Every year, in US National Parks, people are killed or injured by cars, ATV, motorcycles and RV's. Skiers, hikers, rock climbers and rafters are killed or injured from accidents. People make noise, leave trash, disturb wild life and act stupidly. Are any of them outlawed or banned. NO! Not one person has been killed by a drone in a national park that I heard of but they are banned. Yet the park wardens are acting like KZbin mall cops trolling for done videos shot in the parks and giving out fines. The Police state grows and common sense is dead.

The problem is that there is always that one guy that ruins it for the rest of us. I've met plenty of responsible drone operators, but there is that one guy that flew a crappy drone over the golden gate bridge that crashed on the bridge, causing potential harm to people below. That's why they started banned drone, and I can't blame them.

I agree with your comments but think about it. There is always that one guy and many more that have killed or seriously injured many thousands of people with BB guns, knives, rocks, baseballs, bats, tire irons, bicycles, electric wiring, food, drugs, camp fires, skis, tools, and etc ,etc. Ban them all. Can you blame them all? They caused actual deaths and serious injuries every day. What ever happened to common sense Americans. Oh that's right. I forgot we have lost half of them now. PS how many people have died on the GG bridge from cars. Ban those suckers...can you blame them? I do not use it. Close it down. "even if it saves just one life" ;>0

Paul Cavasino that’s exactly right. When this technology hits the streets, drones were all over the news because of their role in the war against terrorism. The media and citizens grabbed onto that concept that “big brother” or someone else would use one to spy on citizens. Complete hysteria but that’s the hand we’ve been dealt.

That's why I refer to them as "quads". Unless it is being controlled by GPS or something, it's not really a drone in my book. I guess a Phantom would be considered a drone when flying waypoints, which most people don't do anyway, but my little race toys are quads.

Funny story, here in Germany, I am not allowed to fly my drones over or within 100m of federal roads, highways, railways and waterways that are used for traffic (e.g. the Rhine). This is already silly, because it precludes quite a lot of area, but would be managable. Obviously, flying over crowds of people is a no go as well. The real kicker is the prohibition upon flying over nature reserves and privately owned ground. Mind you, not private inhabited ground, but privately owned ground (in Germany this includes farmlands and practically every forest). In essence, I can thus only fly my drone over communal streets (the reason I can't fly over federal roads is because the drone could crash and cause more damage to cars or boats, but hey, since when are cars driving on communal roads eh?) and my own property. Yeay, I can fly my drone over about 0.01% of Germany. Cool... *facepalm*

This yound girl, who was with her parents, came up and she was FASCINATED by the drone! I proceeded to activate the gesture control for my Mavic Air & I showed this little girl how to move the drone using gestures. She was THRILLED. The parents were very enthusiastic about letting their daughter overcome her fear of the drone. It was a truly wonderful moment :)

As someone who spends most their time within 5mi of a Class D airport, I feel really annoying calling ATC and they're trying to handle me while dealing with their real job, especially on the weekends. I'd like for there to be an alternative, like using the B4Ufly app, that you can say (they have that already anyway) where you're going to be flying and all the info that ATC wants, with your phone number (the Phantom 4 app has my phone number anyway from saying I'm allowed to fly in the area) and that gets sent to ATC through the app. If there is an issue and they don't want me to fly they can just hit a button and that contacts me via text or whatever letting me know it's not safe to fly. It could also be sent to these little podunk dirt airfields that are sometimes restricted airspace and sometimes not, because I haven't found a number to call those. I just hate having to call ATC like "Hey stop keep planes from crashing into each other so I can talk to you about flying my toy".

Here is the deal.. The only people that respect the rules are those that are not going to break them it in the first place even if there was no rule to break. Do you think that banning people from flying close to an airport is going to do anything to prevent a nutjob doing it? The only thing the laws do is to limit the hobbie for the people that do follow the laws and have common sense on where to fly and where not to fly even without big daddy government telling you. I spend a lot of time in national parks... you cant imagine the amount of people I have seen flying drones in there. At first I thought it was cause they did not know of the regulations so I usually went up to them and tell them "you know if a ranger catch you with a drone they can fine you etc" most of the time they told me that they did not knew the regulations but you can see in their eyes that the real answer was .... !!! I dont care !!! Lately most people dont even try to lie they just shrug. The park service has huge problems like poaching and marijuana farming in national park land.... now they have to spend the limited resources they have enforcing this silly drone issue. Yes I understand not flying a drone in a bird sanctuary or inside mammoth cave national park but flying a drone on the grand canyon or the smoky mountains ? what are you going to break if you crash? who are you going to disturb in miles upon miles of isolation? places where you can hike for months without seen another soul?

