In this video I drive through Portland, Oregon and comment on how things have changed since 2020. The city back then looked like there is a full blown humanitarian crisis and downtown was taken over by crime, homelessness and riots.
Today things look much calmer, but still problems remain as soon as you distance from downtown.

I grew up in Vancouver Canada in the seventies loved everything about it : outdoors , clean living , affordable, No Airbnb , prior to Reagan Thatcher free market manifesto does not need regulating. My parents were immigrant engineers bought a house after 2 years of living in Vancouver : 30k. I never followed them and rejected the capitalism model of make money to get ahead . No car , no house , no kids lifestyle. It all started to change after late 80’s Vancouver was discovered by wealthy Asians and then slowly wealthy tourists. Price of houses went from 200 to 500 k fast. You started to see drugs on downtown streets and addiction conflated with AIDS didn’t help. As Vancouver rent prices started to also shot up , homelessness became apparent in mid 90’s in Vancouver. It was not as bad as Seattle but drugs were very bad in Vancouver. When I travelled to Portland it always seemed like a quiet more lovable city and very cheap with great infrastructure. I left Vancouver in 98 because rents started to get completely unaffordable and I never made more than 25 k a year. In my small city of Victoria prices for rent were still reasonable. By 2010 people were escaping from Vancouver because of high prices and moving to Victoria and other small towns which put pressure on housing and Airbnb never helps. I decided to leave Victoria before Covid and as if 4 years ago do not live in Canada. I bought an apartment in Tbilisi Georgia and can easily live on my pension there . I will never go back to Canada to live . If people want functional cities they need not just high tech class with high salaries and Asian businesses people who buy houses for millions in cash but also working class people, artists , hotel workers, subsidised housing , rent controls. I go to Berlin often and while it has its problems it’s housing is much more affordable then in Canada and west coast USA. The city has funds to buy housing so that developers can’t just have millionaires living in the city. Sorry for the Rant but I think the only people who are benefiting from Climate change and free market globalisations are rich people while lower middle class and working class are getting poorer. Thank you to unfiltered Capitalism

And now how do you perceive the revolution on the streets of Georgia?

Это грустно. Portland used to be so much fun. Unfortunately the cost of living here has gotten very high along with the crime. They just pushed all the homeless out of the downtown and into all the residential neighborhoods and under the freeways/bridges. It now looks like you are driving through a third world country when you drive anywhere around here. Спасибо за это видео.

6:30, "I didn't want to walk around here for my own safety, I'm a father and a husband, I don't want to be knifed for no good reason" :D This made me lol. So for the rest it's OK to get knifed for no good reason. :D :D

The homeless in Portland are not there due to high rents. They have drug addictions.

No sales tax in the state of Oregon but state income tax is a little high at 8.75% for most people ($9,450 to $125,000 single filers)
