Each bite of food we eat has the potential to modulate our genetics and impact every cell of the body-don’t you want those levers to be moving in the right direction? Eating for health is one thing, but eating to beat disease is an even more intentional step toward prevention and longevity. I was so excited to sit down with internationally renowned physician, scientist, and author Dr. William Li to discuss how we can leverage food to optimize every system of the body.
We dig into:
How Dr. Li got interested in “Food As Medicine” while developing cancer treatments
Why eating to beat disease is not the same as eating for health
What food would Dr. Li bring with him if he was going to be stuck on an island?
One thing Dr. Li knows everyone needs to do better
Is dairy good or bad?
What’s the deal with soy?
The 5 defense systems to support optimal health and Dr. Li’s 5 x 5 x 5 plan
We talk about this and so much more. I know you’ll love this conversation as much as I did!

I am 87 years old and have had heart arrhythmia since I was 14. It has gotten worse over the years. Six months ago the arrhythmia completely went away. I had read that fluoride in the toothpaste maybe a cause of dementia. For that reason, I stopped using toothpaste with fluorides. Three months later, the heart arrhythmia was gone. This has been verified by my cardiologist. I think it was the toothpaste, but I may be wrong.

Fluoride is a poison. I hate having it put in the water. Means we have no choice. It doesn't seem to do the job it was meant to do. Children's teeth have got worse not better. I've hunted for fluoride free toothpaste but have never found any in the UK. I now use sodium bicarbonate soda. We used it in the the mouth care tray in the unconscious or frail patient in the 60s.

I’ve been in a less developed country for the last year. Agriculture here never took on the fertilizer and pesticide practices of the West. Animals raised for meat or eggs are not raised with antibiotics. Breads don’t have preservatives. Foods are less processed overall. I’ve lost about 25 pounds in the year I’ve been here and don’t suffer from all the GI tract problems I’ve had for years.

Loved this but it’s just so confusing how these Dr’s talk about health being how we have always been taught eating nuts, fruits and vegetables while other Dr’s are talking about no fruits and vegetables because of the sugar and say carnivore is the new way to health or Dr Gundry talking about Lectins and say no to eating almonds, legumes, tomatoes. So confusing😵‍💫

Humans absorb animal protein way better than plant proteins. I start my day with whey protein coffee drink, then eggs / meat. About 30 grams animal based protein is needed to activite protein synthesis. 100+ grams total per day minimum. Check out Gabriel Lyon.

YES!!! - i have commented on this before - i love dr. Hyman - but he is bad at this - i actually think he wasn't too bad this time - sometimes he doesn't let the person he is interviewing get a word in edgewise - and he always interrupts them just when they are about to say something you really want to hear !!!!! - then they lose the train of thought - i have turned off interviews because i just couldn't stand it - he is not the best interviewer!!

It would really help people if you guys put out an actual grocery list of foods including specific brands of some foods, how much to eat, when to the eat them, etc. Sometimes the hardest thing for people to do is simply getting started. What do I stock up on and how can I preserve them (freezing, etc.), how do I prepare certain foods, what supplements are worth consuming, etc.

What we really need to be doing is when we're eating these whole foods of fruits and vegetables and nuts etc. They need to come right from the ground... Those plants that are planted in the ground have a relationship with the bacteria because the bacteria will go up into the plants, leaves and roots system. They take what they need and leave behind probiotics. So when you eat the food you get all the good nutrients. Those set up do the hydroponics do not have any probiotic exchange with bacteria.... And those that come from professional farms, They kill all the bugs and the bacteria... Everyday I eat a banana first thing in the morning with a glass of water with a pinch of salt. Then I'll have one sausage, a tangerine and a cup of coffee. No sugar. He said For lunch I try to have serving of rice or beans along with a vegetable and a meat. I'll usually have another tangerine toward the night and possibly some blackberries or blueberries. It works well for me

Is there a directory of Food As Medicine doctors? After having 3 stents placed in 2013, and two more placed in 2022, I see a cardiologist every six months. I could probably count on one hand how many times the subject of nutrition has even come up, much less been discussed. And I've never heard a cardiologist, or any of the doctors I've seen over the years, mention "gut health" or "microbiome" at all.

Every single one agreed keto was OK short term to lose weight, but eating a plant based diet was going to be the healthier option along with exercise and intermittent fasting. They suggested forks over knives . The number of saturated fats long-term is not good for our bodies.

Very good discourse.. I enjoyed it....I always admire these converted MD's...I actually love Dr Mark's outburst of laughters when he talks(wish I could get him to be my own PCP)...its kind of cynical but as a food researcher with much interest in how food informs our bodies, I understand his laughter....and Dr Li is of Asian descent where they are usually serious in their demeanor.... I keep relearning with these great men!..keep up your excellent work 👏🏼 👍🏼 🎉 and God bless

I have a 40 year old famiIy member with stage 4 melanoma who is not responding to immunotherapy. Unfortunately those around him are not open to natural health suggestions. I have already recommended cranberry and pears; I'll try passing on this healthy gut information. Thank you gentlemen.

Whole fat no sugar Greek yogurt if one feels some dairy is good. Cacao hot chocolate beverage regularly study had shown can increase stem cells. An example of hood meal they said salmon, steam broccoli, few berries and a few tree nuts for dessert. Soy Whole Foods are helpful, myth that the estrogen in soy can be harmful. Eat foods with small list of ingredients … skip food that has ingredients that are unknown. Cacao nibs are small piece of the pods on cocoa plant. Good and tasty. Hydration is important. They said cook broccoli in a little bit of real olive oil with a little bit of minced garlic and quality organic soy sauce. Try to boost your health shield everyday the best you can. Mostly plant based foods, enough protein, lots of diversity of plants, legumes as a core with spices, various leafy greens, mushrooms sautéed and soy sauce shrimp paste and chile sauce, shiitake mushroom and make are cooking and medicinal together. Supplements can be good to top off to fill in the gap. Omega 3 is a focus. Vitamin D. Porchimi mushrooms have vitamin d. Slice them and set them in sunshine for 3 hour to get more vitamin d before you cook them. Even 1:22:21 white button mushrooms this way. Core supplements: vita D, omega 3 and probiotics.

I eat salad and veggies and legumes for breakfast. Same sort of things for my second meal. Dont eat a third meal. Vegan, 65 and excellent numbers. BP 98/62. Last cholesterol test was 150. But i am not that interested in food, so doing this is easy for me. More people need to get a hobby besides eating. Food has become too much of a thrill for a lot of people and its making them unwell.

This is a fascinating discussion on the subject of longevity. Among other Natural foods like natural coco was an eye opener for me. Natural Coco is available in some societies as Coco Sticks, Grated into a powder to make coco beverages, taken as breakfast as a tea. Thank you guys for this amazing healthy discussion. Just love it. To your health and mine. 🇱🇨🇨🇦

Gentlemen you both are really God's sent from above, in the realm of natural preventive health care. When I talk about what I have learned from just listening to your podcasts, I take the time to say: "I am not a doctor". That's how knowledgeable I can sound at time. Like a pro really. One question though, I have heard lately that Choline can be very beneficial to the system. Why eggs were not added to your benefitial breakfast list? Drop me a quick reply please. Thanks again for all you do to help us regain good health naturally. Thanks to both of you Dr li and Dr Hayman.
