03.26.23 Excelsior Springs, MO
Built in 1929 and abandoned in 2005, both the building and field have changed hands numerous times over the decades. A number of proposals have surfaced in recent years with plans to redevelop the site for a variety of uses; a refurbished stadium, apartments, senior apartments, and even remodeling the gym to serve as the home court for a minor league basketball team.
This video was caught on a cold, dreary, and overcast day in March 2023. The stadium still bears its namesake, FD Roosevelt, in stone arches marking the entrance to the stadium. Though probably not originally designated as the "Tigers," the branding of Excelsior Springs and its mascot can be seen on the scoreboard and in a concrete lawn sign on the south end of the stadium. The stadium is showing its age but the track retaining wall still proudly displays the Tiger's four state championships in football and track.
If you're interested in seeing what the field looked like back in 1951, the channel @jonesbrett8 has videos from the stadium of the 1951 "Mineral Bowl" featuring the Higginsville Cornhuskers against the Harrisonville Wildcats. Spoiler alert, Harrisonville wins by 1, 14 to 13.
If you've got an additional info on the Roosevelt School or Field, please leave it in the comments below (like...if the stadium was built in 1929, why is the complex named after FDR when he was still the New York Governor in 1929 and didn't become President until 1933...maybe the archway were built later???)
