I think the reason why most dbz clips online are from the Orange Bricks is probably because the colors are SO over saturated, the copyright ID possiblity has trouble recognizing the footage (and I know this myself) I've uploaded clips from orange bricks one or two times, and they got copyrighted for the Faulcorner music, not the footage. So I tried to upload a Dragon Box clip, and Boom.. insta copyright block.

With the entire original broadcast audio for all 508 episodes of the complete Dragon Ball saga finally being leaked online by dedicated fans, it's very possible that maybe there won't be any need for us to wait for Funimation to release their ultimate sets. You know how Star Wars fans often sell and buy physical Blu-Ray copies of Harmy's Despecialized Editions on places like Ebay and Etsy? I think that approach can work well for the Dragon Ball community. I understand that piracy and bootleg media can be a touchy subject to some, but sometimes you just get sick of waiting for these companies to get their shit together. I'm even more excited about the prospect of fan-made Blu-Ray Dragon Boxes for Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT (DB and GT especially, since those two have never been released on Blu-Ray). When that happens, I don't think I will ever buy another Dragon Ball release from Funimation again for as long as I live.

Ahh, DMCA Abuse. Anyone remember when Toei striked themselves? It killed their own channel. Good times. Great video Tony! Glad to see it's reuploaded. Anyway, I want to point out. This video was made April 30, 2019. The 30th Anniversary Set was released in November 2019. When it was released, AnimeAJay pointed out that they added fake grain to the pictures. They removed fake grain and then added artificial grain to the already destroyed picture. Another clear sign Funimation doesn't know why people wanted the grainy pictures and doesn't know what they're doing. AnimeAJay did a video like Tony here criticizing what was shown. Forum users believe the reason they added fake grain was because AnimeAJay talked about the grainless, damaged pictures. And the addition of fake grain is an attempt at damage control. I wouldn't be surprised if whoever oversaw this thought "Those kids sure do love their grainy Instagram filters. It's so retro." Then there's Dragon Ball Super Broly, not touched upon here. The movie was released to US/CAN/UK Blu-Ray in April 2019 though Japan got their release a little later iirc. However, if you bought Funimation's release, there's a green tint permeates the entire film. The Japanese release doesn't have this green tint. The Manga UK release doesn't have this green tint either (Japanese & English dub). I don't know if Funimation ever fixed it either. This means you need to buy the UK release of the American dub over the the American company's own release. Ridiculous.

The Dragon Ball Z Dragon Boxes look cool on paper, it has episodes previews, previous episodes of what happened to the story, and Japanese ost (Shunuke Kikuchi's background soundtracks; sadly there's not a single English dub background soundtracks in 7 box sets (example: Nathan Johnson's soundtracks (ep: #1-67) or Bruce Faulconer's soundtracks (#68-291)). But the thing is the price of what's it costs. The Dragon Ball Z Orange Bricks (yes it is the worst as it looks) had the price lower than the Dragon Ball Z Dragon Boxes. While the Dragon Ball Z Dragon Boxes cost like $1000!!!! What in the world are they're thinking, I am definitely not going to spend that kind of money just to buy one single or multiple box sets of the show that I grew up from my childhood years. Totally agree. While I do miss some of the filler episodes that were cut, (like some of the Gohan training episodes in the Saiyan Saga) most of them I can happily do without. Also, as somone who prefers watching anime with an English dub...I just find the original Funimation DBZ dub to be really hard to go back to, especially in those early seasons. I say this as someone who grew up with that original English dub on Toonami. It was a part of my childhood, and I'll always have some fondness for it, but it's not something I can revisit now. Kai's more faithful, and manga accurate english translation of the script was exactly what I needed, and the performances from the returning English cast were great. I even enjoyed, and in some cases outright loved, the new additions to the cast. People may have mixed opinions on Bluma, or young Gohan, and that's fair enough, even though I disagree. Chris Ayres though (may he rest in peace) as Frieza was absolutely flawless, and I will hear no arguments to the contrary...I'm half kidding with that last statement of course, but in all seriousness, Chris' Frieza was so damn good.

