SMALL CORRECTION: I don't think I said anything wrong in the audio but on the slide for guided/observer units I wrote that they both had to attack the same target. The observer unit doesn't have to - it can fire at what it wants to. It just needs to be able to see the target for the unit it's guiding, and can then basically go on to do what it likes later in the phase.

I think that to some point this is the best iteration of Markerlights. It was always a dice roll of 4+ and you had to maximize how many you had and the options where always kind of either too many to make it workable or not enough to justify (almost) and if you lost most of your markerlight units you lost a big part of your options. This way, you always have the markerlight capability on at least half of your army at any time. Pathfinders and units that can give the FTGG more than once have become even more important, as now the Tau always get to have Markerlights regardless of specific army loses, so it remains useful throughout all the game and the enemy has to destroy all your army to deny all FTGG buffs. As for the Drones, it depends on cost and availability. If the cost is fair, you could get a super unit with ungodly amount of wounds, just by taking a bunch of Shield Drones (depends on cost), but these changes force a lot of synergy within the entire Tau army, which is a staple of how Tau are supposed to play.

Which leaves me with so many questions, with drones being gutted, how are we even gonna survive into turn 3 to make use of the detatch ability? They didnt even show a single mech datasheet, but maybe toughness will be taken into consideration here? The marklights not working with battleshocked units is a huge nerf, by turn 3 everything will likely be below half strength which means what seems at first like "half the army is affected due to pairs" might turn into a 1/3rd or less if your roll badly. Dunno, just doesnt seem to synergize well with itself. Mild clarification of GWs horrific wording of rules needed here. (Edited) In your shooting phase pick two different friendly Tau units, and one enemy unit that these two Tau units can draw line of sight to. The Enemy unit becomes a Spotted unit, one Tau unit becomes a Guided unit, the other Tau unit becomes an Observer unit. You may use this Special Rule as many times as allowed as dictated by the number of units you have available to pair up like this. RESTRICTIONS: This Guided unit cannot be an already existing Observer unit. The Observer unit must be a unit eligible to shoot. The Spotted unit must be in Line of Sight of both the Guided unit and the Observer unit. (This means no repeated use of the same Observer unit for multiple Guided units, but also means that the two Tau units cannot swap roles later in the shooting phase). RULING: Until the end of the Shooting Phase, the Guided unit gains a +1 bonus to it's Ballistic Skill when targeting the Spotted unit. Until the end of the Shooting Phase, the Guided unit suffers a -1 penalty to it's Ballistic Skill when not targeting the Spotted unit. Until the end of the Shooting Phase, if the Observer unit has a Markerlight, then attacks made by the Guided unit against the Spotted unit gain the Ignores Cover Special Rule. The Observer unit does not need to target the same unit as the Guided unit.

Since the faction was introduced the markerlights have been a fun flavour but awkward mechanic, especially with Pathfinders being hilariously fragile turning them into a liability. The change in 9th making it an action with special rules for Pathfinders was one of the best things GW done for Tau, allowing Pathfinders to properly fill their niche - still a bit on the fragile side but being able to mark things so freely made them genuinely good. I don't mind this 'observer' and 'guided' thing thematically, but gutting markerlights is just annoying. I'm also not sure on the change to drones - on one hand it's not going to interfere with unit sizes in regards to transports, but if Tau lose the extra wounds they add to a unit they're gonna have to make a bunch of stuff tougher or they're gonna be a bit squishy. I'm also pissed that it's yet another new edition and Tau are still average accuracy - with all their tech you'd think they'd have made fancy glasses or something. It makes no sense thematically or in regards to gameplay that THE shooty army can get outshot.

Couple of key points that were not stated, the Observer unit can shoot at the Spotted Unit. The rule is just a game mechanic beyond the normal shooting. Second point, you can use this multiple times in a turn. With this, you could even get rid of the 'small unit scout - big unit fire' strategy that Tau have had. You can just have big units with marker lights helping each other out. Opens up some nice army building options.
@matthewrayner571 Жыл бұрын
You must be eligible to shoot to be an observer, so you can't have shot already. Observers also can never be Guided in a given shooting phase. So either half of your big units shoot with buffs, the other half spot; or you need some smaller units to spot.
@Voodoowolfe Жыл бұрын
@Matthew Rayner so you take small units, able to be targeted easily by the enemy, and provide a major buff to your big units...and you think the enemy isn't going to wipe them out easily? Also you will take some foot-slogging for mass OC anyway so might as well give them some purpose with spotting. I do agree some other units could be used, but everything points towards lower damaging units beeing more efficient for that purpose. 3 units of pathfinders (likely around 300-350p) could likely spot for 1000p of damage dealers with good positionning. Regarding Pathfinders Infiltration vs Scout: Is it confirmed that they exclude each other in 10th?

Making the special weapons have ballistic skill 5+ seems harsh.

not really if you move with them in 9th you are hitting on 5+ anyway

@@555tork I get it. Just seems weird that they are terrible shots with their bigger guns lol

@@HandofBlake it's just baked in the heavy penalty they currently have in 9th then letting the bonus for remaining stationary for new heavy counteract it, a bit unorthodox i guess but can see the reasoning.

These changes mean you can model drones onto the base/model that they are for, instead of needing to put them on their own base. Nice, much easier to transport and play with!

as a noob, i couldn't figure out when my drones got attacked, and when my unit they were attache to got hit. so i like this. now i can keep the drones in the back of my unit out of the way, and i have cool sci fi things floating around my space weebs.

I really like that GW is trying to make things more simplified and streamlined for 10th edition, it should make the game easier to pick up for new players. I have a few friends that I recently introduced to the 40k universe, I can't wait until 10th releases so I can teach them how to play.

Very upsetting about the drones, I have mostly build shield drones.... so now they are just for aesthetic or might just not use them if the rules are on each datasheet and you cant modify then...
@kamikeserpentail3778 Жыл бұрын
They give an extra wound. 4++ basically just negated an attack half the time. I don't see why people are claiming they're useless when they don't even know how much they cost.

@@kamikeserpentail3778 The problem is I have multiple when now its a static buff so you wouldnt have more than 1. Also if they are set drones/abilities different to each squad I dont have them built for the needed 😔

Yeah, as a Tau player I still think that was needed. No way was me intercepting a world-ending plasma-laser-hellfire-wychblood-destructor with a single 1W drone anything but ridiculous. Like this can pass through a mountain... I don't think one drone will halt its path.

Ya gun drones are like that in grimdark. They still might be their own squad though. Poor gun drones 😞
