Nah. As much as it was a nice novelty to visit Kanto and see how much it changed, it's very empty. Literally all you do is go for the badges, beat Red and... just goof around for the Pokedex. It's a neat diversion, but there's not all that much to it.

You beat it, and there's content you don't care about, so there's automatically no postgame because you don't care for what's in there. I kinda enjoy PokeAthlon, but that's only on HGSS's Johto. And I never cared for Overrated Fromtier, because there's no worthwhile reward for becoming a masochist besides some yellow circles plastered on your trainer card that do nothing but stay there and be used to flex and nothing else.

I maintain that Platinum was the peak of Pokemon game design. It brought together just about every cool element and feature from previous games into one package. Gen 4 contests have yet to be topped, being a completely parallel advancement system in and of itself, and encourages you to build whole mons to engage with it. Gen 5 had the best story, but I was devastated they removed contests.

One of my best gaming memories is being about 8-10 years old, playing Gold on the GBC, headbutting trees outside New Bark Town and finding this weird looking Heracross that had like this little sparkle effect. I couldn't put my finger on what seemed off about it, but... I'd never found a wild Heracross before! I'm getting that thing on my team right now! Out of the dozens of playthroughs I must have done of Gold growing up, I still remember that shiny heracross being the MVP for my one, singular defeat of Red.

In GSC, the rare encounter trees are determined by your trainer ID so you can actually use a certain tool that will tell you where all the rare trees that hold Pokémon like Heracross are.

Pokemon emerald was my first pkmn game back in 2004 and as a kid who was obsessed with birds you just know I was devoted to my taillow caught just north east of rustboro. Evolved him into swellow and mained him for another 30 or so league wins. When SS came out I had no idea that you could transfer mons from gb games so when i found a taillow in a tree I went insane and once again, trained it to lvl 100 and beat the league another 30+ times lol. Then I transferred my Emerald swellow to the game where he lives happily in my team to this very day. Every playthrough of emerald or any other game since then that contains a catchable taillow or swellow has of course been beaten with swellow as my champion pokemon. Pokemon Emerald is the game that sparked my curiosity for nature, adventure and bushcraft. Needless to say that game has shaped my childhood and who I am today. God bless Emerald.

One thing I noticed is that a lot of the Sinnoh special encounters are on the north part of the map. It’s like the game’s way of saying you’re really close to the Sinnoh region.

people bitch about the lvl curve in this game but honestly I always liked it. It feels more realistic. With being able to rebattle the exp curve becomes a non issue too. Put close to 700 hours into soul silver and still enjoy playing. No other title in the series did I put half that amount of time into.

These specific trees do have different encounter tables that give you access to these pokemon, but I know what you're talking about. After you upgrade the kanto radio you can play hoenn and sinnoh sound on certain routes for other similar encounters. this feature was also extremely cool though, ugh I loved hgss so much

These special Pokemon after the badges are only there because other gens exist. The original gen 2 only had Kanto, and every definitive edition Pokemon game and remake after this started to give you foreign Pokemon one way or another. It's really not fair to compare this with gen 2 though. Gen 2 VC is still better than HGSS though because celebi, ease of transfer, and hidden abilities when you do transfer.

I'm sorry, but i can't see this as anything but bad design. the idea that you should put some pokemon exclusively in random single trees, if the player knew, would lead to them trying to headbutt every tree in the game. what a fun mechanic and is it really worldbuilding to make it so that one tree has a slakoth in it? what's the world being built? wouldn't it make more sense for them to be all over the forest?
