What is the Best Fast Length? (Fasting Basics 3) | Jason Fung

Jason Fung

Күн бұрын

Dr Jason Fung discusses the best fast lengths for you, including 16;8, Time Restricted Eating, 24 hour fasts, One Meal a Day (OMAD), 5:2 diet, extended fasting and more. Shorter fasts are best done more often, but longer fasts (extended fasting) are more powerful. The best fast is the one that fits into your lifestyle. Fit your fasting into your lifestyle, don't fit your lifestyle into fasting. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

I did a 93 hour fast because omad stopped working for me. Because I have low thyroid and very slow metabolism. I was getting so hungry and bad cravings because my body couldn't access the nutrients it needed. My body felt so heavy and movement was becoming very difficult. I had enough and went straight into it. On the second day i felt so much better and i was almost scared of re-feeding at the end. I felt the omad working the next day. Could you please give more information on re-feeding after a long fast?

@@trueblue1359 even though your carbs are "clean" carbs, your body very much so reacts to the sugars in them the same way. Especially potatoes and rice which are prone to creating an insulin spike. Insulin spikes make you want more carbs when you come crashing down. This why a clean keto (look up mediterranean keto) is probably the best diet to combine with fasting. Eat clean fats, keep your carbs really low, and you'll notice it is much easier to fast.

You changed my life, Dr. Fung. Seriously. I'm 63 and was morbidly obese for 40 years. I "happened across" your videos over 2 1/2 years ago when my daughter in law scared me to death saying they were fasting as a part of becoming more healthy. I really connected with your message and saw where I was headed. No doubt I would be type 2 diabetic before long. That scared me me further and I jumped aboard and unlike the decades of yo yo dieting I had experienced, I've changed my way of eating and I'm never turning back. I'm down 105 pounds and am only 30 pounds from a very healthy weight. I say all that to say this...thank you! Seriously, I can't express it sufficiently. Thank you.

Especially when other people around you are like “yo im gonna ubereats some wendys, get some spicy chicken sandwich” nd then in the back of your head you’re like “damn... What I'm learning is that if I want my body to run the most efficiently, I must treat my body as a business. If I run my business with 3 shifts then I'll have to pay for overtime and double time, increased workers comp claims, sick days, more electricity and gas to keep the building running, etc. All costs increase. However if I can get workers to work a 6 hour day, then they'll have increased energy while I have decreased costs and overhead. Same with eating. The body will run more efficiently if it doesnt have to spend all it's time digesting food. Itll be more happy and productive to do other things like repair cells and burn fat.
@tumblebugspace
@tumblebugspace 3 жыл бұрын
It’s rather unfortunate that you view your body as a “business,” because that is *precisely* what’s been made of it by the “food” manufacturers, which has gotten us where we are today. The model I prefer is to eat closer to the way our ancestors did, whole and unprocessed, instead of stuffing ourselves with packaged, preserved, and adulterated substances that have been rendered devoid of nutrients and *real* food value. It helps me to visualize my viscera and *consciously* ask them what they need and want. Carbohydrates full of antinutrients are never what I “hear” back from them! Of course, your business analogy is probably more suited to the rapacious capitalism we live under in Western civilization. Whatever floats your boat! Just offering an alternative to that.

Hello Dr. Fung. I had a stroke 2 1/2 yes ago. When I was at the Rehabilitation hospital, the Nutritionist told me about Intermittent Fasting, but did not go in to details about how to do it. Just told me the different schedules. Have been doing IF since then. Unfortunately, I did not change my diet. I came across your channel 2 weeks ago and on March 20,2022 did a 16/8 properly eating 2 times. This week I changed it to 18/6 and today I am completing a 24 hr fast I feel great

Like honestly why would FDA approve of bad foods and then you hear within the same US government , when, CDC, blaming you for being fat and not even sharing the wonders of prolonged fasting. Even doctors nowadays don’t talk about this! At best they will say you can do 18:6 or 24 hours but don’t do more than 2 days. But it’s like after 2 days, is when you really start making waves! Lol😊

