​@@Carlos.Rivera It's an entry level car, so it's always going to be cheap. Plus, even if it stayed at higher prices people with questionable taste are still going tog et involved, use wood screws to mount stuff, and attempt to turn the car into a NOPI Nationals fever dream crossed with an Instagram render but made entirely out of bare fiberglass and bondo. Tbh, we want that. It means the aftermarket won't disappear, that we'll keep having choices for mods. It means we might see a third generation once this one is facelifted. Yeah, some cars will get riced out and modded by high schoolers with no tools, planning, or willingness to put in the effort to do it right, but that's been happening since the car was introduced in 2012. Buy one and keep it nice, do things right, and it'll stand out. Mine is now 9 years old and stands out as a clean car because people have had a decade to mess them up.

I got to sit in one at a local car show. It was actually quite a bit nicer on the inside than the previous generation. Also, of course, the exterior looks WAY better, too (imo). If I wasn't obsessed with aiming for huge power numbers with all wheel drive (saving up for an RS3) then I'd totally get the GR86. Sweet little car.

Hi, from Japan!! You have been saying “ winter tires for winter “ for us. You really think about us. Thank you. I have an experience that I was stacked in snow at Tokyo. My car was Mazda RX8 with normal tires. I couldn’t make the car move even just a little. I had to left the car and took a train to get home. I cannot forget the moment many cars passed me even cheap little FF cars. Therefore, I really understand the importance of wearing winter tires. By the way, Japanese car manufacturers have responsibility to build cars which lights turn on every moments for safety so I think you cannot turn off the lights.

They call them "winter" or 'snow" or "ice' tires in North America. They are vital to getting around in the snow belt areas when temperatures drop below 0 celsius or snow begins to accumulate. You are 100% correct - Summer tires are virtually useless in winter conditions - low profile wide tires summer tires are even worse because they increase the surface area which creates less weight per square inch transferred to the road.

@@TerryManitoba These are tires with the Mtn flake logo that are mandatory here in Québec from déc. 1 to mid mars & I think that's the only place in NA that requires us to do that. Vital like you mention but not if you not going outside big cities .

@@oi32df BUYER beware - I have 3 peak tires that are OK in winter conditions (K02's) & I have 3 peak tires that are optimize for winter driving (Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5) Gold Standard Son... Big difference between the two.

Thank you guys for all your coverage on the GR86. I owned a GT86 and ordered a GR86 as soon as I could here in Switzerland. Had to wait unexpectedly a bit longer than anticipated, but I finally got my car in the first days of October 22. It is my daily driver and as a motorcyclist I dare say the Toyota GR86 is one of a very few cars that I fully enjoy driving every day, every hour and every minute. I love this car so much. Thank you Akio Toyoda!

@@veganjoy Hard to tell, since I've sold the GT nine months before I got the GR, and in comparison with the cars in between the GR is a revelation for sure. 🙂 I'd say the significant motor upgrade outweighs any potentially different steering feel by far.

How much did you pay in CHF if i may ask by ordering it directly from toyota? Because right now its more expensive here than the original price of 30k. I really want one as well and was hoping for a second hand soon but I’ll probably have to wait 1-2 more years for that.

@@judaiyuki159 In Switzerland, it was never the equivalent to 30k-33k USD. In Q1 2023, prices have been adjusted for inflation (1000 CHF up), so the actual price for a GR86 MT premium model is now around 42.5k CHF (depending on your choice of colour). I guess that makes a private cross-country import option not very attractive. Today, there are 15 new GR86's on the Swiss car market readily available (base and premium models combined). And you could order one, of course.

Well then i gotta hope that a few used once for close to 30k will be available soon. Would you in your opinion, as someone who owns it, still recommend getting it for the current price of 35-42k CHF? I read somewhere that they won’t sell the 86 from 24 onwards in Europe so I’m thinking the car might even be harder to get. I am thinking about selling my current car and covering the rest by finance. Also did you get the premium version? Sry for asking so many questions at once 😅.

Savagegeese guys are in far west suburbs of Chicagoland area, while EverydayDriver is based in Utah…..I’d say it’s highly unlikely that either one of them is up for a 2,000 mile road trip in winter for a “meetup”

Picking up one of these has been the best "big" purchase I've ever made. They're absolutely right about the driving dynamics being fun even not at the limit. While these certainly aren't rare cars, since they've been tough to get, it still feels special driving it every day, and anyone else driving one is always excited to chat if you pull up next to each other at a light. Do yourself a favor, if you're thinking about buying one of these, buy it!

