Dropping the Gas Tank of my 1985 Toyota Supra | Fuel Pump Issue

I hope this issue can get figured out. It was definitely good to get the tank out so we can go ahead and fix the rust in the spare wheel well! This car still has ways to go!

For anyone having a similar issue this is what we figured out! There is a small reservoir in the middle of the gas tank where the fuel pump sits. The only way for fuel to get to the pump is if it flows over the wall of the reservoir or goes through a small tube at the bottom. My tube was clogged not allowing fuel to get into the reservoir when the gas level dropped below half a tank. After cleaning out the tube it allows the gas to get to the pump fixing the issue. Hopefully this helps!

My Celica Turbo 4WD ST165 is having a similar issue. It is not getting enough fuel when the fuel level is low. I found out after it started running well when the tank was filled full of new gas. I'm gonna be dropping the tank tomorrow to clean it and replace worn out parts connected to it. Thank you for updating us with your solution! - @celikal.185

@@dustiplite3067 So it was a little bit ago so my memory is a little foggy. I believe I used a metal pipe cleaner to try and flush any clogged articles out. I also used a spray cleaner on a long hose to try and force some cleaner through the tube. If that still isn't allowing fuel through the tube you could also create a new hole for fuel to get through the wall allowing fuel through!

I am very sure that the problem was that fuel tank was Less than half way when the fuel pump was installed, I also think it can be done with out lowering the tank, but I am not sure about this last one, Jose Alaniz.

May be you got your answer already but 82-83 mk2s have external fuel pump, 84-86 mk2s have internal pump.

They do, I personally didn't want to take the risk of trying to open it up. It was easy to just siphon it out of the fill port in my opinion

But the fuel tank have a Drain plug

I personally didn't want to risk damaging the tank by removing it. I also needed to remove it to check the fuel pump