Recently I was told by my doctor that I needed to go on medication for my type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. Both were very bad, so I decided to change my diet and lifestyle. I do not like taking pills, so I told her I would try and control them by dieting and exercising. I told her to give me one month, and if it hadn't worked I would go on the pills. Three weeks later, I went back to see her; she took my blood and cholesterol test and told me to come back ‪in one week‬. When I went back for the results, I was shocked - the doctor looked at me and said, "Mr K..., I don’t know what you are doing, but whatever it is, continue to do it - we can't see any signs that you’re diabetic and your cholesterol is normal! We don’t need to put you on any medication." To my surprise, she didn’t even ask me what I was doing...

My last meal was sunday night from 6-7 pm, and we are now thursday and i am still going on... Lost 3 pounds to date from the time i weighed o Tuesday morning, to this morning. @@lax731 that's why I think 2mad in a 6 hr window works better than omad. Omad is too difficult to get all ur requirements in a comfortable meal. And be strategic w ur nutrition, don't just eat whatever. For me, I always have eggs or tuna for protein, then I build around that w a salad, tomato for vit c and peppers, garlic, onion, kale, lettuce. Take a whole real food based multivitamin and omega 3s, minerals, extra vitamin d probably a good idea. Weight loss will happen if u religiously follow intermittent fasting for 3 to 6 months. Especially if u bring in keto foods. Omad isnt necessary and I think it leaves u open to nutritional deficiencies. I do 2mad keto Monday to Friday w my supplements. Saturday and Sunday I open it up to paleo. I then do 3 to 5 day water only fasts 4 to 5 times a year, w an option on 10 days for one of them.

I did a little study for 2 days once. I didn't take ANY meds and just ate 1 meal (salad with other veggies and a protien) and drink a good amount of water(not tap water) throughout the day and my blood sugars were in the 60's. I want to add my experience with extended fasting in terms of mental health. I do TRE, and don't fast more than 24 hours because I have found that when I do extended fasting, I often slip into hypomania, which is something that doesn't seem to happen outside of extended fasting. I feel great with 24 hours or less, but beyond that I start to get hypomanic. So, keep your mental health in mind as well as your physical health! Has anyone else had that experience as well? EDIT: I did some research and did find that this can be a common occurrence for people who have mental health issues such as bipolar disorder. I still think fasting is a great resource, but always keep your mental health in mind AND do what works for you! It's not a competition. Just because you see someone can fast for 7 days straight doesn't mean it works for you.

That’s so true on the living alone. I’m finding it’s hard to stay on the longer fasting times because I’m on disability with a very bad back and bad sacroiliac joints, left one fused as is my lower back, if I don’t have things to do or in bed due to the pain then I’m constantly thinking of food out of boredom, I’ve got to start doing puzzles or something to keep my mind busy… I stay up really late and then only wake up around 9:00-9:30 so that helps plus I drink coffee right away then I’m good until about 2:00-3:00😋😋 So I gotta get back into my mind set again thank you for sharing your experience

@@_Cynderella A ketogenic diet changes your metabolism from living off sugar (carbs) to living off fat (ketones.) I lost 70 lbs in a year at age 67 by eating a ketogenic diet and fasting. I always ate until I was comfortably full or even stuffed. I highly recommend you read Dr. Fung's "The Obesity Code." It will amaze you how many things we accept as common knowledge just aren't so. If your goal is to lose weight, I would suggest you try slightly longer fasts, like 72-96 hours. You'll find that most of the discomfort of fasting happens in the first 36 hours and after that it's really easy to keep going, and that you get steady 1-2 pound weight loss every extra day of fasting.

