Indeed. It's odd the people here commenting that she was "scared" or that Van was intentionally being an ass with his singing. He's scatting (with his own lyrics) and being playful. It clearly worked to put her at ease. She was on stage with some Irish legends of the previous generation .. it was clearly an attempt to make her feel she belonged there.

For anyone that doesn't know, not only are Van and Sinead 2 Irish legends but The Chieftains are some of the best musicians in the world. 3 years after the SNL incident it's great to see that these Irish greats had Sinead's back. And knowing how much of a curmudgeon Morrison is, to see him so happy and playful with Sinead, he obviously had a lot of respect for her. Fantastic all round. Thanks for sharing.

Curmudgeon - perfect description of Van Morrison! Never seen him so lively as here though. Sinéad looked nervous but her voice and harmonies were lovely. My impression from living in Ireland is that Sinéad was not well understood in terms of her religious journey but hugely respected for her honesty, her music, her generosity and being so open about her mental health struggles.

I was told he has been known to appear arrogant or not overly communicative with his audience. I saw his sense of humour in this and his admiration for Sinead. I am also Australian, but I was lucky enough to see Van perform with the Caledonia Soul Orchestra at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1974. They couldn't find a seat for me, so they sent me down the front to sit on the metal railing that ran around the bottom of the stage, so my 'punishment' for not booking in advance was to have the best seat in the house, about 10 feet away from Van and his orchestra. It was a masterly performance and was one of the best nights of my life.

I guess everybody has their own tastes, but I just don't understand people who don't love this. I guess I've watched this about 100 times at least since Dave posted it after Sinead's passing. Yes, there is Van singing blah, blah, blah, but if one ever heard him live this was not unusual as he often interjected jazz scat singing into his vocals. One will notice that he does this in the same place in the song earlier after the lines: There's a love that's divine And it's yours and it's mine And it shines like the sun This part of the lyrics of Van's song always reminded me of the verse attributed (perhaps apocyraphally) to Hafiz, the medieval Persian poet, in the poem "The Gift": “And still, after all this time, The sun never says to the earth, "You owe Me." Look what happens with A love like that, It lights the Whole Sky.” And this verse has long seemed to me to be perhaps one of the reasons Nietzsche brought back the ancient Persian prophet Zarathustra to teach about the further evolution of humanity in which this transformation is suggested in the imagery of the sun, being capable of a love that is a gift rather than an investment. Nietzsche does praise Hafiz in his writings and thus I think the poem by Hafiz influenced Nietzsche in writing Zarathustra. Can we ever become capable of this love that shines like the sun, always giving its light without asking for a return? Maybe that is the love that is divine, and is thus able to Fill my heart with gladness Take away my sadness But what I really love about this, and the reason I keep playing it over and over, is Sinead's voice. I love Van Morrison, and the Chieftans, but when her voice kicks in at the 2nd verse this becomes something really special. When I think of the sadness she experienced in her life, the sadness her son must have felt to take his own life, and then her sadness at the end, it all makes this song so much more profoundly poignant. I think the whole point of this life, maybe, is not about escaping this world of sadness to another world, but rather feeling at least in one moment in this life this love that shines like sun. She sure had a lot to overcome in her life, and her legacy will be her courage even more than her music, but I watch this over and over again to hear her voice, and her laughter, and to see her smile at the end which lights up the whole sky. Thank you for this wonderful gift Sinead.

It is not the duet of duets, but I love it. I was already into Van and I bought a record from Sinead. So beautiful to listen to.

Two fearless artists get together and make it up with no prep and end up messing up the room. Just all in good fun. Sinead had kinda realized she was not the only unpredictable Irish singer around and found him to be hilariously punk in the moment. She had a laugh riot over that one! If you can make Sinead laugh you’ve done some grade A barrier breaking!

Solid take. What this lacks in musical coherence it makes up for in spontaneity and affection.

@@ocan1033 So true. It's kind of funny that during this part her career she was writing and singing such delicate graceful songs. And Van was almost like her bombastic unbridled alter ego. Anyways Letterman was courageous too, so many non-commercially viable but quality live acts booked those days and interviewed.

I love this collaboration between Van, SInead and the Chieftans. Just absolute perfection. SInead passed away too young. What a talent and again a wonderful performance.

Oh my goodness. That was just lovely. 🌺 I can’t express how much I loved watching this made me smile and be filled with happiness. She was shy and he was trying to help her relax. Very authentic 🕊️

Lovely! Brought a tear to my eye. My wife and I have seen Van 18 times over the past 19 years. Had the occasion to talk with him and get his autograph in his book, "Lit Up Inside." He kindly indulged me for a few minutes. Even asked about the spelling of my wife's name, "Cathy". Is it a "C" or a "K"? Perfectionist!

I am a longtime fan of both and remember not being so fond of this version at the time, since it had the potential to be amazing given their talents. In retrospect, it's touching to see Sinead laughing and in a good mood. Van not taking himself too seriously doesn't bother me.
@ocan1033 Жыл бұрын
Precisely. I felt the same way when I first saw it, but Van is clearly at ease for once and she is truly happy to be in the presence of Irish royalty. It doesn't really serve as a duet anyway .. more a solo number. Could have gone with "Vanlose Stairway" but this was the commercially successful choice and Rod Stewart had just had a huge hit covering it.

Van doesn‘t take his own brilliant song all too serious here, but Sinead surely does. Two brilliant people and artists. Both among the few, who have the courage to talk truth to power no matter what. As Sinead did with child abuse and Morrison about the Covid hysteria. If only we had more of these souls down here.

Even not-so-popular. Dave introduced me to Blues Traveler in 1991, long before they were famous. They went on to appear on Letterman more than any other band.
