I studied neuropsychology and behavioral neuropsychology in university, and this is such a great overview. Habits and even thought patterns that have been strengthened since childhood, since trauma, repeatedly over and over again are part of what makes recovery and healing so difficult. They are literally physically built into the pathways of our brain. But luckily, we aren't stuck with them. They are easy to fall back into, but we can ALWAYS build new pathways and new habits to help us build a healthier life and a healthier brain. Our brain is so beautiful. I'm glad this type of video can make this valuable information available to more people!!!

I graduated high school with a D- average in 1967. In the late 90's I was treated for ADD with neurofeedback and learned to focus normally and on command. I learned to control the parts of my brain with sensors on my head, I could make it change on command. Now they are teaching to play video games with the mind. I was given the opportunity to go to college by the VA in 1999 and in 2005 graduated with honors and a duel majors. The neurofeedback did that for me. I just realized that recently.

In order to enhance our mental functions, and physical health, my wife and I have changed our diet, engaged in better physical exercise, and ice bathing. Facing the cold and overcoming our parasympathetic nervous systems fight or flight responses by using our will has greatly provided us both with more mental clarity, will power, and peacefulness after the fact. This gives us the mental fortitude to do the things we need to do throughout the day. I had been lazy concerning exercise, but since enduring the cold, my mind has become more determined, and my wife who is from a tropical environment has learned to love the cold. I see this all as proof of the neuroplasticity you are speaking of.

Surfing isn't a thing you can practice when there aren't waves, practice is the act itself. In the 80's we were encouraged by our old hippie surf coach to spend time IMAGINING doing the trick/maneuver we wanted to improve on, especially before sleep and upon waking. It really seemed to help , at times , maybe better than actual physical trying......On the same line of thought, Multi-day art projects are HUGE for the brain to grow, you don't really stop thinking about the progress of the art, do a bit before bed and upon waking over some coffee. Jumpstart the brain right off the bat!!

@penelopepitstock i draw and carve wood, my original carving ideas sprang from a Highschool teacher telling me I wouldn't make money from surfing doodles on my math papers, she's been wrong for 30+ yrs. "Thumbnail" sketches are great for getting out ideas quik with no wasted time and energy, no consequences, especially for trauma work, in my opinion.

Even though I knew the basics about neuroplasticity, I really appreciate the practical advice. Whenever we are tired, exhausted or distracted, we easily fall back into the old paths. But that doesn't mean it's a failure. Every time we choose the new one, we are building it up. It requires more effort, but will also give a bigger reward. When the new path becomes the default, you truely have built a new habit.

I feel that I have almost fully healed from past trauma, have a better understanding of how it impacted me over the years, and am almost ready to become an addict in recovery. I was thinking yesterday that I will need to reshape my brains pathways and habits in order to do this. That I will not only need to rewire my brain, but also work to create better and more healthy habits to replace my poor ones. Thank you, for all that you do to help people. Thank you for this video!

Thanks, Dr. Tracy. I experienced a hemorrhagic stroke, December 2023. After many MRIs, no brain tumor was found. That said, so many tests, and I am not sure, if they were healthy. My aneurysm was on my occipital lobe, and has effected my vision. I had healed considerably, prior to Helene. Yet, after Hurricane Helene, did extensive damage to my house, still uninhabitable, the stress seems to have caused set backs. I appreciate this video. I do the practices you have mentioned, as well as reiki, grounding, and meditation, all daily. This information gives me hope. I was a very active woman. Now, I am isolated and dependent on others. While, I had healed enough to drive, the storm's trauma, caused the vision issues to return. I am determined to be independent. I drove 9/23/2024, alone with no difficulty. So far, I am needing assistance when driving. I will continue to do my healing work, and add a few new activities, too. I am so grateful for your help. This information gives me so much hope! As someone who lives alone and craves touch, I find self massage, especially on my feet, is helpful on several levels. It allows me the opportunity to experience physical touch, and to practice the healing benefits of foot reflexology which promotes healing in my whole body. If I keep my attention focused on how good the touch feels, instead of feeling sad or resentful that the touch is not coming from another person, I enjoy it much more. If sadness or resentment arise for me, I take some time after the self massage to feel into them and help them to release.
