I've always been a fan of the 86 and BRZ (particularly the 86) so its welcoming to see that Toyota and Subaru got together again to make a second generation. I'd absolutely consider buying a GR 86!

@@oekfoh8684 I have a feeling Japan is going into a 2nd golden age of cars just like in the 70s/80s after muscle cars went out of fashion which is happening now with the Camaro about to be killed off for an electric sedan and the hellcat being discontinued in 2024
@MrGreenelight

@@QKvox The Camaro and Hellcat muscle cars are not competitors to 86 or Subaru BRZ, and never have been. They have almost 3 times the power. The BRZ/ 86 competes with the Mazda Miata, Nissan Z, etc. They also do not compete with the only current American 2 seater sports car the Corvette. Come on people........

@@MrGreenelight that’s not what I’m saying I’m saying that manufacturers are moving away from muscle so the Japanese manufacturers are gonna have to fill that hole and this is what they’re doing, just like after the oil crisis in the 73 muscle cars went out of fashion coz of the consumption and now because of restrictions
@MrGreenelight
@MrGreenelight 2 жыл бұрын
@@QKvox Muscle cars are not moving away, the way in which muscle is delivered / supplied is "changing" not disappearing. Tesla and the new Hummer are great examples. Dodge, will discontinue the Hemi V8, they will not discontinue the Muscle. Tesla Plaid is electric muscle compared to the electric Nissan Leaf, or Toyota Prius

Toyota and Subaru sold more 86/brz’s than Porsche sold all their vehicles in the same amount of time. So the sales were decent. Especially for Subaru because Subaru doesn’t sell as many cars as Toyota with Toyota have big sellers like the Camry and Corolla. I’m honestly totally open to getting either car. Plan on going back and forth between a few Subaru and Toyota dealers and just seeing who will give me the best deal.

@@nephilymbass1 If you're seriously considering this car, I would just try to pay sticker plus tax at the dealer of your choice and pre-order one. I may be wrong in my prediction, but buying a new car isn't as easy as it used to be with this chip shortage. Donut Media just made a video on it, shortage of chips means shortage of cars. On a recent road trip, about 10 days ago, I saw 2 massive lots FULL of new cars, just sitting there. Didn't know what they were for until I saw Donut's video on the shortage. They're all waiting for computer parts. I put my name down for a BRZ last month and I'm glad I did, hopefully being the first one in my area to put my name down means I'll actually get it by the promised date in november. Best of luck.

Everyone notches about the back seat being too small. It, you have to realize that in a pinch, the backseat is useable for short distances if necessary. It’s good to know that I can give a few people a ride if necessary. You can’t do that with this car’s main competition, the Miata.

Watched this as soon as I got home from work. As a former BRZ owner (2013 Limited with minor mods) I'm very excited to see and drive this car. @@marvinmurakami8828 it really was, you can have the windows down at 70mph and only feel a gentle breeze. Excellent review, Ryan. And kudos for at least giving the old college try in the back seat. I know it's cramped. But having owned a Mazda RX-8, it's not much worse. (Though the Mazda provided hidden rear doors that improved access.) And for me the BRZ (and GR 86) offers a huge advantage over a Miata and other sports cars with room for only two passengers. Specifically, the back seat provides a spot for my large dog. That means I can share drives with my wife (or daughter) and "Fido." He's very appreciative of that. (Yeah, I know that few consumers consider the accommodations for a 4 footed passenger but at least from their commercials it appears that Subaru understands my family's eccentric ways.) As for the obvious question about of the GR 86 vs the BRZ, I'd give a slight edge to the Subaru. In terms of styling, the BRZ's rear end is less busy and (to my eye) more attractive. And since I put many more miles on mountain roads around Mt. Rainier than on a track (where I prefer 2 wheels to 4), the advantage you cite in terms of stable handling trumps the "toss-ability" of the Toyota. When each vehicle manages to find their way to the PNW, I'll be looking seriously.

