Thanks for sharing this! I found a drone at a garage sale and challenged my 5th graders to figure it out. They had to create a plan for ensuring all the parts were present and working, learn how to control it, research the laws and guidelines for using drones, and come up with ideas for using it in a school setting. The only bit of guidance I gave them was to show them this video and urge them to consider potential problems ("what could possibly go wrong?") with whatever plan they came up with! (They decided to take it into the gym to learn how to fly it.)

I'm really sorry for your loss! I suspect your gyro was not calibrated. I got one for Christmas and tried it inside first. When I hit auto-takeoff, it would fly off at a steep angle at what appeared to be max throttle. I finally determined that the gyro was not calibrated correctly. I did a gyro reset: hold both sticks down at an angle before launching. I was then able to fly it successfully inside and get used to the controls. Once I got outside, I was able to fly it without having it launch into oblivion. Based on the comments, it sounds like many others have experienced the same issue. Sharper Image needs to include a large yellow and black note in the box that tells people to calibrate the gyro as the first step. Another factor to note: in low thrust mode, it can barely overcome a slight breeze. If it's at all breezy, switch to medium or high mode on the controller so you can deal with wind. Of course, that only helps if your drone has not already "flown the coop"!

With drone and controller powered up, sync the controller to the drone as usual (left stick up and then down until controller beeps and drone lights stay on steady). Hold the left stick diagonally down to the left (southwest). At the same time, hold the right stick diagonally down to the right (southeast). Hold in this position for a few seconds until the drone lights flash rapidly several times. This indicates that the gyro is reset. That fixed the issue for me.

For those who have problems flying this or any other brand, there is nothing wrong with the quadcopters, but rather it takes time and patience to learn to fly. Been there done that got the T-shirt as they say I have learnt that most of the better drones have return to home when either you hit a certain switch or the drone loses the signal so if you do lose sight of it you can either hit the switch (if you can remember which it is or just turn off the transmitter which most of us can remember. now when I get a new transmitter I just mark the return to home switch with either a bit of tape around it or just put a tag next to it. I hope your next model stays with you a little longer. You just have to think that it cost you around $80 for around 5 minutes of fun but you gave130 thousand of us a good laugh so maybe it was worth it. Regards Poppy Ann.

I have a ridiculous amount of drones; some cheaper toy styles like this, and then racing and photography drones. An older friend of mine got one of these for Christmas and I tested it for him and had this exact problem. Repeated indoors with the drone secured, and it's consistent. As soon as any throttle is given it takes off full speed. You have to hold the throttle all the way down and it will start to lower slowly. This wasn't a pilot error, these models have a defect. It reminds me of the issue with brushed motors and ESC style settings. If the ESC style is set to brushless, and the motor is brushed, the motors immediately spin up to full throttle. This obviously wouldn't be the case here as this drone is RTF and the pilot can't edit those settings. This was bad from the factory.

I bought the same DX-4 drone for my son for Christmas. I played with it inside initially but didn't want to break anything so we took it outside to learn how to fly it. At take off it kept rising and then started to drift away. I tried to bring it back but had to run after it and eventually lost visual contact. Don't know where it went. Lost after 20 seconds... My son never played with it. Called the customer service number as it seemed to be defective. They offered me another one for half the price. They said that the lithium battery can only last about 10 minutes before it needs to be re-charged. My conclusion is that not being fully charged can result in a loss of communication between the remote and the drone. Thus, fly aways... Form the DX-4 fly away club and I'm joining...take care!
@RickMansfield8 жыл бұрын
Wow. Very similar story. Mine was fully charged though. I let it charge overnight before its first flight. Yes, we definitely need to form a club. I just purchased one of these the dx 4. works great very responsive fun to fly! This is my first drone/quadcopter. I have opperated helicopters before so i was some what ready for the responsiveness of this drone. This model has three settings for speed low med high. in my oppinion low is where you should keep it.. The lift off is rather quick on this setting and since this model must only weigh in the grams it doesnt take much for a breeze to sweep it out of control and out of your sight. My advice to anybody who is starting out with one of these is practice for a while and do not lay on the throtle.... unless you have another 80 doll hairs for the next one! ;)

