@cleetusmcfarland I've been thinking about your issue with this. I am a scuba diver and have a pretty good understanding of pressures. That engine has double digit horsepower at best, and while the snorkel lets it breathe, the exhaust I believe is an issue. At only a few feet deep, the water pressure starts to increase quite a bit. At 5 feet it is around 3 psi of back pressure on the exhaust. This reduces the power output significantly. I believe this is causing output to be so low that it dies, and also why you can then crank with no start. Put a snorkel on the exhaust with one of your tractor flaps and you should be golden!

Definitely need to get that water pressure off the exhaust. I use to do something similar in a F150 with a 351w. Once the exhuast gets underwater engine power greatly declines. Basically you are plugging the exhaust with water.

@@hawkman4374 Exactly! Engines are air pumps, the more air you move, the more power you make. They are not meant to be air compressors, especially with valve overlap (for scavenging). If the exhaust gains even a little pressure, that fills the cylinder with exhaust gas, which is inert and cannot be re-mixed with fuel for burning.

xllDawsonllx nope. Water pressure is preventing the exhaust from escaping the engine, thus meaning fresh air cannot enter each cylinder. This leads to the engine not being able to create a proper combustion cycle, leading to it stalling.

@@TGears314 I don't think the water pressure is really that big of a factor at that depth to be honest... If he had dielectric grease in all this connectors for the motor and plug wires, make it truly water tight, then it would be fine. I don't think water at that depth can have any more affect on breathing like a clogged catalytic converter would in this situation. I would also recommend letting air out of the tires to help with traction and buoyancy.

No. That's not an issue at all. I drive my ATV underwater all the time and never stalls. Water doesn't offer much pressure against the exhaust escaping. Go blow through a straw in a cup of water. Barely feel the difference between that and out in the air.

Pfft, after the nitro's, he's probably going to weld on some slapper bars, to avoid axle wrap on the drag strip. And then, he's going to put a turbo on it, which he can find for real cheap on the junkyard. … in fact, I hear the old diesel engines often have well maintained turbos on them, and the old. 5.0 loves itself some boost. Heck, that's what Roadkill Garage did with the old Nissan 240Z. They dropped a 5.0 with a junkyard turbo on it, in the engine bay of the 240Z.

At 5 feet below the surface the water pressure is about 2 psi which is roughly equal to the backpressure in the exhaust manifold at idle in normal circumstances. At 20 feet it's about 8.5, so a little more restrictive, but the engine will still have no problems overcoming that. If it stops running for another reason (ignition) it's conceivable it could flood the engine if it manages to leak in and the valves are open but it's not what's killing it in the first place.

Sorry boys, toyota trucks have been going aquatic for many years with normal exhaust . It is the distributor leaking water , they are going to "Balloon trick" it by putting a small balloon on the dist body and sealing the pickup inlet which is sealed with a little rubber grommet/pad . That should solve the firing issue, it has nothing to do with exhaust .

Yep like he said..It's all about physics! And like you said the deeper you go the higher the back-pressure. Vent the exhaust and add an electronic ignition... Those Toyota's go in at high RPM and never get deeper than the middle of the body. I've been diving since the 60's and know what water pressure can do to anything that breaths air, and an engine is just a big air-pump!

In fact there are airbag systems that can be connected to your cars exhaust and by letting the vehicle idle and the airbag underneath your car it lifts it up allowing you to change a tire etc

have you not seen trucks with snorkels going thru rivers and lakes ? the exhaust has nothing to do with it , unless water gets all the way back to the valves, which is not the problem

@@willmc42 those are higher hp trucks which arent affected by the amount of back pressure that the water they go through causes. this tracker might make 80hp on a good day. the trucks im assuming you probably watch are big f2-f350s and or bigger jeeps which all make 300+ hp. the amount of force they exert out of the exhaust is much higher than the tracker, thats why this isnt a problem for them.

Deffo needs a snorkel tail pipe or a reed valve exhaust system and special (marine style) tuning. Cut some big old holes in the floor, anor maybe weld in some grate as a floor. Take out all the windows, and fill that buoyant fuel tank with water (or concrete). Slap some vaseline round the FT/LT wires before you go in (that's how we waterproofed the electrics on my old Mini & L/rover). Oh and don't be hanging out the door when dragging it out. If that falls over and pins you under 2 feet of water.....

They also put dielectric grease in all the connectors, and had the ignition in a waterproof box in the center console. I think electrics are probably even more important than the exhaust snorkel.
