100% agree. You shouldn't eat when you're not hungry. Seems like what you eat is more important. Eat your big meal when you break your fast (for me around noon, when I actually start to feel hungry), then a smaller meal at least three hours before bedtime. Low carb is key to avoid cravings. I have an overwhelming sweet tooth, but it totally disappears when I keep my daily carbs below about 20 grams total each day.

Now I have black coffee and am not hungry until around 10 or 11 am, and I've shed 15 pounds while still eating a healthy amount of food. I also tend to enjoy the morning more by not focusing as much on food right away, and my blood levels all improved markedly, with triglycerides going from 150 to 80, blood sugar from 98 to 88, A1C going from 5.8 to 5.2, ApoB going down to an even better level. And we eat by 5:30 so am doing an eight--hour eating window!

I split breakfast into two meals. First water dense fruit, wait an hour, then something with a full serve of protein, but easy to digest. Eg. Protein shake with a side small serve of quinoa flakes with crushed mixed seed porridge. The fruit first helps break the overnight fast with needed water, sugars, minerals and electrolytes just like in exercise exhaustion. Then the protein, low gi carb, plus seed fat meal, does what is talked about in the video. It fulfills 2 major needs. Replenishment first, then sustenance to start the day.

I found that eating later 11:30 12, or 1 pm improved my heart condition. I found that fasting for 18 hours or a little more definitely gave me some autophagy. An overall long period of time helped me beat my heart problem. If I eat in the morning my blood sugar level is stable, but I lose that extra bit of autophagy which appears to be like turning on a dimmer switch. I've done this test quite a few times over a few years. I am also a very slim build, and always have been. But interestingly I noticed my muscle increased with the fasting. There seemed to be a growth hormone release which appeared to protect the muscle.

Beforehand I didn't feel this was an issue but before I didn't wake up feeling ridiculously hungry either. Listen to your body. It may change from day to day, week to week, season to season, year to year. Pause and sense what it's telling you, through hunger cues, cravings, how you feel, both physically and mentally, after eating certain foods or omitting others, and symptoms, improvements, or other changes that may occur. Try to take some time to do this throughout the day, every day, and heed the signs your body gives you, and eventually you should find that you feel better because you're doing what nature intended, rather than what current social norms around food dictate. We're all unique and what works for one person won't necessarily work for another.

There’s a huge misconception in this country that we need way more protein than we do. As a recent kidney transplant patient, I have learned that too much protein can be stressful on the body especially the kidneys. According to my way I should only be having 40 g to 50 g of protein per day. It’s usually .8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. That is not very much. Anyway just had to point this out because I believe it is important for people to understand that too much protein could be harmful but again thank you for the other info in this video :-)

Our bodies circadian rhythm is based partly around what time we eat. Cortisol for example rises highest in the morning and doesn't stop until you eat your first meal. If you don't eat until dinner, cortisol levels will be elevated that entire time.

What I don’t understand for people who eat twice and particularly once a day - how do you get 100% of all your nutrients, vitamins/minerals etc in one meal? Or do these levels build for days and stay in your system for a while before leaving? Thanks

I stopped eating breakfast 15 years ago (I eat eggs for lunch), I dont have belly fat or any health problems bc I don't overeat the rest of the day, I don't eat sugar & limit carbs . Eating a heavy lunch makes me tired, doesn't work for me, I go for a big dinner

In your Longevity book you suggest delaying breakfast to 10am…. Please clarify. Isn’t it also true that fasted exercise encourages autophagy?

That is indeed true. I live in a very rural area with farmers, many old, active, and healthy. No one breaks fast until around noon. Sometimes a bit earlier, sometimes a bit later. No one eats after 4-6pm depending. My grandparents and great grandparents never ate breakfast, and neither do I. They're all long lived. My husband's family also does not eat breakfast (they are farmers from a different part of the world), and the are a bunch of incredibly long-lived individuals. If I were to eat an early breakfast I would feel like garbage. Especially since I'm not hungry then. I'll stick with what my ancestors did, and what makes me feel great!

Dr Mark, please tell me if what I am doing is a good idea. Upon waking around 6:30 am I make a capuccino in my blender, with coconut oil, butter, collagen powder, and coffee. Then I take that to my garden, and work in my garden until around 12 pm. Then I come home and rest, and have breakfast when I feel like it, around 1 pm. Please tell me -- is my capuccino actually my breakfast? And is it a good one?

I am not sure about it. I had been consuming mostly protein and fat for almost 2 years, but my blood sugar and weight did not improve. Of course, I do not eat highly processed foods or drink sugary drinks. Only when I started fasting, eating twice a day (at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.), and skipping snacks, did I start to see changes.

I eat a big bowl of oatmeal mixed with a generous tablespoon of flaxseed meal. I drizzle raw honey. I’m good until 1:00-2:00 pm. Sometimes I eat eggs for lunch. I have celiac and just figured out a fabulous gluten free artisan bread. I won’t give it up! I make one of them with carrot juice and currants. Omg it’s so good! I’m not sure on the health of the flour. It’s Italian (Caputo) for the first time in 25 years I can have this amazing bread that tastes like real bread. There is starch in the flour. Maybe I’ll try sorghum and brown rice combo and see if it works. Is yeast good or bad??

I went to a 16 hour fast and my panels came back awful. I gained weight, had horrible digestive issues, my sleep quality was awful and I I felt like S--t. I went back to eating my special K with lowfat milk along with a hard boiled egg for breakfast, maybe a turkey sandwich with mustard on whole wheat at lunch and chicken or fish with vegetables at night and went back to normal panels. My breakfast is at 8 Am, lunch is noon and dinner is 6:30 or 7PM. Yes, I eat red meat, yes, I eat mashed potatoes, yes, I eat from mcDonalds but eat it rarely and I went back to my normal weight. I also drink whey protein every day. Here is the key. You HAVE to exercise. This is where most people break down and don't accomplish their goals.

I skipped breakfast and was strictly keto for 9 months. Felt the best I’ve ever felt in my life. The only reason I stopped fasting is I got pregnant. So, I think we need to take Hyman’s advice with a grain of salt. Do what’s best for your body. Try fasting in cycles, experiment, etc. I do, however, absolutely agree that we need to break our fast with protein and stay away from the refined carbs and cereals! I’m a big fan of eggs.
