This video shows you how to start your arms down in the downswing with the help of a very important muscle called the Latissimus.

Omg THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!. I am a very big strong guy who has been struggling with an early release since I was a Jr. golfer. What a video the idea to "row" that left shoulder with the lat. is what I have been missing for years. After 1 bucket of balls you can't whipe the smile off my face. Trying for year to lag the hands or drop the arms (pull the bell") but was never in position to actually make that work. I'm a trainer and very familiar with my body so the thought to row and engage the lat was very easy to feel. That one thought has also not only increased my lag and distance but it forced my right elbow into the proper tucked position and holly hell I shit ypu not probably gained 30 yards in 1 bucket of balls with the driver. Liked,Subbed and forever greatful to your channel.

I think this is one of your best video's Jonathan with tremendous detail on this major move on getting the arm's down correctly. The influence first of the shoulder movement descending and 'rowing' followed by the crunching of the thoracic spine as opposed to the old adage of 'pull your arm's down like ringing the bell' is so important. Great stuff and I don't like to think of your information as 'tips' which implies a 'sticking plaster' fix but more as well founded instruction.

When I start the downswing I just focus on my left back muscles , keeping my shoulders closed a bit longer before impact and my hips clear naturally letting me hitting the ball with max speed through a light pressure on the grip. It works. I like the way you explain this biomechanics facts!! I subscribe …

So when my coach tells me to 'pull the chain' on my downswing (along a line he drew on the video) that's old school and this is more natural, modern way to achieve the pulling of the arm down with back muscle. Great video - makes sense to put the lats in play here.

I tried this approach all last year with really bad and inconsistent results, but as soon as I tried pulling the butt of the club towards the golf ball at the beginning of my downswing, the results were like night and day. So I think you need to at least include the idea of "ringing the bell" which means pulling on the club towards the ball, then figure out how to make that work with the rest of the transition.

Jonathan, many thanks, this is very timely! I have been working on how to shallow the club and getting the trail elbow to drop into the side more and was wondering if it was a drop or a pull, etc. By focusing a bit on the right Lat while making the right side "scrunch" move, the trail elbow finds that spot all by itself! Bought your Philosophy and subscribed. I enjoy the manner at which you explain things more philosophically than parts and pieces of various moves. Cheers!

This video contradicts itself constantly. You don’t pull the arms but you do use the shoulder and lats to pull the arms - which is pulling the arms. They are the two muscles that control arm movement in the shoulder joint. When you watch pros like Rory there is clear arm pull in the downswing. If you leave the arms passive and rotate your hips and body fast, the arms get stuck behind you and you can’t deliver the face without compensations. You do pull the arms, the key piece to understand is the direction. It’s not down or straight at the ball, it’s actually the opposite direction to your initial rotation - that creates lag and drops the right shoulder