@@zydomason Wow! I didn't realize they were so uncommon in Europe. When I say aren't rare, I mean here in my locale. They aren't a common sight, but are also something you can just go and order as long as you have the patience for the backlog that every dealer seems to have on them.

@@zydomason Depends on the dealer for the GR86. Some Toyota dealers do MSRP, some do 30%+ markup. If its a BRZ there are no markups. Subaru of America released a directive to its dealers to stop all markups around a year ago. They said it was out of line with their company ethos. A friend of mine was able to get a BRZ at MRSP just a few months ago with no trouble.

I live in a town where everyone drives a sportscar (mostly muscle cars) in summers and big ass trucks in winter. The number of thumbs ups I get driving the gr86 around in winter is amazing. I like the car significantly better in winter too. Slides on demand!

9:50 The low stress aspect is really what I love so much about my Mustang coming from Audi/VW. It is comforting to know that my local mechanic can handle anything I'm likely to need done to the car.

Do it! I actually sat in one of the first FR-S's when getting my wife a Highlander sometime in 2014. I had never seen one before. My son (age 12 or 13 at the time) was with me and I said, "This could be the perfect 'first car' once there are some used ones 3-4 years old in the marketplace". And, you guessed it, his first car was (and still is after 4 years) an FR-S (2015). He loves it, and so do I. We did a track weekend together at VIR soon after getting it, so he learned to drive it at the limit in bone-stock form. Over time, he has all but completely fixed the power/torque issue with headers, a tune, and flash, dropped it one inch while adding a set of good coil-overs and some nice, slightly wider wheels. That car is the PERFECT "86" for its model year, and I'd bet damn close to this new one! Anyhow, just my way of saying "Stick to your dream, Rob Moore, and anyone else in your shoes. You won't regret it!" And of course, you'll be getting the "perfected" model, so no need to spend a dime more than the car's price unless you want some nice wheels --- and maybe a couple stickers to help it go just a little faster than the others - lol. Cheers! Side note: I lucked into a low-mile S2000 about 5 years ago before prices started really shooting up. As much as I adore that car, I've been considering selling it and rolling the $ into a new-era GR86 - and that's based on my appreciation of the original one!

I just bought a 2024 GR86 with the "Premium" trim earlier today, in the color "Steel" and OF COURSE with three pedals! - I went in to put a down payment towards a GR Corolla and sign up for the wait list (estimated 2-3 year wait)...While waiting I ended up test driving an 86, and decided I had to go home in one. What a fantastic platform, I am so excited for this spring and summer!

Mine is my daily. You have to approach it with a right mindset - it is "cheap" sports car, so it will be loud inside, maybe panels will creek, and engine sometimes sounds like a tractor. But once you get it going, everything fades away.

Heartily agree with the attractiveness of driving a light RWD car in Winter conditions. My first car ever was an MGB which I daily drove through college. Then (much) later I bought a new 2001 Miata, and daily drove that in all 4 seasons for 17 years. Loved it all along, and with winter tires it handled snow fine. (Up until the snow was deep enough to drag on the underbelly. At a certain point ground clearance becomes an issue.)

Deep snow is likely one of the biggest Impediment. Depending where you are - that may only be an issue a few times a year. To date - I have yet to have any deep snow issues this winter with my Fiesta ST...

I can see ground clearance being an issue if you need to drive any country/rural roads, for sure. Fwiw though, I live in a Canadian city, we had one of our worst winters in history for snowfall last year, and I only got stuck in the Miata once in a residential area (which was, thankfully, easily resolved by a friendly passerby giving me a push). Haven't gotten into any trouble at all this winter. City roads get driven on/plowed enough to be a minor issue.

The ground clearance definitely becomes an issue if you frequently drive rural roads that rarely get plowed.

@@kevinandrew_ City roads don't aways get cleared that quick during a blizzard so you could see deeper snow.- especially back lanes!. But that's the beauty of a light car that gets stuck - it is way easier to get unstuck with 1 or 2 people pushing.

