I eliminated or nearly eliminated soda, sugar, chips, wheat flour and “vegetable” oil from my diet. I also follow your advice on intermittent fasting. I am no longer pre-diabetic, my arthritis stopped (unless I eat foods listed), no longer have acid reflux, gone from 2 or 3 migraines a month to 1 every other month, and dropped 33 Kg in 17 months. The journey has been well worth whatever transient emotional stress I may have experienced. I really appreciate your easy to understand advice and guidance.

Dr. Fung I owe you my life! On 9/30/2021 I was diagnosed with diabetes and told it effected my kidneys a little! My A1C was 7.6 and my weight was 252! I went home and cried my eyes out! The next day I started fasting 18:6 and I cut my carbs in half , I started to drink only water and exercise for 1 hour a day 6 days of week! Because of those changes when I went to the doctor this past Friday my weight was 233 and my A1C was 5.2 my doctor said she has never had a patient drop there A1C in less than 2months! Thank you Dr. Fung❤❤❤

How have your menstrual cycles been since fasting and cutting carbs? While it's stopped my acne and cleaned my skin up and actually made me look a little younger, my periods have been negatively impacted :( they have become lighter and closer together and its made me fear I'll stop getting them altogether:(

10 years ago on Thanksgiving, no less, I had cardiac arrest. I was overweight, pre diabetic, and although all the tests done to find the cause of the cardiac arrest, the doctor's couldn't determine the cause for it and told me how lucky I was to have survived. It really woke me up to my health, but it has definitely been a struggle over the years. I ate emotionally, I ate out of boredom, I didn't have a strong support system, so I constantly relapsed to eating unhealthy. The "diet" fads and "influencers" are all garbage. There's no "hacks" or get skinny in 2 weeks, that's all BS. Even through all of that I was still able to get my weight down from 306lbs down to 200 lbs, but I still struggled with body image issues, and fat around my mid section. After all that I finally found Jason Fung a actual doctor and he made it so much easier to understand how my body uses food. Thank you for being honest and making it so simple. Finally, after years of struggling I started intermittent fasting and a low carb vegan diet after about a month I'm finally losing that belly fat and it just keeps pushing me to keep going and that's all the support I need to finally reaching my goal! Thanks again!

This was a really great one Dr Fung. Most people fail more for these reasons than not knowing what or how to eat. Most people have no idea why they can’t actually stick with it. These are the key issues! As an observation - I found intermittent fasting made all these other aspects a bit easier because it gives me structure, reduces cravings, helps with sleep, helps with impulsive eating - so many things.

snacking habits r so tough to break.. what ive been doing is to never buy them at a grocery store. when i start to crave chips or cakes i pick a convenience store that's 1-2 miles walking distance away. that 2-4 mile walk round trip will help you or prevent you from gettin those snacks. another tip is to only bring 5$. that way you limit how much snacks you'll end up with altogether ( bag of chips, a drink, cookie)

U R exactly right.. i have knows what i need to do for over a yr but i just can't stick to it - after 1-2 days i just go back to eating something not good. I used to be much stronger when i was younger but now i just take it like just enjoy life, don't make it so serious. But then again the weight has made me less confident, less social more introvert and also unhealthy of course which reduces my lifespan so i really need to get serious. My problem is due to my long work shifts i always used to eat late around 9-10pm and would always just grab something from outside since i didn't want to cook that late. Now for over 2yrs i work from home but still haven't been able to change my routine - unreal. Neways saw ur video and i understand - its not just about knowing - have to have a system around u that will help u get into that mode where u reduce carbs to a min and then also maybe those cravings will stop. My goal is to get little better by the end of this year so next yr i can be strict and planning on 2022 to be a stellar yr.

I just turned 60 in July and I've always been a dancer, growing up the daughter of a dance teacher and becoming a dance teacher myself. But I was probably 50 lb overweight in my teens due to some emotional trauma in my childhood, yet despite that I was still very involved in dance. When I became an adult I did a couple crazy diets that I just made up myself, no cheese no bread kind of thing. One was zero fat, and that actually worked crazily enough. Over the years I've gone up and down and no one ever thought I was overweight except for me. This last 4 years I went through some stress at my dance studio and started eating more sugar which I had cut out. By March of this year (2021) I think I must have weighed about 155...? I didn't even really want to know. I'm 5 ft 8 and 1/2 in tall. But starting on March 30th, I just was MENTALLY READY to get rid of the weight. I tripped over Dr fung's videos. I have lost about 33 lbs so I weigh 122 to 124 lb for the last three or four + months. I feel great! I haven't been this since I was age 13 I'm guessing but I feel normal for the first time in my adult life really. But all my point about that is to say FOR ME, that it's not about the support and all of what he's saying in this video. It's always been about GETTING TO THE CORRECT PLACE IN MY HEAD to care how I look and feel more than the reward of how something tastes if that makes any sense. I wish I could bottle and sell that PLACE to get to mentally because I think that is a HUGE thing for many women. And I never really done many diets in my life (except when I was 18 or whatever that was). I did do ONE diet in 2013 and that was the Dr Oz diet which was chicken turkey or fish / brown rice and a half a cup of Greek yogurt/all the low glycemic index vegetables you want and it worked and I kept it off & even has a cheeseburger or pizza now and then. But this time that did not work. And after watching Dr Fung, I realized I could eat cheese and macadamia nuts and burgers and eggs and I could even have dark chocolate, which I do daily! 78% Lindt dark chocolate AND I can even have Chardonnay! So I'm pretty much doing omad; some days it's not convenient if I'm doing things with friends and then I just modify and it all works. I have had 2 occasions where I had a caramel apple, one teeny piece of cheesecake & one caramel, but that's been only four individual, separate times in 7+ months. I don't crave anything because I'm having chocolate everyday lol.

