I studied neuropsychology and behavioral neuropsychology in university, and this is such a great overview. Habits and even thought patterns that have been strengthened since childhood, since trauma, repeatedly over and over again are part of what makes recovery and healing so difficult. They are literally physically built into the pathways of our brain. But luckily, we aren't stuck with them. They are easy to fall back into, but we can ALWAYS build new pathways and new habits to help us build a healthier life and a healthier brain. Our brain is so beautiful. I'm glad this type of video can make this valuable information available to more people!!!

I think the best form of challenging mental activity is to try and learn a completely new skill. Pick up guitar, learn how to dance, try juggling or yoyo; stuff that requires you to move in new ways and will inevitably require lots of failure before success

Even though I knew the basics about neuroplasticity, I really appreciate the practical advice. Whenever we are tired, exhausted or distracted, we easily fall back into the old paths. But that doesn't mean it's a failure. Every time we choose the new one, we are building it up. It requires more effort, but will also give a bigger reward. When the new path becomes the default, you truely have built a new habit.

Surfing isn't a thing you can practice when there aren't waves, practice is the act itself. In the 80's we were encouraged by our old hippie surf coach to spend time IMAGINING doing the trick/maneuver we wanted to improve on, especially before sleep and upon waking. It really seemed to help , at times , maybe better than actual physical trying......On the same line of thought, Multi-day art projects are HUGE for the brain to grow, you don't really stop thinking about the progress of the art, do a bit before bed and upon waking over some coffee. Jumpstart the brain right off the bat!!

@penelopepitstock i draw and carve wood, my original carving ideas sprang from a Highschool teacher telling me I wouldn't make money from surfing doodles on my math papers, she's been wrong for 30+ yrs. "Thumbnail" sketches are great for getting out ideas quik with no wasted time and energy, no consequences, especially for trauma work, in my opinion.

I was literally just talking about this yesterday. I have spent nearly two decades as a "high performing addict," being a smoker, and relying on and developing other poor addictions. I feel that I have almost fully healed from past trauma, have a better understanding of how it impacted me over the years, and am almost ready to become an addict in recovery. I was thinking yesterday that I will need to reshape my brains pathways and habits in order to do this. That I will not only need to rewire my brain, but also work to create better and more healthy habits to replace my poor ones. Thank you, for all that you do to help people. Thank you for this video!

My people-pleasing trauma-type personality rooted in my fawn response to my older brother's emotional abuse was like honey to a malignant narc and a covert narc who promptly split up my wife's family of 7 vulnerable girls. My wife and I had been the most respected members of her family until they married into the family. Four sisters have been under their spell for 39 years. And their children have no direction in life. While our children have graduated from universities and have good careers and we have 9 grandchildren.

Hello, Dr Tracey Marks. Nice to meet you. Your videos are one of the best I've ever seen. I want to ask you something. When I was 19 or 20 years old, I started conflicting with my mother. She was crossing my boundaries and wanted to tell .e what to do. She successfully did it every time. There were many conflicts. But one day I couldn't bread properly. I don't know what's the word in english for difficult breathing.Maybe constriction. However this was the first issue. Then I went to the cardiogist, because my heartpulse was high and I started having heartbeating. One day I stopped the medication that I was taking. It was very sample medication, nothing special. The doctor said everything is fine. But my conflicts with my mother continued and I started having tics. I want to say that ,before I started having tics I have done some movements like tics on purpose as a joke with a friend. I don't know ,if this have any impact for forming or having tics. However, I just continuesly repeated the negative things she has been telling me or the things she has been doing. And I wasn't going well. I started having tics. I went to psychiatrist. He prescribed me Lamictal. I started feeling very good. But the worrying didn't stop. I just didn't want to forget the bad things she has done to me, so I just kept repeating them in my mind. I was diagnosed with mixed anxiety-depressive disorder. My question is what to do to stop my tics. They are not that bad, but it'not comfortable. I have so much anger to this person and she knows how to trigger me emotionally very well. I often think that I am like a slave ,when she triggers me. Dr Marks, I have this anger towards that person and maybe I can't process my emotions. When I have a thought about her and some past conflict, I start making tics. Do you think that these conflicts with her are the reason to emotionally trigger me. I think yes, but I wanted to ask you. You are very intelligent. Dr Tracey Marks, could tell me what to do ,so that I stop doing tics and get triggered hard emotionally. What should I do.She is very emotional.

That's because the spasms in my arm and leg had subsided to a level I could control with weighbearing and exercise control of my other bodily functions required mindfulness, and planning. Having worked on habitual patterns (breaking them down) and mindfulness, paired with problem solving (i e. which mobility device (wheelchair, cane, cane type) route planning, time management etc. and now I looking at upper story type decisions.

Good afternoon Dr. Tracy. Your videos have been very fascinating. I was wondering if you can do a video talking about different types of anger and how to help someone who gets angry easily and doesn’t quite know how to control it. Because I’m a dance instructor and I teach a class of adults with special needs and I have one student in my class who gets angry easily when I try to guide him in the right direction. And it makes me very anxious. So if you can touch on that when you do another video that would be very helpful. Thank you very much. 6:12 6:15 6:21 6:29 6:38 6:43
