One of the many reasons I was drawn to Functional Medicine is that it’s the medicine of asking “why?” and looking beyond the status quo to reimagine health. When we use this practice to assess the metabolic diseases we see today, we can see we’re in an energy crisis. We’re wrapped up in a web of physiologic root causes, but also a web of policies, industries, and economic incentives impacting our health from the ground up. I loved discussing all this and more on this episode of the podcast with Dr. Casey Means.
We take a deep dive into:
Why we need to reimagine the healthcare system and how to use Functional Medicine as a framework for asking “why?”
Using metabolic health as a barometer for our challenges as a society
A stark reality: Every institution related to our health makes money off of sickness
Combining advanced technology with our own awareness to take back control of our health
Five affordable biomarkers of metabolic syndrome to start with
And so much more!
I hope you’ll tune in to learn how to dramatically improve your metabolic health and support foundational societal shifts, all at once.

I'm 75 years old and I just had the first blood test of my life. My last physical was an Army physical in 1969. A week later I get a call from the RECEPTIONIST saying my cholesterol and HDL levels are slightly high (click). I had to go back in person to get a PAPER COPY of the results. NO insulin resistance, NO A1c, nothing but bare bones basics. I told the doctor I fast and she said "Why would you do that?". I have never had a prescription in my adult life and only one sick day from work. I still wear the same 29" waist jeans I wore when I graduated High School in 1967. I think I might wait another 55 years for my next physical.

I know I’m in the Matrix. As a registered nurse in a hospital I see the insanity. Example, Diabetic patients served pancakes with syrup, cup of fruit and an Ensure for breakfast. I just give the Insulin! Then, hooray, it’s nurses week and to show appreciation, here comes the goody cart loaded with packaged snacks and sodas for the nurses! I…am in…the Matrix and it sucks because I know better…😢

I live in Norway and have been to the hospital many times due to being the mother of a child with a genetic disorder. I figured out that I could keep my diet fairly low carb by eating hard boiled eggs, mayo and cold meats for breakfast. Same for lunch. And for dinner I could just skip the rice or portato, and eat meat/fish, boiled veggies and sauce. Not perfect, but at least it helped me not get the energy dips I would have if I ate grains, bread, desserts..

I know, I had this experience myself. Why are hospitals obsessed with Jello? Anyway, they won't let you sleep, on top of the food problem. They were always waking me up for things. It was so noisy on top of that. I asked my doctor about this. His solution? Ambien. By the way, thank you for being a nurse. Nurses keep things running and the only force that keeps the system from collapsing. Whenever I interact with the medical matrix, I'm always impressed by the competence and kindness of nurses. Thanks to all of you!

So, I'll make a long story short. I was diagnosed in 2018 with an aggressive rare breast cancer. Doctors tried to scare the hell out of me that I get chemo, radiation and a double mastectomy. Instead I stopped all alcohol, changed my diet radically, fasted, etc. But I believe the powerhouse for me was cannabis. I made suppositories from cannabis oil (Indica strain). Because of the nature of the cancer, I took 3 grams daily for 3 months -- NEVER GOT HIGH. I continue taking a tiny little oral dose at night before bed but will continue with only healthy foods and fasting for the rest of my life. My oncologist told me if I want to remain healthy, stay away from doctors --he didn't even laugh! Thankfully he was a good man trapped in a horrible position. He stood up for me when his colleague tried to bully me into the COVID shots. He is the president of the group and that doctor was gone the following year!

Not only are we eating poison, we are breathing it too. And I am not talking about industrial pollution, or vehicle exhaust, and lawn chemicals all of which are unhealthy and can't be avoided, but the additive perfume chemicals added to laundry soaps, fabric softeners, personal hygiene products, cleaning chemicals, air fresheners and voc's that emit home furnishings like carpets etc. I wish someone would start educating the public about this. Our homes are the only places where we have control over the air quality.
@BadAssElf810

@@tulipohare12 Part of this education needs to be to inform people that their sense of smell is actually anesthetized by things like formaldehyde which is in most dryer sheets. Also one can permanently lose their sense of smell from too much perfume exposure or other chemical assaults in the same way that one can become hearing impaired from excessive exposure to loud noise. We have a whole culture of people who are highly perfumed. I encounter many who are reeking of artificial fragrances who claim they can't even smell it on themselves. Chemical fragrances are asthma triggers and migraine triggers for many people.

Would you please do a segment on Apeel and how those of us who are trying to go 100% organic can maintain our health now that all food (even organic) is covered in it. 99% of ingredients are not disclosed. Big red flag that it’s poison of some kind. What can we do? And NO, not all of us are in an area where we can buy direct from farms. That’s impossible for many of us and seems like cheap advice. Where do we get healthy produce during the winter months? I’ve been slowly eliminating UPF because I was horribly sick for years. And doctors just gaslighted me, so I took it upon myself to heal. I’m having solid success, but Apeel throws a wrench into my plans/process. On another note, I’d love to see a functional medicine doctor, but you all seem to be available only to the wealthy. I found the answer over 20 years ago. If nutrients from food are medicine and healing to the body, then adding whole food concentrates to your body, and you'll watch your body begin to heal at the cellular level. We see it every day. Had a friend come to us, was a T2D, on 36 units of insulin, 2 cholesterol meds, 2 BP meds, inhalers, all the things. Adding whole food nutrients to his diet, within 6 months he was able to get off ALL his medications and lost 50 lbs! We can help anyone with any health issue because you both are right, all diseases reside in the cells, and being able to absorb nutrients AND detoxify the cells is KEY and it's where everyone needs to start! We also need to understand that our foods today do not contain the amount of nutrients that they once did, so you need to supplement the diet with whole food concentrates. I'd love to chat with anyone who is wanting to get to the root of their health issues. I have a 30 minute video that gives some amazing information that everyone needs! Message me

Being retired, the subject is now my hobby that I practice personally, and feel fantastic and share with anyone who wants to know.

Pharmacist here. Worked in hospital, clinical, retail setttings, etc. Dietary habits, which are foundational for health, don’t matter to western medicine. System isn’t incentivized to care. My advice 99% of the time falls on deaf ears, despite living out the example well. It still makes a difference occasionally for the few who take it to heart and incorporate common sense, simple changes.

Thanks! As a Registered Nurse I have come across so many patients with fasting blood sugars of 300+ who have been NPO 12+ hrs in the perioperative field. As soon as they would hit phase 2 of their postoperative phase they would indicate that they were starving! Guess what the offerings would be? High fructose corn syrup loaded carbohydrates! During an in service by our diabetic coordinator, I queried why we don’t offer nutritious alternatives instead for optimal healing. Aaaand I was basically ridiculed..,she literally laughed and scoffed at my idea stating “Oh Gosh honey you think you are going to go up against the industry to improve patient outcomes?” I was flabbergasted and disgusted to confirm that healthcare truly doesn’t care about patients’ well-being but more so concerned with profits. They (the food industry, healthcare system, insurance companies, government) are all in bed feeding the same monster. Be cautious as you are what you eat! 🤷🏻‍♀️

So much excellent information you are teaching! Thank you both!, this is essential. Just one suggestion to add: we desperately need to include quantum biology, how laws of physics apply to biology. A major pathogenic function overlaying all of you information is IMHO, that we are not only eating junk food, but 'junk light' a well! Indoor lighting is killing us, as much or more than junk food and lack of dense nutrients for mitochondrial support. I am anxiously awaiting your inclusion of this into your excellence of education.
