Treating The Underlying Causes Of High Blood Pressure

Күн бұрын

Almost a quarter of the worldwide adult population has high blood pressure or hypertension. An additional third of American adults have what is called a pre-hypertensive condition. Hypertension is a leading cause of heart disease and can lead to kidney failure, stroke, dementia, and more. Conventional medicine typically treats hypertension with medications which is generally effective in reducing risk of these complications. However, these medications frequently come with unintended side effects. Functional Medicine, on the other hand, seeks to get to and treat the root cause of whatever is causing hypertension.⁣

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papanicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating high blood pressure. They discuss how things like diet, sleep apnea, insulin resistance, and more are often the driving forces of hypertension.⁣

George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health - a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.⁣

@@RuthLessGemini It is hypertension that is causing disease to progress, however that is not the root cause. You have to entirely change your lifestyle to reduce the BP. No refined carbohydrates, this includes alcohol and cereal and grains. You need electrolytes in the adequate amounts spread throughout the day, this includes magnesium. You also need sunlight separate from Vitamin D and Nitric Oxide production, it's necessary for healthy blood flow. Look up sulfation and EONutrition KZbin channel. Also look up apoe4.info and the wiki and primer. A primary causal factor is insulin resistance at the organ level, this will cause your blood pressure to REMAIN CONSISTENTLY HIGH. Follow a healthy lifestyle and get your GFR level checked every 3-6 months. You can also use a blood pressure machine and check it. Alternatively there is also a KZbin channel called "Low Carb Down Under" where doctors speak about health topics and functional medicine.

In Canada 40 years ago when I went to Dr. I would sit in exam room 15-20 minutes before my BP was taken, 40 years later BP is taken as soon as I walk in AND they want you to answer questions, and then meds are prescribed immediately. Before an exam 1st get a good sleep, 2nd no caffeine till after exam, 3rd drink water 1st thing, 4th before exam go to bathroom, 5th insist on 15 minutes alone in exam room before exam, 6th do not talk during BP test.

I just had a high reading at the doctors. He didn't warn me he was doing my blood pressure. (I am in France and already stressed as my French is poor) I thought he was examining my throat. So I am on a couch with a somewhat raised back, legs crossed, arm at an odd angle, feeling flustered , grouchy bossy doctor, and my heart starts racing so I can hear it, and he has the thing clamped round my arm asking me questions.... and of course my blood pressure is through the roof! I have white-coat syndrome at the best of times. He then prescfibes beta blockers and tells me to go for a blood test. He doesn't ask if I have any other meds (I don't) and he doesn't tell me to not take the meds before I get the bloodwork done. (I don't) Terrible experience. I feel stressed, upset, and generally worried. Waiting on the bloodwork. I suspect I have elevated thyroid. I am generally healthy....not fat, get exercise, don't smoke or eat junk. I no longer trust the medical profession...this 'doctor' told me to cut out salt. (That was debunked years ago). I got the impression he was looking for an excuse to prescribe something.

@skyisnolimit9720.... I feel BP can be taken care of also, just like this Dr. cared enough about his patient that he went the extra mile & took care of his patient. My Dr.'s are letting me die slowly because of their "limited knowledge". Have you ever met a Pastor that all he knows is what he learned at college & is not capable of thinking for himself? Well....I think that is the same place 99% of the Dr.'s out here in the US are like, they can't think past what they have learned. Every Dr. is a "specialist" in his field & he sends you "somewhere else" when what you have is out of his field, which seems to be more than one thing wrong. You made a good comment! Sincerely, Judie

@@juvysmith8544 Your impatience is YOUR problem. If you're so busy that you can't bear to listen to a half-hour conversation, that's YOUR failure to organize your time in a way that gives you that leisure window of time. So, now that we're clear on the source of the problem, let's talk about projection... Your impatience, to you, feels like an entitlement. You don't feel any intellectual burden to be honest about the reason why you're too busy to hang out with a conversation. So, in your subconscious desire to avoid taking personal responsibility, you *project* onto the participants in the video some failing, which in this case is what you refer to as a _"waste of time,"_ and _"Too much talk."_ Don't project. It only makes you appear like someone who takes 'entitlement' too far, and as someone who can't be bothered to understand anything beyond the proposition that if YOU don't appreciate something, THEN there must be something 'wrong' with that something. Although this is typical for young children, I presume you aren't a young child, ergo, clinging to a childish way of responding speaks to your immaturity. It seems you've got a lot of work to do to step out of that immature entitlement bubble that you experience as your life. Good luck on your journey toward recovery.

Different strokes for different folks. I have none of these things and my bp yesterday, was 195/106. Had the Dr freaking out and immediately putting me on a drip for 15 minutes to lower the BP. The infusion lowered the top nr by 20 points but that was all. Today it was back up. Not quite as high, but still way too high at 184/114! He gave me a pill to take. I am taking it. Usually I refuse all chemical medicines, but, he made me so scared that I'm now taking it. For 2 weeks, till my next appointment. Plus I must monitor my bp twice a day now. I know that they need to find out whats CAUSING my hbp, but that's not what they think. His answer to that was that at my age it's normal to have hbp. I'm 64, still working, walk an hour a day and am slim. I do take a medication which has what side effect....? Increasing BP! Go figure. Plus I have sleep apnea because of a severely deviated septum. I eat healthy too!

