Here at the University of Oregon, they have a TFR that shows up on all of my apps...but ONLY on game days. I can fly over if there is no game, anytime during the year. Does MI have TFRs for game days? btw, that tfr is three miles out! That means i cannot fly in my neighborhood on gameday even though I am a little over two miles away. MI cops may be thinking that IF there is a TFR for the stadium, it will also include anywhere on campus. So the error here is them thinking it is in effect at all times...not just TFRs.
@mlwz10823 ай бұрын
@@TrumperVex No that's part of what he was talking about, Umich tries to police the sky above their campus attempting to supersede FAA regulations. Even on game day, they try to say you can't fly one 5 mi within the perimeter for 3 hours before and 3 hours after and which I know it's 3 mi and 1 hour. So now that the state supreme Court has already set the precedent with the individual case, there's a mad coalition suing the university over this.

@PilotInstitue... Greg, the lawsuit against the University of Michigan is NOT about airspace or FAA jurisdiction. It has absolutely nothing to do with the Long Lake Township v Maxon case either (that you spoke of). Rather the lawsuit is focused on Michigan's state UAS preemption law that expressly disallows political subdivisions (cities, counties, townships, schools, and universities) from creating and enforcing their own drone ordinances. MCL 259.305 is the law. The Michigan Coalition of Drone Operators (MCDO) has previously sued Genesee County and Ottawa County and won at every court including the Michigan Court of Appeals to create a statewide precedent. The University of Michigan has threatened drone operators with arrest, fines, and jail time for even launching, landing, or operating on the public campus. By state law they are NOT able to do so. That is what this lawsuit is about. Your synopsis is incorrect and should be modified to communicate the actual issue. This is a critical case as it will serve as an example for the 17 other states that have UAS preemption laws.
@roamingtheamericas3 ай бұрын
Very interesting! I believe here in CT we have the same. Do you have a list of those states or know where I can find one? (Now that I know there's a term for this type of law I can try searching that, just curious if you know of any good resources.) I'll be curious to hear how it turns out.

I've been working with law enforcement helicopter pilots and frankly it's surprising how little they know about drone laws and IMO it's a gap that definitely needs to be filled. They tend to see them as a nuisance, most have not even heard of Remote ID and feel threatened by drones because according to them, most refuse to cede the airspace and nearly all are far above 400' AGL. It feels like we have work to do on this front.

Awesome Greg. Thanks for keeping us informed. The DJI ban bill will ultimately pass. Now that it has been attached to the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) which is a much larger bill that has wide bipartisan support. We need to get this bill amended to have the DJI ban taken out of this legislation. If you're a drone pilot and haven't read the bill I highly recommend you do. The March amendment also includes DJI cameras and microphones. All communication equipment. I've got a friend meeting with our representatives next week in DC about this issue. He's asking for personal stories of how this ban will damage our businesses. I'm also going to begin the process of setting up meetings with legislators to bring the faces of those affected to the forefront of these politician's attention. There are drone owners out there who have hundreds of thousands of dollars tied up in their drone businesses who will wind up paying on loans for equipment for the next 5-10 years on equipment they can't even use. If we don't stand together on this we will lose. Hoping this bill won't pass, not educating ourselves on what's actually going on and not letting our voices be heard will devastate the businesses we've worked to create. Anyone interested in getting involved to stop this ban email me at forjdmedia@gmail.com This is too big for the drone community to not join together and stop this attempt to put us out of business. I'm a drone pilot and a huge DJI fan, at least until recently. We produce our boating safety videos mainly with DJI gear that I personally advocated for. I'm heavily invested in DJI gear from cameras to drones and microphones. Recently, I've been hindered by the Action 4's IMU being overly sensitive to engine vibrations. This affects stabilization, especially the ability to maintain a level horizon. DJI Support in the last two months have done 3 things, they promised resolution, ignored the issue and wasted my time! Horizon balancing is an advertised feature of the camera and the reason we purchased OA4 cameras. Not one DJI sponsored review of the OA4 even attempts to test it and most sponsored reviewers ignore the issue when questioned about it. They're basically pushing flawed products onto the market and have enough clout to hide it. When it comes to their drones, the market has become a DJI monopoly. No long term good comes from a monopoly. We need a healthy competitive market. I'm not saying the ban is the best way to go about it. However, DJI has already strategically created alliances and partnerships that will most probably help them maintain a market lead in the USA with or without a ban.

I do not know about DJI, but I recently bought a Potensic drone, and return it without using it. The terms and conditions of the software stated that the flying information will be send to a database owned by the government of China. You need to register and give your personal information as well. That data will be also owned by the government of china. Well I am citizen for USA, I do not like the Chinese government owning my data. I do not agree with the ban, but I agree in protecting USA citizens from external governments or companies that takes advantage of people accepting terms without reading them. That is why I use linux instead of MacOS or Windows, but that it another subject.

I work at a University inside E3 airspace, that turns into G space after 7:00 pm local time. I perfectly understand that universities should have the right to monitor what happens inside the campus. I someone flights a drone (and there a good number of users that do without a 107 pilot licenses or TRUST certificates) and end up injuring a person, the university will get sue for it. If you are lucky, you might find the operator. If not, you will end up settling to avoid court. I will not worry about people with 107 pilot license or TRUST certificates. Those usually takes precautions and ask for authorization before flying their aircraft. Being practical, it is probably cheaper to pay a fine now and then, than settling for an injury. So my vote is in favor of the University of Michigan, which I have no affiliation.

As for Network Remote ID - If I happen to be in a coverage area, sweet. Network away. But if I am flying out of coverage area and have no network service, I sure don't want my drone to tell me "can't take off" because it doesn't have network access. It can fall back to broadcast RID at that point.

Any recommendations would be beneficial as I have just kept the Air 2 in storage during all of the churn going on regarding drone flying. Thanks

Taking into consideration that DJI has already established strategic alliances and partnerships, I'm sure they'll remain a strong presence in our drone market. The panic surrounding the ban truly demonstrates there's a monopoly with DJI drones. We need a healthy competitive drone market. It makes absolutely no sense that our first responders and many commercial contractors rely upon one brand, a foreign national entity for the majority of the drones used in the USA. Hopefully this will be the opportunity to steer the market away from a toxic monopoly.

They ain't gonna ban a company obeying laws. You can't just pull a business license from somebody. Quit talking about it and it won't happen. Remote id wouldn't of happened if nobody talked about it

You’re spouting nonsense that’s not how bills work.

It’s attached to the NDAA funding bill for the military. There’s so much anti-Chinese Communist Party in Congress that it very well may pass. Not because of ANY provable national security reasons but because of American protectionism.

The Dumb and Dumber meme places Pilot Institute in the same category. PI is being disrespectful and childish when dealing with a serious subject.

You can't be serious.

@LAP1050 I would hardly call it a serious subject. It’s a political ploy and an effort to force money in the drone market towards our country’s companies. The reality is…we don’t innovate. Not only would the ban destroy that part of the security sector which is already in place…no one is talking about film/video professionals. I myself make a living in video production. My drones are a vital tool. There is NOT another manufacturer that is making drones for my industry that have the image quality, capabilities, and the affordability of what DJI offers. If there was a better product…people would use it. I use the RC remote controller with the built in screen and I can fly without a WiFi connection. I opt out of data transmission and DJI is disabling the ability to even store that data in the US. Where is the issue.
