Excellent review, Ryan. And kudos for at least giving the old college try in the back seat. I know it's cramped. But having owned a Mazda RX-8, it's not much worse. (Though the Mazda provided hidden rear doors that improved access.) And for me the BRZ (and GR 86) offers a huge advantage over a Miata and other sports cars with room for only two passengers. Specifically, the back seat provides a spot for my large dog. That means I can share drives with my wife (or daughter) and "Fido." He's very appreciative of that. (Yeah, I know that few consumers consider the accommodations for a 4 footed passenger but at least from their commercials it appears that Subaru understands my family's eccentric ways.) As for the obvious question about of the GR 86 vs the BRZ, I'd give a slight edge to the Subaru. In terms of styling, the BRZ's rear end is less busy and (to my eye) more attractive. And since I put many more miles on mountain roads around Mt. Rainier than on a track (where I prefer 2 wheels to 4), the advantage you cite in terms of stable handling trumps the "toss-ability" of the Toyota. When each vehicle manages to find their way to the PNW, I'll be looking seriously.

@@drivingsports You have my condolences. Fortunately, my dog didn't need a child seat. On the other hand, the rotary engine's almost non-existent torque below 6000 rpm meant its excellent driving characteristics were difficult access on any but a deserted mountain road. It reminded me of driving a 4 wheel version of a 500 cc 4 cylinder Japanese motorcycle. As a daily driver it was a DOG. Then there was the fact that if the engine was shut off before it reached fully operating temperature it was likely to flood. Once that happened the car had to be towed to a garage with a lift to replace the single spark plug. I learned to deal with it and managed to reduce the risk with a larger battery but that meant the engine cover had to be removed. The problem was so widespread that Mazda eventually added a warning light to the dash in the last year of production advising the driver not to kill the engine until it had warmed up. I put up with it for five years for its strengths and unique "character," but I didn't miss its eccentricities or its mid-teen fuel economy when I replaced it with a GTI.

@@Jaredscott89 You're right. I should have bought one of the 99.99999% of automobiles manufactured over the last 100 years that didn't flood simply when the engine was killed before the engine was warmed up. @@gwot didn’t know that, however if the buffeting bothers you, drives me nuts, then at least you can put the passenger window down to get rid of it. Granted if you’re asking a video this would likely make all audio recording unusable.

Very nice, comprehensive review dude. Well, i'm getting old. I was able to drive the '65, 2008 & other year Mustangs at high speed, although I never owned 1, but not so good, strong at it now. I have a small pile of M$ now & I need to be careful not to run out of it as i'm retired, but i'm zeroing in on this BRZ with 6 speed manual as my last chance hoorah with a sports car. Your thoughts?

The heavier engine may upset the balance. I do prefer naturally aspirated engines though. Perhaps a few years later they could massage the engine to put out 250 hp.

Awesome to know the BRZ gets the body mounted sway bar and more aluminum suspension components. Seems like the better actual track car and you get a little more for the extra cost. They still managed to keep it well under $30K which is great. Dear car Jesus though that fake engine noise needs to die.

Just noticed this video - very good content I must say! But I am giving the squint eye to the Subaru guy's comment about how they mount the turbo underneath the engine so could not use one on the BRZ. He is being a bit disingenuous - the engine + turbo setup for the WRX is like that sure, but HKS (and others) manage to fit a turbo in without raising the engine or altering the bonnet lines. I'm running a 2012 BRZ with an HKS supercharger mounted on top of the motor. Ok a **slight** raise of the COG but the handling is still amazing and the modest (stage 1 kit) performance change totally fixes the 2 L motor power and torque issues. I can't help thinking the real reason for no turbo in the BRZ is a desire to **not** cannibalize WRX sales.

Thanks Ryan. Subaru really needs to revamp their colors with this car. Toyota has some great colors; Subaru not so much. A nice vibrant yellow, green or orange. Also maybe a non-metallic/fat gray. Despite looks and limited good color choices, I'd still rather park the Subaru in my driveway. Pure red or WRBlue for me thanks.

3:00 - considering there are aftermarket turbo kits that work just fine without moving the engine, hood, seats, or roof up, I think this is just one big cop out. Granted, the car is good with it's NA engine, but Subaru definitely have the resources and packaging ability to make it happen without ruining the car.
@JupiterxBlues3 ай бұрын
It would effect weight distibution and effecting the playful handling with a less linear power curve. It also ruins the classic NA feel that many enthusients love and is a dying breed of sports car format. Plus, the cost would put it in the range and power as the supra.... so why would you get a GR86 for $40k+ when you can get a supra, an overall nicer car with nicer interior, nicer sound system, nicer radio/screen/UI more premium looks and feel. The GR86 with a turbo would feel like your getting ripped off for the money. All that R&D just for people to end up buying the supra. Im pretty sure that was the real reason. However, I think that a higher performance model should exist still as a limited option in the form of a 2.7L H4. It could be just a modified version of the current engine. This would keep cost, weight and complexity down while having a hotter version available. Plus, because its an OEM option, it would enable the aftermarket to swap this engine into the 2.4L cars in the future as a CARB legal swap.