It's so refreshing to hear a doctor talk about treating the cause of high blood pressure rather than pushing a bunch of pills. My blood pressure has been up lately so I already know the doctor is going to prescribe increased meds, rather than see what's causing it. My husband and I are so tired of taking blood pressure meds. My poor mother, God rest her soul, was put on a battery of blood pressure meds, then water pills, then heart medications... until finally her kidneys failed. By the time I started being her advocate, the damage had already been done. Because of that, I know I have to do something different if I want to live a healty lifestyle.

As both a retired and disabled RN, working in the medical profession since the 1980, as well as someone who has suffered longstanding issues as mentioned, especially leaky gut, obstructive sleep apnea, PTSD etc., culminating in Adrenal Fatigue "syndrome." I also unfortunately experienced numerous surgeries procedures, starting in the 1970's and being related to menarche, menses, and the reproductive system. My research has me convinced it was born out of estrogenic factors in the universe, like floor glues from remodeling, estrogen from store bought meat after getting out of dairy farming in my adolescence. I also drank coffee from my early teens. So many toxins possible from grandfathered products as the EPA development in 1971 (I think,) under Nixon. I have undergone functional medicine testing and treatment with excellent results...when I could buy the required supplements! I have been a student of complimentary and naturopathy methods since my work as a Hospice Nurse, and have embraced the "holistic" approaches since my 5 years in the early to mid 90's. I was in my early 30's then. I have watched frustratedly all of those years as big Pharma and corporate medicine has wormed their greedy hands into every facet of "health" "care." I am now 7 years out from being medically disabled, and am frustrated and saddened by what our country, this capitalistic takeover which now threatens our democracy more than ever...I could go on. Recently had my kidneys ultrasound done, they are wanting to make sure they are not damaged, but, I have stopped eating a lot of fast food and started walking and working out trying to lose the belly fat. Well, be sure to pump the cuff so tight it feels like a tourniquet. That way while the patient is begging to have it released because of the pain, you can take their bp and have a reason to put them on lifetime medication. Update on this post from five months ago. While getting treatment for a UTI, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and the nurse convinced me to finally get treated. Met a nice new doctor just out of med school and I like him. I said I have had HBP for decades but did not want to be on maintenance medication. He convinced me to try meds. Taking them, they have made a big difference in how I feel. My anxiety has decreased, and I am sleeping better. Who knew? Through testing we discovered that I have some mild heart issues - due to decades of untreated HBP. But, right away, I put myself on a diet, am losing weight, am addressing my high cholesterol with diet changes, am starting to exercise, and am doing breathing exercises to help me be calmer. Have an appointment in a couple of weeks, so I hope to show the new doctor that I am now serious about my health.

I had a heart attack Sept. 2022 losing 80% of my heart. I think I have many of the problems you spoke of in this patient you helped. My Dr. let my BP be 180/90 for 10 years & did NOTHING about it, except not believe me that it went that high almost daily. I am on 2 BP meds. now plus a "water pill" & drinking lots of water. I can't hold my urine & don't get rid of the extra water in my body without a diuretic. I feel like they are just letting me die (slowly). Before the heart attack I had an enlarged heart. I was going to 3 different Dr. & I feel like they sat back & just let this happen to me. I feel like many of these things you have been talking about is what my problem is & they just don't care enough about me to find out what the actual problem (underlying) is. I am not surprised at all that I had a heart attack with my BP being as high as it was without caring/finding out what the "real" problem was, but just treating the symptoms. If they ever did treat even the symptoms. The story is long & it went on for years. One of the Dr's. that I have now sent me home from her office with a BP of 205/105 without doing anything to bring it down. Last year (before I had the heart attack) I was on the Keto diet & I felt better than I ever have in my whole life. Now I am dizzy (I blame it onto the meds.) & fall down some. I started taking my meds one hr. apart & that has helped. I just wanted to let you know how great I think it is because you went to so much work to help this man that was having so many trouble. Sincerely, Judie

I really love the explanations of functional medicine. My dad was an allopathic doctor who cared but his training lead him down a path that I later found was not truly healthy. I have tried over time to learn more about letting food me my medicine. I am currently retired, and I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes, high PSA and memory issues. I am taking Lisinopril only because I have a friend who had a stroke after refusing to take their meds. I refuse statin drugs. I am still trying to control every health issue without using meds. I have been unable to find a functional medicine doctor who will accept my health insurance (Humana). So, I go to "regular" doctors so I can at least save money on blood and urine tests so I can see how I am doing. If I tell them what I am doing their response is, "Good luck with that." Thank you for what you do. I just wish I could use my health insurance to work with a doctor who could help me remove the stress from my life. I still respect what you do and appreciate you. So, keep up the good work.