@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 3 жыл бұрын
@@drivingsports You have my condolences. Fortunately, my dog didn't need a child seat. On the other hand, the rotary engine's almost non-existent torque below 6000 rpm meant its excellent driving characteristics were difficult access on any but a deserted mountain road. It reminded me of driving a 4 wheel version of a 500 cc 4 cylinder Japanese motorcycle. As a daily driver it was a DOG. Then there was the fact that if the engine was shut off before it reached fully operating temperature it was likely to flood. Once that happened the car had to be towed to a garage with a lift to replace the single spark plug. I learned to deal with it and managed to reduce the risk with a larger battery but that meant the engine cover had to be removed. The problem was so widespread that Mazda eventually added a warning light to the dash in the last year of production advising the driver not to kill the engine until it had warmed up. I put up with it for five years for its strengths and unique "character," but I didn't miss its eccentricities or its mid-teen fuel economy when I replaced it with a GTI.

@@Jaredscott89 You're right. I should have bought one of the 99.99999% of automobiles manufactured over the last 100 years that didn't flood simply when the engine was killed before the engine was warmed up. And if the engine was flooded for some reason a stab at the accelerator and waiting a minute or two eliminated the problem instead of requiring that the car be transported to a garage to have its single spark plug replaced. Yup. It was my fault. 😢

I agree 100% about the preference for a manual. Especially where the automatic is not faster. That said, I will likely be buying a BRZ and will need to decide if it will get a manual and use the BRZ as a second car or an automatic and use the BRZ as my daily drive with my daily stop and go highway/inner city commute. I just sold my 2019 BRZ for not much less than I paid for it new despite 2 years and the new model in the press - all because of this crazy used car market. I plan to sit on the cash till I can get the new one without any dealer mark ups etc in what I hope will be a cooler market. So glad the new one doesn't have a turbo! Put a turbo in this car and it would steal sales from the auto only 4 cyl Supra so partner Toyota would nix it. It would also upset partner BMW.

Why didn’t they add a turbo? Not because it would raise the center of gravity, but that it would add cost, because then you would also need to beef up the brakes, drive train etc to pass regs and provide warranty. How do we know this, because people have been adding turbos and super chargers for years and it doesn’t change the CoG. Doing it aftermarket doesn’t have the same requirements cause any problems/damage is on you.

Awesome to know the BRZ gets the body mounted sway bar and more aluminum suspension components. Seems like the better actual track car and you get a little more for the extra cost. Just noticed this video - very good content I must say! But I am giving the squint eye to the Subaru guy's comment about how they mount the turbo underneath the engine so could not use one on the BRZ. He is being a bit disingenuous - the engine + turbo setup for the WRX is like that sure, but HKS (and others) manage to fit a turbo in without raising the engine or altering the bonnet lines. I'm running a 2012 BRZ with an HKS supercharger mounted on top of the motor. Ok a **slight** raise of the COG but the handling is still amazing and the modest (stage 1 kit) performance change totally fixes the 2 L motor power and torque issues. I can't help thinking the real reason for no turbo in the BRZ is a desire to **not** cannibalize WRX sales.

3:00 - considering there are aftermarket turbo kits that work just fine without moving the engine, hood, seats, or roof up, I think this is just one big cop out. Granted, the car is good with it's NA engine, but Subaru definitely have the resources and packaging ability to make it happen without ruining the car.
@JupiterxBlues
@JupiterxBlues 3 ай бұрын
It would effect weight distibution and effecting the playful handling with a less linear power curve. It also ruins the classic NA feel that many enthusients love and is a dying breed of sports car format. Plus, the cost would put it in the range and power as the supra.... so why would you get a GR86 for $40k+ when you can get a supra, an overall nicer car with nicer interior, nicer sound system, nicer radio/screen/UI more premium looks and feel. The GR86 with a turbo would feel like your getting ripped off for the money. All that R&D just for people to end up buying the supra. Im pretty sure that was the real reason. However, I think that a higher performance model should exist still as a limited option in the form of a 2.7L H4. It could be just a modified version of the current engine. This would keep cost, weight and complexity down while having a hotter version available. Plus, because its an OEM option, it would enable the aftermarket to swap this engine into the 2.4L cars in the future as a CARB legal swap.