I might have an answer. My son received a Dx-4 for Christmas and we have put 2 flights on it. I noticed something rattling inside the radio and would interfere with the right control stick. I carefully removed the screws and opened it up. The first thing I noticed was that the antenna wire was cut. Only 1 strand of wire was holding it together. I don't have a pic but the antenna is soldered to the board, then goes up and over the sharp edge of the board, then is tucked into the yellow antenna cap. It's a very poor design from the factory. I imagine yours was probably like mine but cut all the way through. That would explain the loss of control. I'm trying to find a replacement antenna that I can solder on myself. Oh, and the rattle inside? It was an extra stunt button. I'm sure these things are put together in a hurry and the worker just grabbed another without trying to remove the dropped one.

...once the signal is lost, the drone isn't coming back, don't floor it to take off, easy does it, inch it to desired height and steer, no need to go full throttle to get it up, if there's a stop or land button, hold it down before it reaches the stratosphere, but rule of thumb, don't fly the drone outside at first, get the hang of it and then enjoy.

I have a sharper image dx2 drone. I have had it for awhile and they are sensitive and I have some tips to help out. Tip 1: read instructions and it will say slowly go up on the throttle. Tip 2: don't use auto land. It sucks because all it does is go up and I couldn't control my drone. It nearly got ran over when i turned it off. Luckily it didn't and I was surprised it was still working. So in my words manually land it. Tip 3: do it indoors first and get used to the sensitive throttle. Trust me you will need all the practice you can get. Tip 4: don't fly it in winds that are two high. If your in a yard with neighbors around I would say you should fly it at 10 mph or lower winds and fly it at an altitude that won't effect it that much. If your in the open with lots of space 15 mph is ok but I would still be careful. Tip 5: read about the trim in the instructions. The trim will help with stability and flight. Tip 6: always keep your eye on the drone. This drone requires it because like I said it's got sensitive controls. Don't look at the camera either. Matter of a fact I took the phone holder of the controller because of that. Tip 7: don't freak out. You will lose control of your drone and will make you nervous about flying it. Tip 8: if you think your doing something wrong or your freaking out. Just take a break, land your drone(manually because auto land sucks) and put in an area were you can fly it again. Those are my tips. Hope this is helpful. Be sure to read the instructions real well to. It's helped alot.

What was the beeping noise in the remote? I couldn't figure out what that was in mine.

Kevin Davis when you hit the land button it continues to beep until you have successfully landed and reengaged flight mode by hitting land button again. it's a lockout for the controls. once landed if there's still power you can hit take off button again and fly

I live in Michigan and I found your drone in my backyard. Your wallet was still attached to it. lol

450ft altitude also equates to 450ft distance, it doesn't really matter, you liberated this drone and for that you should be commended, hopefully the drone will have a happy life.

I had that same problem but it was the one without the camera and it went so high that I couldn't get it back down to earth. It was long gone. Those RC's have a huge radius in vertical feet.

I just got one of these, my second overall drone. First few minutes out of the box and it has no control, it refuses to land and I cannot control throttle. Throttle does what it wants. Glad I only tested indoors, is this a huge problem for this brand?
@michaelb14298 жыл бұрын
I did recalibrate it as another post suggest, seems to have helped some. Now I can turn throttle off.

your not supposed to keep the left joystick pointed all the way up or it will just keep on climbing.... if u wanted it to come back u have to manually steer it to come back.... i have a dx3 sharper image.... im amazed your dx4 went that high. hope u find it.
@RickMansfield8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff. I definitely was not doing that. It kept going up on its own. It initially went behind me, and I was able to steer it back, but it kept rising and moving northwest. In hindsight, I should have hit the land button sooner, but it was over trees, so I was trying to get it to come back toward me. By the time I finally started hitting the land button, it was too high to respond to the commands.

I had a drone fly away 6 years ago. I'm still hoping one day it returns..

I know this is an old video, but how did you get the rotors to start? I have one, and I can't figure it out.

Sorry Rick. I've had the wind aloft carry mine away too. (Think yours was a flaw though) Kathy asking if you read the manual over and over again made me LMAO! Next time practice inside until you have the controls verified and the thing kinetically memorized.