@@TerryManitoba A fellow Manitoban?! Yes that is completely true, my other post being oversimplification. It takes a bit of skill, throttle control, proper winter tires, patience, and just general winter driving experience to know which line to take/keep forward momentum in deep snow/don't park in a back lane if a storm is coming, etc to stay out of trouble with a sports car. I just find it funny when people look at me like I'm crazy, but really I have just as much ground clearance as anyone in a civic/camry/whatever generic sedan, of which there are tens of thousands of in the city. Just the extra step of needing to mitigate potential oversteer. It's more work for sure, but not impossible as some people make it out to be. (Also helps if you, like me, have another car to drive when it gets really, really bad lol, but again no issues this year)

Highly agree with everything said here. I daily my 370z year round. And its been absolutely phenomenal in the winter.. i run Nokian Hak 10's and there is no where i havent been able to get. Ski resort trips, deep snow dumps, its taken it all and been great

I daily'd my manual 09 S/T 370z for 5 years. Bought a Lexus GX a few months ago and am now turning the Z into a trackday/occasional street car. About to put it on Z1 R-Pro coilovers and their complete adjustable suspension kit + sway bars. Gonna be a good spring/summer!

Thank you for touching on what makes a sports car completely acceptable winter transportation: if you can feel and understand what the car is doing all the time, you don't need fancy AWD systems. Good snow tires, bag of sand in the trunk, and a careful right foot.

I bought one too in part from your recommendation 6 months ago. It is my only car and I am so glad I did. I find any excuse to go out somewhere. Going to the grocery store is something I get excited about. I definitely have the disease now. I'll miss seeing it on your videos, but it was a good run.

Hi Paul. If you had a 19 or newer miata rf, and fit well in it, and were willing to do tires, front sway bar and some moderate coilovers, would you still pick the brz over the rf if you didn’t need more room for a daily?

Own a 2014 BRZ from new here in Sydney. Few mods here and there to improve handling and feel otherwise stock power. Its still even on the OG set of wheels, tirers and brake pads. Love the thing to bits.Keeper for life.

Amen on driving a sports car in the winter - with good winter tires. I daily drive an ND1 Miata for 4 years, including through 4 northern Ohio winters. People thought I was crazy, but tires and the car’s balance (weight distribution) are everything when it comes to winter handling. I’m glad you guys have had such a good with with the GR86. I thought about buying one last year, but it just wasn’t the car for me. I still enjoyed all your videos on it though, so thanks for those!

You can fix the turn signal in the settings. Just switch one touch off and it works like a normal stalk

Have a 2022 WRX which has the same signal stalk actuation and had heard from many on KZbin about it…it’s nothing, a complete non-issue. Just touch it to get 3 blinks and hit it for a turn. If the turn is not deep enough to reset then touch it the other way and it cancels. I chose the poverty spec WRX so that I could have the horsepower and awd necessary to have WRC type fun in the ice, snow, and dust as well as track days and the like…all for the same price (or less) than the GR86/BRZ (it’s Canada, your pricing may differ elsewhere)…and I haven’t been disappointed. Glad to see you guys enjoying the car all year long.

Completely agree about the turn signal. I know, first world problems but there is/was no reason to switch away from the traditional European flick (activates the quick 2-3 second signal) to the full click (to keep the signal on).

Bought a silver 2016 BRZ Limited with 13,800 miles in October of last year. It's my daily driver in Minnesota and has been great. I don't have a garage, so it's parked outside every day. I did get one of those windshield and side mirror covers to keep those from freezing over or having excessive snow built up - that has been my best accessory purchase. I love driving this car and I look forward to keeping it for years. It's unmodded so far - I think I might get an equal-length header and have it tuned for 91 octane gas since we don't have 93 octane around here. I might get some wider wheels and tires, but that's probably well down the line if it happens at all. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great driving experience.

@@chrisx5127 I don't like convertibles in general. And I sure as hell wouldn't be able to fit comfortably in a Miata. But if you can, and really want one, go for it. It would definitely be fun/interesting in winter if you drive it year-round. The FA20D and FA24D engines in the BRZ have a 12.5:1 compression ratio and are meant to use 93 octane gas, but the manual says you can use 91 octane with no adverse effects.

