging my type of EV is a way less expensive, quicker chore. Plus, it seems my part of the country has better charging options than most other areas. Point is, EV’s are a great option for some, not as much for others.

I bought my Chevy Bolt EV because I had a 160-mile daily commute three to four days a week, and a basic trip to the store is 80+ miles round trip. So range certainly is important, but that being said, I do not consider trucks to be "commuter cars." I think one of the reasons we're starting to see so many people trade their Cybertrucks back in is because many of them weren't already "truck folk." They bought it because it was a Tesla, not because they needed a truck. Most people who are new to trucks don't fully understand the compromises they'll have to make as a result of buying a fullsize truck. Even affluent people with large properties and room for the trucks find that their routine drives and shopping trips are more difficult. Plus, going from a 4 mi/kWh EV commuter car to a 2 mi/kWh EV commuter truck is literally doubling your cost per mile, not counting the more expensive upkeep for the vehicle. The story that doesn't get told is that, for every grizzled farmer or ranch hand you see driving a fullsize truck, there's a Honda Civic, Toyota Prius, etc. parked back at home that they use for grocery shopping, parts runs, etc. It's mostly suburban office workers larping as rural folk who you see driving around cities and on the freeways in fullsize trucks (most often super clean with empty beds).
@is6566
@is6566 Сағат бұрын
There is literally not a single farmer or ranch hand doing grocery shopping and parts run in a Toyota Prius. Have you seen ranches? They have long dirt roads with potholes, mud, and snow and unplowed public roads to drive.

You’re not wrong about doing shopping trips, etc. in a big vehicle. I have a lightning and I’d much rather have something smaller. And don’t get me started what it’s like to go shopping/into town in our diesel crew cab long bed.

@@is6566 Yes, I've been working on big farms and ranches since I was in Junior High. I literally have no idea what you think you're imagining. You don't think farmers get deliveries to their doors from FedEx, UPS, etc.? News flash, we even have electricity and running water. Yes, a lot of ranches have long, gravel driveways and crappy roads, but they are certainly drivable in a basic FWD car. That's why I joke about doing more "off roading" in my Bolt EV than most truck owners do. Maybe you live in a city and this is simply what you imagine farm and ranch houses to look like. 🤷‍♂

@@is6566 The way you describe it, every ranch house is at the end of the Rubicon Trail. The point is, most delivery services will not deliver to homes that don't have paved/gravel driveways off of maintained roads (i.e., roads that small, FWD cars manage just fine). Sure, only about half the UPS drivers will drive down our drive way, especially during winter. They'll usually just walk the packages down.

My Blazer EV doesn't have Android Auto or Carplay, but the only apps I needed were Maps and Spotify, which are in the Play store in the vehicle. It supports Waze as well and Podcasts are streamed using Bluetooth. So far it hasn't been much of a pain forgoing Android Auto. The biggest benefit is Google Maps knows the state of charge and can route to chargers appropriately.

Great video ladies. As usual. I had a Tesla with FSD and my stress levels would spike so high when using it that my hands and feet would actually get sweaty and cold. Over the course of 3 years I owned the car, I used FSD like 3 times. And mostly to check out the “new release” Tesla would put out. It is terrifying to me that people just use it on a daily basis. Also, now that I don’t have the Tesla anymore (I now have a rivian), I’ve been charging on roadtrips at none-Tesla chargers and… yeah… it’s aight at best. I just go to Tesla chargers, which rivian has access to and the only reason why I considered non-tesla EV.

I really like the practical testing of these vehicles. Keep them coming. These 2 present the experience very well. They made the viewing fun and believable. A big no on this for MSRP alone, although it does look like GM improved upon what Ford started doing with EV trucks. I get the super cruise lack of trust. The 1st time I used radar cruise control that would take you down all the way to a stop, I didn't trust it and had my foot over the the brake every time I let it stop me waiting for it to fail. Took quite awhile for me to trust it.

Once again, more Mary and Jen. Great team, always fun to watch. FWIW, the base Leaf that TFL leased (the super deal) is, unfortunately, the worst version for winter. The SV Plus has a much larger battery and a heat pump for the cabin as well as both a heated steering wheel and heated seats. All together, that means much better winter range than the base Leaf. My day to day vehicles are a truck and a Leaf SV Plus. I drive them both in Vermont winters.

So in order to avoid range anxiety you have to spend almost $100K and drive a truck because it's the only vehicle footprint that easily allows the engineers to hide the oversized battery pack. You are going to need about 225 kWh to fill the battery from empty to full, including charging losses. The average US price for electricity is 16.83 cents per kWh. That is less that $38 for a full charge. You are looking at over $100 per full charge if you do public fast charging. Possibly a lot less if you charge at home overnight. If you can't charge at home you shouldn't buy an EV for savings.
@LouisDemer
@LouisDemer 5 сағат бұрын
That's only if you charge from basically 0 to full on a fast charger, which you should hardly need to do. Charging from home is much cheaper.

@@flufflybird $.56/kwh. For those that say “charge at home”, you’re delusional because this is truck, not an around town grocery getter. Trucks usually have 30,000mi/year or more put on them and don’t stay geofenced around your home.

It’s the new Avalanche! It’s stupid to call it a Silverado EV. Not even practical and way too expensive!
@WildernessGuyBC
@WildernessGuyBC 4 сағат бұрын
In my opinion it is supremely practical. You have bigger than an 8' full size bed when you need it and a crew cab that fits 5 adults the rest of the time without the wheelbase of a crew cab long box truck. 450 miles of range is more than enough for my purposes, especially when you consider that it is capable of DC fast charging at 350kw. I do agree that the price is too high, though. Hopefully, some lower trim levels will show up on dealer lots soon with the bed to cab pass through.

How much do you get paid an hour? Take that and figure out how much it costs you to leave your house and go to the gas station and then get back home and add it to what it costs for a tank of gas. Cause with an EV that's a non issue.

That massive battery is a hard pill to swallow. 11 kw Tesla charger at my house…….still two days vs 6-7 hours (if I ever went to 0)…..too much cow bell. I think EV innovation and competition is great….l but if I can have a 50kw Model 3 for 1/3 the price that fills up in 1/4th the time…..with 350 miles of range at 4.5 to 5.5 mi/kw or 3 times the efficiency as this it just becomes hard for this truck to be relevant. They’re not “trying” to innovate….poor engineering….and hitting you in the wallet at purchase and during ownership which is counter to what the experience should be.

We got the "almost free" Fiat EV. Very fun to drive and nice quality but charging at public stations sucks! They hardly work and when they do you wait in line. Only charge at home which makes it work. No way states will go all EV in 2035. They can't fix homelessness but think they can lower earth's temperature by making us drive EVs? Right.