Hi Tony and Chelsea. I am new to the drone world, and just purchased a Phantom 4 Pro. I live in Canada and there are two types of laws from my understanding. One is the Exemption to fly and the second is the SFOC ( Special Flight Operating Certificate) So the 9 KM from any airport etc, 75 M from any building etc is true, but you can apply for a special permit to get permission to fly if you are unable to hold to the exemption. Now you obviously can not fly in the airport perimeter but the special permit will give you some more options. Oh and BTW the SFOC takes up to 20 days to process!! So, Yes still is hard to fly a drone, but safety is first on the agenda with any flight.

Thanks for another great video. I am an avid backpacker, and I find it frustrating that drones are not allowed in National Parks. I would be equally frustrated to be bothered by a drone buzzing around breaking the solitude. So, with that quick summary of the two sides of the issue, or at least the way I perceive the issue, I would like to see the National Park Service allow drone flying at times that would have little to no impact on the experience of others. As an example, Smokey stands guard over his sign that indicates fire risk, therefore, if no one else is in the park, there would be little risk of bothering others. If the park is crowded, the risk of injury is, at least, possible, while still not probable. A sign at the park entrances stating "No Drones Today." Or, certain dates when the park has slow to little human traffic. While this is an distilled view of the issue, meaning there are other factors which make the issue more complex, it seems that, as you say, it looks like a blanket law that could be amended so that it could benefit those of us who would like to get drone shots, and those of us who seek solitude. You touched on Ansel Adams. I have been a fan of Adams, as most, from the time I first saw his work in Yosemite. National Parks owe much of their popularity to the work of Adams, and video has helped introduced a new group of people to the outdoors. The drone perspective would enhance the experience further, at least in my view. One note about Adams. He was a sick 14 year old (born in 1902) when Woodrow Wilson established the National Parks Service as part of the Department of the Interior. I think you are thinking of the naturalist John Muir who was instrumental in the establishment of the National Parks Service. Muir spent time with Theodore Roosevelt who established the first National Parks, then Woodrow Wilson established the National Parks Service. The history of our National Parks goes back to Lincoln and a photographer named Carleton Watkins. I haven't read all comments, and someone my have mentioned this before. Again, thanks. - Chris Kennedy

I live in a historic district that was developed around 1899. My house was built in 1913 and like most of my neighbors, the garage attached to my house was an afterthought. My neighborhood was built to be one of the more posh neighborhoods in Toledo Ohio. One day about 1914 a resident noticed neighbors with large amounts of lumber on their property and when he found out that people wanted to add garages for these new fangled horseless carriages he was not happy. He didn't want these thing scaring the horses and so he filed a suit in court to prevent people from building the garages and to prevent horseless carriages from being allowed into the neighborhood. He lost of course and the first garages were built in my neighborhood in 1917. The horses survived.

I'm from B.C., Canada. People fly around 300' AGL all the time. I was stuck waiting on the side of a mountain for almost 40 minutes because of one heli that kept circling around. We also aren't allowed to fly using video (outside of visual range), at night or, beyond 500m (1'640') away from the operator. We also aren't allowed to fly them in our national parks and each provincial park makes it's own rules about them. The only thing that we don't have on drones is a speed limit...

Just an idea. I've been a commercial airline pilot for almost 4 decades. I believe that the rules for drones, I'm speaking of the Part 107 certification, are not good enough. This may come as a shocker, but I believe drones should be allowed to fly in controlled airspace, within the 5 mile radius of airports, and even above 400 feet in some cases. But, there should be a study group put together to determine how this could be properly accomplished. Also, I believe that some type of licence should be required for ALL operators. This should be encouraged by industry, the FAA, the Air Line Pilots Association, AOPA, and other interested groups. Drones are in their infancy, and there needs to be a little brainwork put into the project of safe flight. Heck! We allow Elon Musk to have a spent rocket BACK UP and land at Cape Canaveral for crying out loud. We can figure out a common sense way for drones to be accommodated in the National Airspace.

I live in Canada and I recently got into flying drones and I just tru to fly either in my house, or if I’m near people than fly a small drone like a Tello or something, and if I’m flying something bigger then I fly it in an open field or in nature away from people.