Owned the 1st gen (I.e. 2013) “86”… and I miss it so much. Sure it wasn’t fast, but my g*d it was fun. The seats, handling, rear wheel drive etc all added up to an amazing daily driver without any of the costs of more expensive sports cars. I honestly did miss a little more power, but it really wasn’t the end of the world in 90% of situations.

I hear you guys about driving a sports car, or in my case muscle car, in the winter. Due to life changes, I put my 2004 GTO on the road year round for 10 years. With dedicated winter tires (yes, tires make ALL the difference), a couple sandbags in the trunk, and traction control off I could get around anywhere I needed to go. Granted, not as graceful as my previous 3000GT VR4, but still a hoot. Now at 216K miles, I got a different ride for winter so I can focus on rust cleanup from the years of salt abuse. But I completely understand the feeling of not belonging out there in winter with a fun RWD car. People are missing out on the fun!

I'm in the market and this GR86 is at the top of the list at the moment. Followed closely by a WRX STi. I had others on the list but I look at it from not just an enjoyable drive, but also a maintenance standpoint. I enjoy working on my cars and swapping a clutch in one of these is much easier to swap than any vehicle with FWD where you have to remove axles from the transaxle to reach the clutch. I'm not buying right away, but within the next year I'll likely know my purchase window. So far, the GR86 is leading the pack. This video definitely helps cement it into that position. I love shifting gears and unfortunately my 2017 Mazda 3 hatch isn't a manual primarily because finding a third pedal hatch during COVID wasn't so easy or affordable. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with the GR86. You've definitely provided me with useful feedback as to what to expect from the vehicle should I make that commitment.

I’ve owned a ‘13 BRZ, a ‘16 club Miata, a ‘20 WRX STI. I just traded the STI for the ‘23 GR86 and I have to say it is the best out of all these choices. At least for my purposes. I loved the STI and you wouldn’t go wrong with it, but it is a little more expensive than the GR86 and isn’t “quite” as fun to drive as the GR86 in my opinion. I mean, it was on rails and had great power, but the AWD was only really fun on the track in my opinion. The GR86 is fun ALL the time. Having four doors with the STI was quite useful I’ll admit though, but if you drive for fun and not just for transportation I would go with the GR86. If you need a little more utility and can handle the extra price, then maybe the STI is better for you.

I used to have a G35 Coupe and that thing put the fear of death in me driving it during the winter. I nearly wrecked it going 40mph in semi slick conditions and after that it became a 3 season car for me. Kudos to you guys for enjoying winter driving in a RWD sports car

I've had a 2014 Fiesta ST from new. I can't recall how many times I've told people that this is the most fun winter car I've "EVER" driven (a/w studded ice tires - of course-:) It is not a RWD car but the manual emergency brake helps with that. (not ideal but good fun NTL) I drive my 911 in summer... So I agree - a light - less expensive - powerful enough car makes for a great winter car. BTW - I get 24 mpg & I don't ever hold back. BTW2 - I've got a GR Corolla on order....

Had a 1st gen rx 7 as my daily through 3 Michigan winters. I'd describe the experience as a joyful challenge which is probably a big part of why I've never driven anything that wasn't a "driver's car". (2 rx 7's, Fiat Spyder, vw scirocco, Acura integra, Miata, etc. Currently considering a gr 86 (because my AWD Mazda 3 just feels boring by comparison). Took my first test drive just today, and am now totally smitten 🥰.

As a brand new owner of a '23 Toyota GR86 premium, i can vouch for this. You have to get behind the wheel of one to fully embrace it in all levels. Looks and feels 1,000% better in person which made the whole thing that much better to own. Do yourselves a favor and hunt one down and test drive the GR86. It's a fun, great handling, stylish coupe for the money. I'd compare it to a high octane go-kart, moves when you want it and looks good while doing so. Thanks for listening to my TED talk 😂

I drove a Genesis Coupe year-around for over ten years. It was fun in the snow and I often passed SUVs plodding along. For the record, I have lived in a number of heavy-snow regions so I am pretty skilled with winter driving. In 2020 I wanted one of the Toybaru twins and could not find a manual within a days drive for weeks / months. Eventually, I test drove a Veloster N. I know, it is driving the wrong wheels, but that car made me a convert. What fun!