We love fasting. My husband and I have been strict keto/low carb for 4 years and OMAD for over one year. The problem with us is that we are really skinny - we do have some belly fat - not much but still there - we don’t worry about it. We are both in our 60’s and started keto/low carb not for weight loss but for the health benefits that it brings. We monitor a few times a week and we are always in ketosis. Autophagy we get from prolonged fasting has helped us to overcome knee pains amongst other things. I just wished we could do it more often. I am 103 pounds right now after a 36 hour fast. It often takes a month and a bit to bring my weight back to 105/107 and when it’s stable I will usually do another 36 hour fast. I would encourage anyone to do 24 hour intermittent fasting then go to 36 then 72 hours fast. I can easily go longer than 72 hours but the weight loss is way too much for me. I must say I am small bone and except for gaining lots of weight while pregnant I was never a big person. The main concerns for me is that Alzheimer’s (maternal side ) and heart problems (paternal side) are the two “big” major diseases in my family and the motivators for doing low carb. Best of luck to anyone starting on this journey. Find your motivator. Keto/low carb will change your life! ❤️🌹

I began looking into this Calorie Ingesting Regime recently for the opposite reason most others do. I have a Very physically demanding warehouse job and weigh a measly 120 but would like to increase that to ~ 140 or so. I usually eat 2 meals/day, but despite eating with enthusiasm but rarely keeping precise track of my caloric magic number, I haven't gained enough to keep a bird alive during the last year! I'm sure I exceed 3000 calories on some days. We are frequently offered free lunch @ the job site and I haven't said No even Once! I plan on changing my strategy by committing to "spiking" my insulin level with a 3rd meal just ~ 6 hours after what has been the start of the 18 hour fast. 18 hours apparently is way too long for Any insulin to remain in my zip code. I may set my alarm for rooster time and drink a quart of milk/day just for good measure. Wish me luck!

I began eating low carb in June 2020 and combined it with 18:6 fasting. Ten months later, I've lost 90 pounds and I'm amazed at the results. I've settled on two meals per day, but I did use OMAD twice - when I got stuck at a certain weight. I only did OMAD for one day and it was enough to jolt me into another period of weight loss. It's incredible to think that I consume cream, butter and other high quality fats, yet I've almost got a six-pack lol. I also have 'cuts' in my muscles - but I've lost no muscle mass. My favorite fast length is nine or ten days. I like to start a fast on Friday after early dinner and resume eating Sunday evening the following weekend or noonish on Monday. This allows me to avoid work stresses when starting my fast and get walks in the sun, and then get another weekend of light exercise in toward the end of my fast. I can usually best tolerate fasting during work if I'm already fasted when the work week begins. Additionally, by the time we reach 7 days, the benefits of fasting are thought to have reached the maximum, so all things considered, this seems optimal. I have done 22 days before, but I find I begin "missing food" if I go much longer than a week. Another useful fast for me is Friday night to Sunday night or Monday morning, for similar reasons. Sometimes I fast just a day or two, often 36 hours. The easiest daily pattern for me is 16/8 or 18/4, but some think it's not a good idea to do that every day, and I don't. I do that two or three times a week, usually on resistance training days, but always try to keep the eating period under 12 hours. I don't seem to meaningfully lose weight unless I fast over 24 hours, and doing a fast of a week or so helps me break through a weight plateau. I hadn't fasted much longer than 72 hours in a couple years, so I decided to do a longer fast last weekend, and I'm coming up on seven days. It's been a good fast, and I plan to end it at around nine or ten days because it's been so long since I did one. I plan to do another extended fast at the end of summer. It's easier to do an extended fast when the weather is warm, so I'll probably wait until at least spring. PS: I lost over 100 pounds with quarterly extended fasting and eating low-carb between fasts.

I went from 155lbs to 144.2lbs. I did moderate exercise for an hour as much as my body would handle. TRUTH- this time I felt out of it till Friday. I did OMAD, 3 to 5 day fasts here and there, cut out grains and pasta, kept a good calorie deficit and walked 3 miles a day for 8 months. Lost 130 pounds, averaging 4.6 pounds a week. By the end, my body was so tuned to it, I could guess my weight 2 weeks out forecast when it was time to go by a smaller pair of jeans.