I once had the military investigate me while flying a kite. I was flying in a large park area, quite OK space for kites. The kite was eight feet wingspan, dual line with carbon fibre spars - which might have given a radar image. There was a naval base to the south. As I was flying the kite a navy helicopter flew in not too far above tree height but as it was in a city I guess it was at legal height. It circled me twice and then flew back to the south. I've no idea what prompted them to come and look.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the quick reply. Thanks also for your very fair reviews of Pentax products. I'm a Pentax user. And rather than getting my nose all out of joint for the aspects of Pentax products you are critical of, I appreciate it. Maybe if enough well known reviewers like you folks chime in, perhaps Pentax/Ricoh will get their AF butts in gear and deliver a better autofocus package. Thanks for all your good work.

Talking about drone fishing they do it here on the Sunshine Coast. They use the drone to spot fish and drop bait which is attached to fishing line that a second person on the beach using a fishing rod reels the fish in.

Tony your points around the National Parks are spot on - how when flying over a river this is in any way being dangerous or posing problems to wild life - I find the insane interpretation of the laws infuriating. I've not had any problems with people especially when I've asked them if they object to me flying before take off - courtesy plays a big part as well as common sense.I was recently told by a ranger to bring my bird down when flying over a river with no-one else around and his reason was because they're not allowed in the park - despite the park advertising everything that you can't do in the park EXCEPT fly a drone. Can't see these laws getting any better either in your country or mine (Australia)

Hey Tony & Chelsea! I wonder a Picture This! about being a full time youtuber/educator for photography vs. full time photographer running a studio for whatever genre you decide to niche for. I'm having a hard time to decide which to pursue. I see educators booming more than the IPS photography models as it competes with S&B business models.

I am listening to you guys on audio podcast and I love it. Perfect for my to and from work commute. We are still struggling in South Africa with crazy drone regulations for commercial pilots. Hopefully they will follow the US example soon. Luckily we aren't Canada or Sweden at this stage. :p Keep up the good work.

About Canada... I agree 100% with your sentiment, but here are a few specifics: - In Canada, there are very few actual "laws" that address drones and UAVs specifically. The law just says (I'm paraphrasing) that the Ministry (Transport Canada) has the authority to regulate and make up any rules they judge necessary to keep the public and airplane safe. There is industry consultation to come up with said rules, but the general public doesn't have a significant voice. In the end, the Minister can pretty much do what he wants, like the recent decree that he came up with, even while industry was telling him it's a bad idea. - In Canada, tethering a drone isn't a valid loophole. Transport Canada said so explicitly. But it can be a mitigation tool if you are asking the Ministry permission to do something more "dangerous" (like flying close to a crowd). - The Canadian map that you showed isn't an actual "no fly zone" map. The red circles do represent areas that leisure flying shouldn't be happening. However, for commercial use, it is possible to operate within those circles. The problem is that the process can be slow and you need to plan the shot at least a month in advance. - For leisure flying, it's actually quite worst than the map, since you can't fly within 75m of buildings, people, véhicules, animals... It's non-sense, of course. The decree doesn't even make a distinction between my house and a building that belongs to somebody else. It's a mess. Pretty much everybody flying a drone for fun in Canada right now is breaking some rule. - The Minister also said you should call 911 if you see somebody breaking those rules. But since people have no way of knowing when a commercial operator has a legitimate Ministry issued certificate to operate commercially, I expect things are going to get ugly pretty fast.

There is not a flight ban radius around airports. The policy states you must notify the airport if you are within range. You do not have to ask "permission", and there is no mechanism for them to say "no - don't fly". I read the FAA rule and this seems to be the interpretation. Does anyone agree? Maybe I mis-read it!

I am active duty and I have a Typhoon Q500+ 4K. Now I am in VA Beach and you should see how much restriction it is here. There is nothing but military bases and airports everywhere. In Virginia especially in the Norfolk and VA Beach area, investing in a drone was a bad investment because i love using it for my photography. Even restricted in national parks.

FYI in Thailand while you can fly a small drone without a license, you cannot fly it above private property without the permission of the owner not can you fly it within 30m of people or buildings - ie pretty much anywhere.

I live in NYC where the city had decided drones are not allowed to fly anywhere (with the exception of three parks out in the sticks). You can't even fly at the level of other structures that aircraft of any sort cannot fly because they'd crash. And by that I don't necessarily mean IN the city, between buildings, but even over the rivers. I personally don't fly my drones, but many others do with impunity. As you said, laws do nothing to curtail the activities of people who don't care about the laws.

I'm waiting for my Mavic to get in but have read everything I can about the US and am just waiting for the number to register it with the FAA. You can't fly it over 400'. I am glad you're doing this video because I'm trying to educate myself on all laws before traveling out of the US with it. I like the permit for the parks idea too. They could use that money for the good of the parks.