Thanks for your videos comparing the Miata and GR86. Ended up going with the GR86 after having a Saturn Sky for a long time and thinking that the Miata was just an upgraded more expensive/modernized Sky. As a daily driver its really nice for practicality and did really well in winter in Albany with a set of winter tires on it.

Personally, bumping down to 16s with high performance snow tires, while softer was more to my taste for the winter part of the year. Maybe one year I'll try out oversized and try a bit more of a Porsche safari style setup for the winter, those look fun!

I like taller tires for clearing deep snow. If deep snow is not a common occurrence a high performance winter tire might be fun - but I wouldn't do it.

Man oh man I'm loving this glowing recap review and totally agree on everything, including that stupid turn signal. 😀 I have back issues, so I bought the BRZ for a slightly softer ride. This car is my favorite car OF ALL TIME and I've owned a bunch. I also love the thickness of the steering wheel, for me it's perfect, I can't stand those super thick steering wheels that feel like you're gripping a GD pool noodle.

I want one of these so bad, but the Toyota tax in Puerto Rico is between 35-40% which puts this over $42k down here, but despite that, I'm almost certainly going to take the plunge and set myself up for 72 monthly payments in another year or so. Light blue and only light blue! Light blue is less common than red. Subaru doesn't have light blue so red it is.

Being able to feel what’s under the car saved me from wrecking mine on ice(and the snow mode), I live in Alabama and just happened to be out getting dinner the one night the roads iced, if I was smarter I would’ve listened to the weather but nothing usually gets bad here other than tornadoes, I got my self stuck going up an iced hill on the way home, even though I was slipping and sliding sideways the car never slid backwards and the snow mode helped me ease the throttle to make an eventual slow climb up the hill, then made it home going about 20mph all the way😂

Daily drive my Mazda Miata ND RF in the winter. And with 50% of the weight on snow tires with a limited slip differential, it has plenty of traction to get going. And all cars have 4 wheel brakes.

as a 2023 brz 6mt red owner.... If you read the manual the turn signals work as they state in the manual. A slight bump gets you 2 seconds of turn signal for lane change and if you push it harder it stays on for 90 degree turns etc.... Its not that big of a deal that people make it out to be. The mpg so far for mine is 28ish going 75-80mph 90% highway....Im sure if you drive 60mph a long distance you will see above 30...Yes my numbers are hand calculated. Rtv who cares I have the 100k 7 year extended powertrain warranty If your on the fence about this car you just need to drive one and you will want it. For the price point its perfect. I cant fit in the miata and I didnt care to pay 40k+ for a used sports car with 20-50k miles already on it or 50k+ for a new car. Only subpar feature in stock form is the factory brake pads...they are not confidence inspiring for backroad/canyon/mountain driving....swap them out and your set. Recommended for all ages this car in 20 years will be equivalent to the honda s2000 in a loved chassis combo. If your about horsepower the aftermarket is coming on strong but that is not what this car is about.

I have an '11 Subaru Forester on all season radials and a '15 Subaru BRZ on season appropriate performance tires for Winter and Summer. I tell people that the BRZ is my Winter "Snowmobile" when it's on the Winter tires. I love this car!

I have a '19 WRX and live in Michigan. Tried to eek out the first winter with the summer tires (huge mistake) but bit the bullet and bought a set of the best Blizzaks Bridgestone makes on their own set of rims and just swap them out myself when the seasons change. It's phenomenal in the snow but I have to agree, my previous car was a '93 BMW 740i that was BETTER in the snow with a good set of Pirelli all-season tires than the WRX was with summer tires.

Ummming and aaahhhing ended on Saturday. I’ve been to the dealer twice in the past four months for a look and had a look at a few GR’s in dealer yards. Anyway, I took a BRZ for a test. After two kilometres of driving I pulled up at a set of lights and thought … this is so nice. Drove for another 20 minutes, retuned to he dealership and put down a deposit. Sharp and supple and just fun. Now … what colour? Such a positive review, thank for confirming my thoughts about these cars.

From 1974 through 1992 I drove MGs and Triumphs year round in Nebraska. Snow tires were a must. If the MG Midget got stuck, I'd pull out the choke, put it in first, and rock it pushing on the windshield pillar with the door open, then jump in. Try that in your SUV. 1500 lbs, 65hp=FUN