yeah if i had to wait an eternity for literally anything to happen in og z i would've lost interest immediately, kai is peak and this guy and every other og z stan can stuff it as far as i care. there's a reason non-dragon ball fans make fun of the show and call it nothing but powering up and screaming, because OG Z is what gave it that reputation. if db fans could just suck it up and recommend kai to people, way more new blood would be interested in the franchise and we'd be better than ever (also all my friends think goku is really boring because the only version they hear about is the non-canon og z characterisation, i had to send them clips of kai to prove how goku really acts)

Honestly, Crunchyroll needs to fix the errors that Funimation did back in the day. I would’ve been happy buying the original Z on DVD, but the problem is, is that the quality on there is not as good as watching it and it’s original format as you see with the level sets and the Dragon Box and the Kai DVDs And, that’s the reason why I started collecting Kai but then the prices went up on Amazon and I didn’t want to spend $30-40 but what pushes my buttons is why Funimation didn’t just leave it in 4:3 we didn’t need it to be cropped, there was no reason to and then say “You can finally watch it as it was originally intended” originally intended to isn’t cropped to widescreen! And let’s also not forget that the original Dragon Ball Z was like nine seasons, long with at least 300 episodes and I’m not rich so that would take me at least six or seven years to finish collecting and Kai is not that long because they cut out all the filler and they made it faster paste so they should be less seasons of Kai but now I don’t know if I’m gonna continue collecting because the prices went up for those DVDs. They probably are hardly being printed now since Funimation is no longer a company so I don’t know what to do now and I’m not gonna buy these horrible box sets that make the footage less enjoyable.

Tried to convince myself that the picture wasn't THAT bad, and that FUNimation's "image comparisons" were telling the truth. I could see most of what was happening, right? ...Right? Only trash quality TV broadcast, that was censored as hell, all the names and things were changed, and the quality was terrible. 2. Buying those official, terrible releases, was not a option, they were too expensive, with super expensive shipping and the quality was terrible. Where I live only the manga was available, and that's the only piece of Dragon Ball media I was buying. Even today, Dragon Ball Super anime and movies DVD/BR here are not officially released, they are imported from EU with no changes. They don't have our language in any shape and form. First of all, I love this video. THANK YOU for your efforts on this journey. ... secondly i'd like to add a nitpick of mine concerning the DBZ releases: Super Buu's voice mimicked the original CN broadcast on the first (~1997-2003) DVD release in North America... but Funimation decided to change it.. for the infamous orange brick release! (for whatever reason, they removed the ominous lower pitch effect on his voice, in favor of a higher, more annoying voice)... and to this day for every subsequent release.. do you know which vocal track they use for the english dub?? You guessed it-- the orange brick vocals. Every single blu-ray release has this "problem". I know this sounds crazy. But I had to do a lot of digging and "research" to find out why none of the physical DBZ releases sounded like my old, treasured, VHS recordings from toonami back in the early 2000's. So... long story short, I got lucky and managed to hunt down the old 2003 DVD box sets for the Fusion and Kid Buu sagas-- which have Super Buu's voice sounding exactly like I remember, plus uncut footage in 4:3. ... just throwing that out there. Just in case anyone else needs another reason to hate the orange bricks.

If you watch it Japanese then I don't really know which version is better. Why does everyone hate DBZ Kai? Coming from someone who grew up watching reruns on cartoon network, losing interest, and then rediscovering DBZ in the from of Kai on Nicktoons, which I know is the worst possible version considering how heavily censored it was. After that, I bought the remastered DB set and DBZ sets on DVD. After the freiza arc on Namek, I got burned out. I started thinking, is watching an entire arc about Goku and Piccolo getting their driver licenses necessary? Is an entire arc about a "vampire disease" necessary? This one takes the cake for me. Is an entire arc dedicated to SPACE ORPHANS necessary? In my opinion, HELL NO! I wanted a way of viewing the show from point A to B with the nonsense side stories taken out. Low and behold, I rediscovered Kai. It was the best version of DBZ I had discovered. But seriously though, why all the hate?