I really liked the section on excess eating during Covid lockdown as other avenues for entertainment were restricted . I really feel that one reason that low income people are disproportionately obese is because food is a relatively cheap form of entertainment . This is compounded by the fact that cheap foodstuffs often promote obesity .

Also on limited income it’s very expensive to eat healthy it’s cheaper to buy the combo meals . Cauliflower for 6 dollars verses burger and fries and drink for 6 dollars ? It’s tough times out there for many, it’s depressing for many. Be kind! I intermittently fast to budget and feel better! As a senior with limited income , COVD, it’s been difficult. Walking helps thankfully. Many cannot!

@@lidiaspyrka8096 Thanks for your comment . Despite us having a welfare state here.in the UK there are still a lot of people who live in poverty . People who live on low incomes and who are obese are told to cook fresh food . In their ignorance they don't understand that many poor people can't even afford the fuel to cook food - and fuel costs have just got considerably more expensive . Something like 100, 000 British kids live in temporary accommodation where they won't even have access to cooking facilities . Many of these people will live on 2 pizzas for the price of one , and who can blame them . The information DR Fung has provided particularly about IF has helped me enormously with weight and health issues . There is a strange assymetry in all this . Here in the west we have to resort to fasting to deal with weight issues and yet worldwide still about 9 million people die from starvation annually ! Anyway I send you all best wishes regarding your own health and circumstances 🕊️

It's about being informed, deciding what you want and where you want to be in your life, bur most importantly being single minded so you cut out ALL that does not help you achieve this. Snacking, eat the wrong foods, being lazy are all either distractions or examples of negative behaviours. If you want it that bad you will do it.

Dr Fung, I lost 45 lbs and reached my ideal low weight in 2017 a lot of changes in life life later I gained back 60lbs by 2021. Diagnosed with insulin resistance and a possible thyroid autoimmune problem. I have lost and gained so many lbs over the years and each time I lose 10 lbs I gain back 20lbs. It takes 6 months to lose and literally 2 weeks to gain back double. Thats how I ended up 60 lbs over. Unbelievable but true. Its a life long struggle. In the last year I lost 20lbs and ended up gaining back 30 lbs after a foot injury and particularly bad hypothyroid episode. My antibodies are high but doctors wont medicate because my TSH appears to be "normal=3.5-5.5". They kind of wanna wait till it gets to 10. I learnt in my research that insulin resitance can also stem from an underactive thyroid. Could you please confirm or research it?

Mike I agree with you. Dr. Fong definitely did save my life from a mini stroke which could’ve been a full brown blown stroke due to my past eating habit. My blood pressure was 208 and I didn’t know how to speak for a period of five minutes then I regained my self. My son in law Stephen Hopkins MD in Sonora at Motherlode vein institute now acknowledges Dr. FUNG on his website. My son-in-law is a general surgeon and deals with many people who have had diabetes and have had to illuminate toes legs etc. due to poor knowledge. He works at various hospitals in wound care and explains to people to check out Dr. FUNG to save them and teach them what is really going to save them and save them from more wounds and amputations. If Dr. FUNG only knew

I'm no scientist but intuition tells me you're spot on. It just makes sense to give our bodies a break, and it certainly won't kill us. Otherwise what is the point of our body's ability to store fat in the first place? The biggest issue for me is the social pressure. I'm not obese, but I am about 30 pounds overweight (down 10 pounds in 2 weeks thanks to a single low carb meal once a day!) When I go on my fasting kicks, friends and family look at me with absolute disgust and worry. "Your body needs nutrients!" " We already fast, that's why they call it break FAST" "That's not healthy for you". Or I get the straight up eyerolls and the "you look fine", like I'm ONLY 30 pounds overweight and shouldn't worry about it. A lot of contempt overall. There's a whole lot of talk about "fat shaming" but very little about the hate you'll get for trying to get healthy, like "look at that non-obese person eating a salad, ugh, who does she think she is??" 😑 And yes, I'm in the U.S. 😂 well I want to FEEL healthy and not just look it, so anyway thanks for your videos, very informational and reading through the comments attached is always inspirational. Thanks all! 😊

I know someone who is very overweight but they don't think they are snacking when they are drinking fruit juice and tea with milk throughout the day. They don't see the sugary drinks as food and they think because fruit juice is fruit it must be healthy but It's clearly not doing them any good at all.

After more than a year of following your vids, blog, and email campaigns, it has finally dawned on me: *Fasting is a skill that must be learned through repetition.* Maybe you tried to say that when discussing ghrelin, but it was not clear until I reached this point in my journey. Currently on Day 5. As you said, it gets easier after a few days. At this point, it seems easier to continue to fast rather than eating. (On a side note, I feel noticeably more peppy today. Like a spring in my step sort of thing. Napoleon Hill wrote about something similar 80 years ago in "Think and Grow Rich". It was just a passing comment, but he said that, when he felt sluggish, he would skip eating for a while (time not mentioned). This is consistent with your discussions of fueling the brain on ketones. )

Right! even had to get up to change the channel on TV, and washing clothes was more active in the 70s too (we were still using a wringer after washing back then). There were more smaller community stores, so we could walk to the local "corner" store for a few things instead of having to drive to the super center. Even typing was harder then than now on a keyboard And it's not just more movement, there was also more practice at delayed gratification. The only time we could watch our favourite TV show was when it was airing (no on-demand TV) or when the movie was playing in our local cinema (no VCR or DVD), had to wait longer for a cake to bake (no microwave).

My opinion on making fasting easier. Eat foods you enjoy. It's much easier to not eat when you know that you will enjoy the food when you are able to. It's less torture on yourself. I have been eating all of the food that I enjoy. I'm only eating one meal a day though and so far have lost 32 lbs.
