My A1C was 6.0 and my doctor said I had to take metformin. I inquired about the side effects. He replied, "Well, they all have side effects." (He didn't know.). I asked if I could wait three months. He said, "No, you are losing your pancreas cells and you don't get them back." My cousin who works for another doctor said they do not prescribe medicine for an A1C of 6.0 but recommend diet and exercise first so I chose not to take the metformin. Instead, I cut out all cakes, pies, cookies, candy, etc and lifted weights, did cardio, and hiked frequently. I returned in three months weighing twenty pounds less and my A1C had dropped to 5.6. The doctor was surprised yet took offense that I did not take the metformin, "a highly effective drug." I told him I wasn't questioning the effectiveness of the drug but whether every doctor prescribes metformin with an A1C of 6.0." In the end, he asked if he could go hiking with me. But I chose to drop him as my personal care doctor.

I’m a Type 1 diabetic and here are a few simple tips: 1. Intermittent fast. I’ve been doing it for 8 years and it has 100% changes my health. STOP eating all the time. 2. Eat real food. Stop with the gimmicks. Protein like beef, chicken, lots of eggs, quality fats from grassfed butter, olive oil and avocado oil, low glycemic fruit like avocados, green apples, and berries. Simple. 3. Walk after eating. Even it’s a 10 minute walk it makes a difference. 4. Quality sleep. Put your phone away. If you have a doctor who doesn’t try everything before prescribing a pill you need to find a new doctor. You are in charge of your health not your MD.

Great info, Dr. Axe! Jumping on here to say that I was surprised to have a slightly elevated A1C at 5.7 (the lowest number for pre-diabetes) at 5’6” and 113lbs. While weight was not a factor for me (and I don’t do a ton of sugar, either!) I attributed it to long years of unmanaged stress, severe hormone imbalance (free testosterone under 3ngl), poor sleep, and more importantly, lack of exercise. I am getting on the path to bringing better rhythms into my life, and found this video to be helpful. Any pre-diabetic diet advice for people who are on the brink of underweight?

When I went to my doctor, he said everything looked OK so I’m trying to start my walking up again. My breakfast consists of just three boiled eggs and a cup of green tea. However, around 10 a.m I would start feeling light headed, shortness of breath and tingling on my hands and feet. This would get worse which would force me to have my lunch, which consists mainly of rice and veggies. After lunch the symptoms would subside and i would be back to normal. Why is this happening? Is it hypoglycemia? Are three eggs at breakfast not enough to sustain me for a later lunch? And since this is the case im afraid to go for longer fasts even if i want to.

My A1C went from 9.3 to 5.8 naturally but it’s probably in the 6’s again at least because I slacked off in the winter. I pray it’s not above the 6’s. I got away from sweets in the spring and summer (had a horrible summer for other reasons) but I don’t even like the taste of sweets anymore. They just taste too sweet but carbs are an issue. I get hypoglycaemic. I’m on a prebiotic drink that has chromium in it and also on inositol but that’s it for blood sugar. I’m on quite a few supplements for other things. I’m on medications for other things. I was put on Benzodiazepines at age 16 and I’m 44 now and trying to come off them. They ruin GABA receptors but they can heal. A doctor at the time put me on them when I had my first panic attack. It’s such a long story but now I know how much worse they made me. Then I ended up on antidepressants and then everything another psyche med that drove my weight, blood sugar etc. I had a psychiatrist for years by the time I was 29 that told me I had to stay on even the Benzodiazepines forever. They’re physically addictive, ruin our GABA receptors and will quit us and cause physical dependency. Benzo use on a regular basis will screw up your body and it’s inevitable. DISCLAIMER: I’m not a doctor and never quit them cold turkey. Talk to your doctor about coming off safely and if they say no. Find a professional someone who will help you. Most doctors are saying now, to be on them no more than 3 weeks. Occasionally being used in hospital for emergency or extreme short term may be fine. I’m getting side tracked. I had insomnia for months but when I cut my antidepressant in half it was better. They can cause mania. Once again, I’m not a doctor. I guess the question I want to ask is how do I eat healthy when my husband doesn’t? I am doing better but I feel resentment for his lack of interest in eating healthy. Please pray for us. I’m on a Beta blocker too. I was put on it in hospital last year when I had serotonin syndrome from a different antidepressant. I was almost off the Benzos and then Benzos were the only treatment. It’s really hard. Please pray for me to break free from these meds and health issues. I’ve maintained a weight loss of almost 50 pounds but have more to go. I was exercising so much in the spring but the summer was horrible (too much to get into). Love your content. Blessings from Canada 🇨🇦 ✝️💚

I had gestational diabetes. I kept it under control through diet alone and my baby was born healthy at 8lbs 10oz. I'm now perimenopausal, and I tell you, it's hell. My A1C is at 6.0. This is my most recent bloodwork result. It is shocking but not surprising. I started a high protein low carb diet and exercising. I'm going to try to lose 20 pounds. I'm going to try to reverse it. So my advice, start your healthy journey early. Goodluck!

I'm doing the same thing no carbs. I'm losing weight, but I eat fat. Can't get my blood sugars down though. Maybe you need more fat.

Diets get boring i went to Chick-fil-A got a 3 strip chicken and i did it ordered a small vanilla shake. I came home thunking my sugar would be 600 or more. Tested it it was 130. It depends on your body your genetics etc. I cant eat bread though it shoots it through the roof.

My Diabetes is 600 before and I got scared coz my right eye went blurr. I decide of doing a 6 month no carb diet , no snack, just ketogenic diet only. I loss weight. And my blood sugar A1C drop to 5.6 or 5.7. Onetime iit was 4.4 super low. Crazy sometimes i go 6.6 . From type 2 diabetic to pre diabetic now. My vision is okay now. And i continue ketogenic diet and Ii will not stop until my diabetes is all gone

Once your diabetes is all gone, you'll have to remain on the ketogenic diet.

I was 190when I started the keto diet. I just now started eating a little bit of bread ever wants to wall but it is sourdough bread and I only eat half of the bread cause I buy those big loaves made by the bakery and have tuna sandwiches, I’ll eat Greek yogurt. Nothing else in it. Sometimes I put a little bit of honey.

Thank you Dr.. I have been struggling for some time. The diabetes has caused me to be under weight though. I think that stress is a big factor and most people these days have stress. I have had a heart attack a few years ago and I was put on statin drugs after having two stents. I noticed after a few months a huge difference in energy and other things. I recently saw another video that showed the statins are directly related to my conditions . Are there any herbal supplements out there for bad cholesterol? Thank you.
