What if we could predict disease before it even starts? In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Jeremy Nicholson to explore the cutting-edge science of precision medicine and how understanding your unique biology could hold the key to preventing illness. We dive into the future of diagnostics, the power of the exposome in shaping your health, and how advancements like gene editing could revolutionize treatment.
In this episode, we discuss:
The emerging field of phenomic medicine
Moving away from one-size-fits-all treatments toward more personalized medical approaches based on individual biology
Long COVID and its impact
The critical role of the microbiome in overall health, immune system function, and its direct influence on diseases
How the exposome, or all of the environmental exposures a person experiences, plays a crucial role in shaping health outcomes
Advanced technologies like metabolic profiling, which can reveal subtle biochemical signals and identify disease risks long before symptoms appear.
How gene-environment interactions drive the development of complex diseases, making personalized medical approaches crucial for effective treatment

I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in 2019. This was a functional medicine doctor and he sent me off with a prescription and said I’d have to take it for the rest of my life. I threw it away when I left and started researching ways I could reverse it, even though everyone says you can’t, but I refused to believe that. I found one of your podcasts on autoimmune diseases and you talked about Hashimotos and things that can trigger it. I already knew I was gluten sensitive because I got a rash on my arms and fingers every time I had it, as well as stabbing pains and fatigue. My zonulin was also really high. Anyway I was still consuming a little gluten and consumed raw dairy. I went strictly dairy and gluten free and the next time I tested my antibodies were lower, the next time they were lower, and recently they came back at 3!! So, according to my bloodwork I no longer have Hashimotos and I have you to thank. Now I’m trying to get my RF antibodies down. They came back one number below positive, so I’ve now given up all nightsgades because I noticed joint pain when I would eat them. My mom has full blown rheumatism and it’s just awful and I will do anything to prevent that for myself. I’ll use Function Health in December to test again and hopefully my RF antibodies will be lower 🙏 the information you put out in INVALUABLE!! I cannot thank you enough 😭❤

Congratulations on some great detects be work and your family impressive results. Now from listening to Mark Hyman functional medicine docs are supposed to go after the root cause of illness like n order to eliminate it permanently. I have been to a doctor who switched to functional medicine in mid career. Unfortunately lately I slowly realized she was going only after symptom m control but using natural methods( which is one step better than using pharmaceuticals). She was basically dodging all my complaints . I mentioned I still had joint pain. Her answer"well that's not rheumatoid arthritis" My slightly low red cell count ? " Oh , thats chronic"( implying that there is nothing to do. )I am now pressuring another doctor for a full gut evaluation . I have intestinal dysbiosis and low digestive enzymes so do poor absorption of nutrients may be part of the problem is that some docs who take functional medicine are still stuck in the medical model where long term problems are written off as unsolvable. Push your docs togo for root causes and if they don't do your research and look for yourself

The functional medicine doc was not doing his job, they are supposed to go for the root cause of your medical issues. Congratulations on resolving your medical issues by taking charge of your health. I hàve had similar issues with functional medicine doctors who remain deeply steeped in traditional medicine , especially where auto immune issues are concerned.

@plants_and_wellness1574 I signed up and had half the first series of round one. As a retired dietitian (who's utilized functional for 14 yrs), I hear you. However, while completely free of any issues or meds, I've tested positive to 3 of the 4 autoimmune tests. It certainly got my attention. Elimination diet, here I come😕

@@lindajones4849 I agree Linda, he was not. I also sat there after that experience and sobbed and begged him to order me a Lyme test and he was so resistant to it. I literally had to beg and it was ME who was going to pay the $600 to get it done. I had been bitten by a tick in 2017 and it left a gaping hole in me and I developed a large circular rash that lasted over a month, so I was pretty sure I had Lyme. Anyway, I now just use function health or ulta labs and order my own tests. I’ve found all doctors to be useless. I’m thankful to dr Mark Hyman for the invaluable information that he puts out. I’m so much healthier now because of his advice.

@@lesworks omg I’m so sorry! Can you share what you tested positive for? Do you consume dairy or gluten? I’ve gone almost completely plant based. I have salmon when I can get it but other than that I eat plants. My ana screen was negative, thank goodness. My thyroglobulin was

Hopefully, the end of 'one size fits all' medical treatment.

Yes, it does sound like the end of one size fits all medicine BUT will I still be alive when it filters down to the clinical level. For now I'm sticking with my acupuncturist. She does Chinese pulse diagnosis and one visit she said my kidney meridian pulse was different , very different than she remembered. So I confessed that I was worried about the results of some medical tests I had performed the day before. I can't hide anything from her.....

The sheer vastness and complexity of the human body as you elicit here makes one wonder how on earth can anyone ever receive the best healthcare and more relevant to the individual, health care, amidst the vast numbers of patients that a single doctor has to care for, in a certain lifetime??! To add to the dilemma is his inadequate knowledge of the patient, his own limited knowledge which is likely also redundant by every year’s time ….. as well as the current deficiencies in the health care “system”! Oh my goodness, most of us will never receive the correct, leave alone the best, health /medical care.

Hi Dr Mark : the biomarker you were discussing with Dr. Isaacson was p- tau 217 which is a blood biomarker for Alzheimers that I believe is now commercially available.
