I am 47 years old. One year fast forward, not only I have gained MORE muscle but I have also gained more weight ! ( Apart from starting OMAD I also started hitting the gym 6 times a week and been doing that religiously since last year ) I was 74 kg when I started ( 163 lbs) now I am 77 kg ( 169 lbs ) and I am 1.80 meters tall ( 6 feet tall ) . OMAD has been a life changing experience, every aspect of my life has improved dramatically , my sleep has improved significantly , my mood has been much more stable , I haven't been close to getting sick or feeling sick .. Now that I eat one meal a day I always do breakfast one day and a regular dinner the next day , but each meal regardless I am having breakfast or dinner type meal I always eat three kinds of seasonal fruits and two nuts ( almonds and walnuts ) with each meal.. As far as the portions are concerned , I am definitely eating more than one meal portion, 1.5 but not 2 for sure .. Both my husband and I started fasting years ago after discovering Dr. Fung. I am completely on board but I need refreshers from time to time when I am tempted by influencers who advocate high protein. I joined a gym last year to get help with weight training. However, I noticed that ALL the trainers and most of the participants were fat--and they stressed protein all the time. They counseled against IF of course. I quit that gym and do my weight training at home 3X a week. My daughter and 2 daughters-in-law fret over my fasting saying there is no way I am getting enough protein. Alas--all three are overweight! I am in great shape at age 76--130lbs at 5'8"--my doctor tells me I have even influenced her and wishes I could talk to her patients. I eat around 60-75 grams of protein per day with a snack meal at noon and dinner at 5 or so--between 16-20 hours of fasting every day. Thank you Dr. Fung.

I love meat but I don’t have to feel like I have to make my money budget or my calorie budget suffer to have to buy lots and lots of meat. And you’ll have more calorie budget left for fiber - yes, it’s important. Excess protein will only be wasted as any other excessive macronutrient, studies show*

Brilliant video Dr Fung putting to bed certain myths surrounding Protein, promulgated by longevity experts responding to this or that new medical paper or research.. I'm a 55 year old male, that resumed a routine of fasting regularly immediate upon being diagnosed with prediabetes. I followed a stringent self imposed regime doing consecutive 72 hour fasts commencing at the beginning of each week for a period of 12 weeks. I'm metabolically flexible, so was soon able to adapt to the strain of fasting. I exercised daily, regularly performing both cardio and some strength training focusing on body weight calisthenics and simple dumb bells exercises at home. Without consuming protein powders or any advertised body building supplementation. Eating modest amounts of protein and sticking mainly to my regular diet that consisted of eating 3 to 4 eggs and one to two tins of sardines everyday. I believe, empirically, I have put on muscle losing body fat around my belly, reducing my waist size from 43 inches to 34 inch in circumference now.

I drank just juice all day long for nearly a year and lost the weight without exercise. I juiced daily at least 10 pounds of carrots, 6 apples, pears, celery, anything I could get in the juicer and avoided all other food intake. Who knows how much sugar I was consuming maybe 6 times a day juicing. It worked. I lost the weight effortlessly. I was bored to tears with juice, after losing the weight I went on Atkin's and been on it ever since, eating 6 low carb meals/snacks a day and have kept the weight off.

Guys, please understand the characteristics of Dr. Fung's patients. I remember Peter Attia once asked Dr. Fung about muscle loss during fasting on his podcast. Dr. Fung's response was very pragmatic: my patients are not bodybuilders; my patients are elderly, obese, and have kidney problems. And he did not observe muscle loss in his patients during fasting. I am currently also pursuing a lean body. I am targeting a daily intake of 100 grams of protein with a meal sequence of high fiber, high protein, and low carb. I also do resistance training and walk for 30 minutes every day. If I don't practice OMAD (One Meal A Day) with discipline, my weight, waist circumference, body fat, and visceral fat will continue to increase. So in my opinion, the advice of moderate protein intake is suitable for most people. For those aiming for muscle gain, consume high protein but practice disciplined cutting with fasting.

Exactly. When I was in my early thirties, I was lifting weights several hours a week, but I was getting pretty modest gains. I was telling one of the trainers at the gym that one day, and she asked, "Well maybe you need to change your supplement." I was like, ""What supplement? I don't take any supplements." She hooked me up with a pretty simple protein supplement, and I was shocked at how quickly I started putting on a lot more muscle. Yeah, a regular person may not want or need protein supplements, but if you want to get the most out of weight lifting, I think you do.

Focus on achieving the health biomarkers you aim for, such as waist circumference, HbA1C, fasting insulin, blood pressure, SGPT/ALT, uric acid, triglycerides, and HDL. Achieve this through fasting combined with a high-fiber, moderate-protein, low-carb, and low-deep-fry diet. Exercise for 30 minutes daily; walking is the easiest exercise for everyone. Consuming 100 grams of protein per day, equivalent to 14 eggs, is not an enjoyable process, and achieving your health biomarker targets will be challenging with a high-protein diet. Once your health biomarker targets are achieved, switch to a high-protein diet with resistance training.

Not even necessary. I read a study a couple of weeks ago where they found exercises in a fasted state or with protein didn't yield any significant difference. I work out in a fasted state (20-24 hours) and I'm quite shredded, and that's with a combination of cardio and calisthenics. 100 grams of protein daily is like 4 burgers a day

@@brainchamber99 It is carbohydrates that makes the difference in performance during resistance training, not protein.

Thank you so much I’ve been praying for answers as I previously believed Dr Ken Berry who says carnivore diet is good and to eat protein until your STUFFED ! That did not work for me and I felt horrible . I do best on lower fat high fiber lower protein and I lift weights for muscle !

It's interesting, some people do well on carnivore, some do well on ketogenic/ Atkins and some do well as vegetarian. The common thread with all of these approaches is whole foods and elimination of most processed foods. Just my observation.

Muscle is no doubt important to us as we get older. The more important question is that how we maintain and optimize our metabolic flexibility (& muscle) individually. With or without fasting, ones need to see what work best for you.
