what is iodised salt ?
when sodium iodide and/or pottasium iodised is sprayed on salt we get iodised salt. it has same taste and appearance as normal salt. iodised salt is most commonly available salt in market.
dextrose works as stabiliser and prevents oxidation and evaporation of pottasium iodide.
calcium silicate - used as anti caking substance and prevents salt clumping.
why iodination of salt is done ?
universal salt iodisation USI is started in 1924 across the globe. in india post 1950 iodisation of salt has begun.
thyroid hormones are t3 and t4. optimum iodine is important for thyroid function. iodine is not made in body so has to be consumed from diet. i
thyroid hormones helps in physical and mental development.thyroid imbalance can cause mental and physical disabled. thyroid hormone is required specially reproductive age group, young children, pregnant and lactating mother. to prevent this iodisation is done. prior to iodisation there were many goitre belt areas in hilly areas which are reduced.
salt is selected as it is cheap, effective, consumed by everyone, easy to fortification and iodisation process, cost effective, long shelf life and does not spoil, easy transportation, easily available, cheap and consumed by everyone, daily consumption, consistent iodine available, less allergic, predictable amount is consumed.

salt requirement in a day is less than 5 gms.excess salt can cause high blood pressure, edema, fluid retention. hidden sources of salts are processed food, pickles, papad, ready to eat food, junk food, namkeen, chips, wafers, biscuits.
iodine supplements is usually not needed if right food sources and iodised salts are consumed.
excess of iodine can be harmful.
iodine containing drugs like amiodarone, radiological procedures involving radio active iodine than also excess iodine can be present and can cause thyroid
if iodine deficiency has caused thyroid imbalance than iodised salt is better.
if family history of thyroid issue than iodised salt is better.
during pregnancy and lactation iodine salt consumption is better.
if iodine containing food are consumed daily than non iodised salt is considered.