I cannot with this slander of Kai! lol, I’ll admit the redrawn instances stick out terribly and the censorship they kept is rough. That being said, the censor issue really is only bad in the sayian saga, and the redrawn moments are few, short, and far in between. The real crime is the Buu saga release (when they did it way later) was a lazy rush job by toei. Not only did they revert to widescreen, but now there’s a green tint to everything I’m glad to cut much of the filler, and will still be my preferred way; but damn do I wish they did it better. Every time I would look at one of them, I'd find something wrong like the stupid cropping from 4:3 to 16:9 crap, or the garbage DNR filtering. These same things happened to some of my favorite old Disney movies on Blu-Ray like Robin Hood and Sword in the Stone, so I would always seek out the older DVDs if I could. Even if companies are obsessed with fitting an image to modern TVs, why not just include a video option on the home release for either aspect ratio? This has been a thing for years. Hell, I can watch Ghibli movies in STORYBOARDS if I feel like it! Just by pressing a single button!!! How there can still not be a proper, unf*cked with release of DBZ in the year of our Kami 2022 is just utterly beyond me. Anyway, once again, fantastic video. Loved this very niche, yet very necessary to shed light upon topic for a mini documentary!! Kudos to the work you did here.

I think it’s so weird that for the longest time in the west dbz was marketed as the most badass thing ever when the actual series is pretty silly.

Might be worth mentioning certain fanedits, like the iKaos one that remasters it the way Funimation should have done.

This NEEDS more views, I wanted to find more information on the dbz home media releases because of a Just Stop video, I'm not even a dragon ball fan.

The orange brick were really bad, even noticable for casual fans

They HAVE to have 4K raw scans sitting around. It's not a cheap process. It's the post-production and compression of these that's the problem

It's a shame that they cancelled the Level Sets DVDS. The Orange Bricks collection was the first DBZ home media that I ever bought 3 years ago and I lost them last year. I found out before losing them that they butchered the visual quality so now I couldn't care less. I would rather watch something that has the Level Sets quality.

I've been watching Kai recently, and for the most part enjoying it, weird animation replacements and all. Then I got to one of my favourite parts of the entire series, when Gohan turns Super Saiyan 2, and that beautiful, powerful song was nowhere to be heard. My spirit broke, and I started scouring the internet looking for information on the "best" version of DBZ. After watching this video, my heart broke even more. A moment of silence for the Level sets, because that's exactly what I would have wanted in my collection. Gone too soon. Maybe I'll buy them anyway just to have a little slice of paradise. The only thing that I came across in my research that made me kind of happy was knowing they released the "Rock the Dragon" edition in 2013. That was the version I grew up with, and I still have my old VHS tapes. I may not try to get a copy of that DVD set, but it's nice knowing they got one more shot at being seen. Thanks for doing this awesome video! Out of desperation I was so close to pulling the trigger on the separate releases of the 30th anniversary edition, but I guess I'll hold off now. Maybe a proper 4K remaster is in the future? I'm way out of the loop with anime now, I don't know if 4K is a thing that's happening with it.

What version were you watching? Japanese or English? If it's Japanese and you mean Unmei no hi, I would recommend Z simply because it has better acting than Japanese Kai, although it still has the filler and weird pacing. If it's English, Kai is WAY better. MUCH better acting, pacing, visuals (besides the weird redrawn scenes) and a much more mature script. The uploader showed one of the VERY VERY FEW examples of censorship Kai has, and it's not even that bad.

@@triiodide7762 Yes, that's the song! I watched Japanese Kai. Growing up with the Ocean dub I never got into the Funimation voices. I know they've all improved over time, but it's still so weird to me. I watched all of the original Japanese Z with fansubs waaaaaaaaaay back in the day after Funi took over, so I have a frame of reference for how it all should be. Maybe one day I'll check out English Kai, but right now I'm going through original Dragon Ball instead.

I was working at Best Buy at the time the level sets came out, and I grabbed up both as they came out. Still have em. I'm still bitter that they didn't continue as they really were the best way to watch. I had the first three seasons of the orange bricks and they really were trash, prior to that I had several of the vhs and DVDs. Then came the Blu rays, have all of those and then bought the latest full 4:3 Blu ray collection. I like it, but it's not perfect.

Excellent video. It's a shame Funi is hell-bent on giving us piss poor releases. It seems their strategy is to slowly upgrade over and over and over again in order to sell us the same show year after year.

Yeah I don’t know why because with there other anime releases like one piece they have good video quality and no problems but with dragon ball they give us bad video quality

"Experience the classic series as it was originally intended" Me: The series was never meant to be experienced in 16x9.... in fact 16x9 televisions weren't even a thing back then...