During your 3-5 day fasting, were you still walking or light exercising?
@Runner2000
@Runner2000 Жыл бұрын
@@ridgewayjulakit1612 3 days, yes. Anything longer, no. Honestly, I did. 5 Day and a 6 Day Fast just to see how it would work I wouldn’t do them again. It can be dangerous, but a 3-dayer is fine, although you should consult your doctor about it first then practice “Crawl, Walk, Run.” Fast for a day just to get your body used to it. Then work your way up to 3. And listen to your body. If you get light-headed, stop. If your heart races, stop.

Dear Dr. Jason I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your guidance. Since February 1st, 2021, I've been diligently practicing the one-meal-a-day intermittent fasting method that you suggested. Previously, I weighed 170 pounds at a height of 5 feet 5 inches, and in 2007, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. At that time, my treatment included Metformin 1000 and another medication (the name of which escapes me, 10 mg) taken twice a day. My A1C levels fluctuated between 8.1 and 10. Remarkably, after adopting the intermittent fasting strategy, which involved fasting for 20 to 28 hours, I lost about 42 pounds in six months, bringing my weight down to 128 pounds. Impressively, my A1C level improved to 5.4, and I've been off medication since February 1st, 2021. I am incredibly thankful for your help. Currently, I continue to practice intermittent fasting, now within a 16 to 20-hour window, and my A1C level is at 6.1. Your advice has been life-changing, and I am deeply grateful for your support. Warm regards, Alem Brhanemeskel

I'm 63. I do not remember eating "snacks" as a child, but I do remember eating home cooked meals as a family. Mom was an excellent cook too. We were too poor to go to McDonald's so it was a rare treat. When I was in high school, I would skip lunch and hoard my lunch money. When I was working my early jobs in my 20's, I would buy chips and diet soda for lunch. (I know, not healthy). Those days I was very thin and probably because I wasn't eating all the time. I didn't KNOW that was fasting. Now, I'm trying to replicate that so I can lose weight. I lost 10lb the first month. Only 90 more to go.

Year 2020 I did a lot of experimenting with fasting to lose my weight. By far my favorite pattern was: Sunday - Cheat Day Monday&Tuesday - Vitamins / Black coffee / electrolytes Wednesday - Cheat Day Thursday&Friday - Vitamins / Black coffee / electrolytes Saturday - Cheat Day Now that sounds horrid, but the secret to calling them cheat days was simply to not beat myself up if I made a bad decision on food I ate. And the magic behind that was that at some point when I hadn't eaten for two whole days, my body started craving healthier foods I never craved before like fruits and vegetables (And for some strange reason, Peanut Butter). So those "Cheat Days" turned out to be me splurging on fruit for lunch, extra vegetables for dinner, and apples & (lots of) peanut butter for desert as opposed to Oreos & milk and the whatnot. It was a crazy weird phenomenon that absolutely corrected my eating habits and now here in 2021 I'm over 1 year without any fast food, 80 lbs lighter and preferring healthy foods (typically) over anything unhealthy. Actually, most all any junk food I do eat is simply so that it doesn't go to waste lol but even then I can only eat so much now before I feel like garbage.

@@hannaheling2200 I'm not on that same plan right now. That was mostly to lose the majority of the excess body fat and I stand by it as my favorite eating plan ever. But now I'm focusing on building muscle and it's been going extremely well. I cap out at about 1700-2000 cal a day (usually in a for hour window) and let all of the fat burn come in gradually from fasting windows and the nearly daily running/weight lifting. Basically I shifted (as originally planned over a year ago) from extreme fat burn focus w/ some muscle stimulation, to a muscle building focus w/ some fat burn. If you're hoping for me to tell you this was some sustainable lifetime fasting schedule, it's not. It was designed to be a healthy way to shred excess fat while building better habits and discipline until I reach a good body fat level to eat more regular. Plus, as an engineering student currently having to be self taught in differential equations and two physics courses under COVID while working 25-30 hours a week, food really does help curb the anxiety during exam stretches, so I can't hold that fast 100% of the time for reasons like that. But to this day, I'm still losing weight and my eating is still very good. We had a meeting at work the other day loaded to the brim with junk food and I was just being a rebel eating just fruit w/peanut butter, protein bars and green tea, lol. So I would like to say that fasting plan was a monumental success for me personally.