@@velmalee32 Yes, I have been vegetarian for the past 32 years. I have learned along the way that we each have unique physical makeups that have to be taken into account. At one point I was getting too much potassium. Now I have to cut back on foods with high oxalates such as spinach and almonds due to issues with kidney stones. In the past year I also had my gallbladder removed even though I wanted to keep it, and heal it. I was encouraged by multiple doctors that I did not need it, and if I did not have it removed it to lead to a worse condition. I have an enlarged prostate, which my dad and uncle both had issues with that lead them to surgically removing theirs. So far, I am trying to heal mine, but in the process am going to the bathroom every hour or two at night, and racing to the bathroom during trips. I have an alarm on my phone to remind me to drink water throughout the day as it is supposed to help control the kidney stones. I am 76 years old and I had no idea my life would become so complicated after deciding to do what I felt would make me healthier throughout my life.

Our blood pressure varies every minute. What is necessary is to learn how to keep your body balanced, eat whole foods. Stop alcohol, stop eating refined sugars. Take probiotics vit d3, vit c, natural enzymes. I am 72 and not on one medication. We can handle things naturally. I use a ring for my guide. When it slides off and on, I'm doing well. Drink lots of water, and make sure you are not retaining fluids. Too many people think it is normal to have swollen angles. If you do, you're in trouble. I know my body better than any doctor.

At age 82, I've spent my career in the world of improving communication. I would never want to be a guest of Mark Hyman's so-called interviews. Everyone needs to be allowed to speak from their own of reference when they give their opinion. That is the whole point of listening, something sorely missing here. Dr. Hyman has done well for healthcare with Functional Medicine in our fractured country. However he needs to speak for himself, and leave the interviewing to others who know how to interview because they are tuned in, not to mention they are the guest. It's shameful.

I was shocked and I was put on beta blockers straight way. It didn't improve my condition but I started to feel light headed. After a month I went for follow up and now my triglycerides were 207 and postprandial blood level was 199. I was declared diabetic . After doing some research I found that I was prediabetic . I started lifestyle changes and stopped eating meats and oils. I stopped BP medication in 10 days and it was doing anything to me. And after a month stopped fibator and diabetes drugs. I exercise for half and hour , eat time restricted meals with 12 to 15 hours of fasting. Eat lots of lentils , beans and leafy vegetables ,completely eliminated white sugar from my diet . I have not tried meat in last one month but I would like to add one or two pieces of poultry once a week . I am following a diet pattern as proposed by Dr. Valter Long. Hello Dr. Hyman, I really enjoy these podcasts. I enjoy the information that I think really needs to reach a much broader audience. I'm an RN-BSN who completed one year of NP school, but I left because I was totally disgusted with the reactive and symptom treating approach that is American healthcare. Since I found your IG/channel and functional medicine, I realized this is exactly what I want to do. I have been telling my husband for a long time I want to correct people's medical conditions with food (to the extent that it can be done). I believe there is a place for a pharmaceuticals but they absolutely should not be our first approach. I didn't know there was a "discipline" for what I was wanting to do. Thank you for using different platforms. I would really encourage you though to allow your guests to finish their sentences/thoughts before you interject. I realize at times you are explaining the medical terminology but frequently you are not. It makes the presence of a guest rather pointless in my opinion.

Why bother interviewing a guy if you jump over the top of everything that comes out of his mouth. The rudeness and aggression sends my b.p. up

To anyone reading this. Age 77 yrs, was taking blood pressure tablets. Started taking exercise daily (running 5 km four times a week) walking 10km is no problem. Processed food is out of my diet by about 95%. Not losing my belly fat. BUT, I cut coffee allowing one cup at breakfast instead of 8/9 cups per day. Tea cut back too and replaced with lemon juice in hot water. My blood pressure has dropped to average 125/75. Can fall to 116/64. So no tablets required but cannot get rid of belly fat. In fact not losing weight at all. It’s depressing so have to starve, yet I have lost weight reasonably easily in the past. It’s totally depressing, even though I watch my intake of vitamin s, trace elements etc .

Have you cut all sugar out of your diet and/or tried any kind of fasting? Those 2 things will help you and up your water intake

I sure wish I could find a functional medicine doctor who WOULD take health insurance, the M.D.'s are, in my mind, legal pharmaceutical drug pushers. I am trying to take care of my own health after going to an M.D. who wants me to be on anihypertensive meds. I don't want to do that. Plus I have a mild case of hiatal hernia. Thanks for the talk.

Thanks for pointing that out. I can tell you why acceptable blood pressures have been lowered. The values have been lowered under pressure/bribes by big pharma, to increase blood pressure medication sales, based on my critical thinking. B.A. Physiology, 1988.

I appreciate every single person that takes the time their precious time out of their day to make these KZbin videos. It’s not as easy as it looks there’s a lot of editing that goes on and this is free intelligent advice is people that don’t appreciate things or other people that have the worst blood pressure I can guarantee it, yeah just a big full of cortisol ball getting ready to burst

While I am interested in this medical subject, I am VERY frustrated listening to Mark Hyman CONSTANTLY interrupting his guest speaker! Mark doesn't let him complete a thought/sentence. I must move on!
