Sorry, but the video failed to discuss WHY curbs are used (as the title suggests). The main reason why curbs were used in the first place was to prevent dirt and gravel from being dragged onto the track when drivers cut the track (which they will do, regardles of if a curb is there or not). As track limits are often tarmac these days, they are often not needed for their original purpose and instead function as a (mostly unsuccessful) deterrant from cutting the track.

@wotwott23193 жыл бұрын
tires touching the grass or gravel if it runs wide is a big no no most of the time because it upsets the balance of the car enough to cause major accidents in the grass' case, and produce clouds of smoke that blocks vision for other drivers in the gravel's case. Originally Kerbs were intended to be strict track limit warning tools as they were built with a very steep angle with the intention to bounce drivers off of the sides of the tracks if they touch it, but it has since been replaced with flatter kerbs as the cliff kerbs back then ironically became one of the major causes of roll over accidents.

As an American, KERB is the most hilarious spelling of CURB in the world to me. When I was younger and was just getting into racing and international spelling of English words, the first time I saw “kerb” I literally thought that “kerbs” were some special kind of more refined road border that I could never understand. Turns out it’s just manipulation of the same letters I’m familiar with, in way I am unfamiliar with and completely valid as my own. I don’t understand “kerb” at all, but that’s okay, because as I kid I still had to mow the grass up to the “curb” regardless of whether you want to call in a “lawn” or a “garden”

point of clarification...apex kerb =/= entry kerb. Entry kerbs are situated on the outside entry to some corners similar to the location of exit kerbs, and drivers will tend to specifically use them to slow down more quickly, and to unsettle the car for turn in. Apex kerbs are what the video tried to refer to as entry kerbs. See turn 1, Circuit of the Americas for an example of an actual entry kerb.

You can drive the Montreal Circuit since it is used as a road most of the time to access the Casino. Of course you 'll want to run you tires over the curbs to get the F1 feel.... Driving over them at any speed in a regular car makes you feel like you are going to rip off your suspension, and these are the lowest white and red ones. I think technology by now should be able to allow the following: If a driver a) leaves the track (i.e. tarmac) with all four wheels of if b) one or two wheels touch an area beyond a kerb, an electronic signal should be activated that does cut the electric power of the MGU-K and MGU-H for a limited amount of time (say a second), and if one car breaks the track limits say 3 times during qualifying or a race the time exponentially increases to 3 or 5 secs or disables electric power for a whole lap. I Mean i'd still prefer gravel pits since it does force the driver to actually find the fastest line ON TRACK, but I acknowledge that gravel traps may even impose a safety risk for certain situations or ar impossible to have at street circuits.

I don't mind small kerbs, when the track can punish track limit issues on their own. For example, if a driver goes beyond the kerb in Monaco, he's probably hitting a wall. But, after watching Bahrain, I feel the Kerbs should be higher as to punish drivers who would want to ignore the intended track limits

What if some kerbs were banked just slightly, but still maintained a large enough run off area? This would make a hill, meaning those who "fall off track" not only have to drive uphill (adding more tenths lost) to rejoin the race but may risk scraping and bumping the bottom of their cars? This would be a high risk corner in terms of difficulty and perhaps unnecessary complexity, but with enough safety measures, artificial "sand turf" (designed not break engine/car parts), and Nascar walls like in COTA. It could be a new level or just called F1 rallying 🤣
@Drew2623 жыл бұрын
The kerbs at Silverstone are black and white. This is (apparently) a cost saving measure. When cars go over them, the white parts only need repainting. Other places that have red and white have to paint the red AND white after cars have been over them.

Curbs are like boundaries: you start off with a soft one and if it keeps getting violated or goes too far you have hard ones. In a manner of speaking, they literally are boundaries, albeit in a somewhat different context than the social sense. Flat curbs are the "that wasn't really that funny, but let's continue." Hotdog curbs are the storming out of the room. Or perhaps "this drive is over."

Coming from Karting, I'm 100% for raised kerbs. For raised kerb you have the risk vs reward. You need to decide if it will save you time, the margin of error before it upsets the car, and how it might affect your tires. Flat kerb needs no decision making. Use it.

That sausage kerb at the Bus Stop at Spa-Francochamps, what a beautiful addition that was, helping F1 cars to FLY 😀 Kerbs themselves aren’t the issue are they? It’s the fluid approach to track limits that’s the problem, the drivers aren’t being given concise and clear instructions or having those instructions backed up by the stewards during FP, Quali and then the race. They stretch the track out as far as they can and see if they get caught, if they don’t then the drivers who are adhering the track limits as laid out are being penalised for sticking to the rules. Time for race stewards to hand out time penalties earlier in the weekend and force the drivers to drive the track as it is designed to be used.

Great because during practice, said tires are not damaged.

Just bring back gravel traps, no more ultra wide wide runoffs. or make the limit beside the track gravel, and then after maybe 10 meter width of gravel, nearer the wall, would be asphalt again where tires will grip, to prevent a high speed crash in the wall. And the gravel is there to prevent the car from being able to go back in the track again.

I drove 2 diffent road cars on the track in Montreal. For my automatic station wagon BORING ! Was much more fun in my manual Tiburon !! The kerbs gave the car a good shaking !! For Karting I did back to back kerb hits and bent a axle . If you want kerbs look no further than the V8 Supercars ! Its a thing of beauty on the street courses !

So I suggest a solution: Mandate that whether red-and-whites exist or not, there is a gravel trap or grass placed the exact max regulation width of a car beyond the white line on the outside at every corner that does not have a wall or other barrier preventing track limit abuse. This does two things: It discourages track limit abuse and provides immediate verification of track limit exceedence without the need for twenty laps of review before a drive-through penalty or some such is handed down.
