We both have adhd and this is harder for people who have adhd to do anyway also having the added pressures society puts on us to have everything in order and handled 😒 grown ups might still need help too so don't be mean to people who aren't there yet.

Yes! This video points out to me how well I'm doing, because I DO step back a moment when I'm feeling something, and identify (sometimes use my emotions wheel) and say, I'm feeling x,y, z, and it will pass. Everybody has feelings, everybody feels things, it's ok to feel angry or scared or depressed, or whatever it is. I record it in my wheel, and I navigate life. I can take the driver's seat, not my amygdala. Example, two days ago I was fired. Yesterday I wanted to drink to get rid of the awful physical sensations I had in my stomach and head and limbs, but instead I used my coping tactics, I faced the anarchy of the situation, and went for a walk, then I played harp music at home and did a puzzle, had a cup of tea, and reminded myself that I'm safe, and of all the traumatic things I've already survived in life, and that this is just one little blib in the big picture, I know I can handle it. I'll be okay.

I love this and am ordering those cards ! I was raised by a parent quick to anger and it was absorbed most notably by my brothers , who appear to have followed in his footsteps , flying off the handle for the most minute things . I get overly nervous , anxious and filled with self doubt in new working experiences and would like to train my brain to cope and work through instead of fleeing when things become challenging ❤ But in general I love new experiences , like moving to new states , vacationing to new countries .. I guess it’s performing in new roles , where I have no idea what I’m doing that cause Ms me to freak out a little .

The labeling of emotions, from my experience, has been one of the best things I have done for my mental health. Growing up, I was essentially taught to ignore them - so as an adult, I'd feel all these negative (even positive) emotions and not know how to process them. I first came across this concept a few years ago reading the book about childhood emotional neglect by Jonice Webb. One big thing that I noticed is that the act of intentionally labeling your emotions helps you separate yourself from your emotions. You don't want to identify as those emotions as that can lead you to try to hold onto them. Emotions are fleeting. It has been best for me to identify them, feel them (without judgment), and let them go. Love the video!

I'm 42 and recently experiencing some menopausal symptoms like anxiety and brain fog. This will help when I'm in a random place or moment, and the anxiety hits me out of nowhere. I can just take 30 seconds to savor my senses to achieve a sense of calmness. Thank you!

I'm a older neuroscience student currently in college and I'm also recovering from from SUD. This is really good information to keep on hand. I keep a tiny journal in my bag and I wrote down the steps to both of these practices in it. The journal also has a small pocket in the back of it where I keep a coin that I got when I completed my recovery program. It's a little bigger/heavier than a quarter with designs carved into it that are really easy to feel, so it's the perfect item for this practice. I kind of had been using it before in the same way I just didn't realize it. Mixed with the steps that you've given, this is perfect for an "emergency emotion regulation kit" lol. I'm really loving the new videos that you've put out because I know these techniques work. I like that you're doing extra focus a neurobiology and physiology, which is particularly salient for me considering it's my major lol. For anybody wondering, these things absolutely do work, but you have to keep practicing them. No exaggeration, I have literally changed my life by doing practices like this and I'm always excited to add more tools like this to my arsenal.

I lived my life unaware of having an early childhood trauma which had caused most everything I've endured since 1961, including the awful pain of Cancer. The effects of the trauma caused me to be unaware of being emotionally abused by my older brother until the age of 14, and shared a br with the nut until I was 6. Then I tangled with 2 narc brothers-in-law, who split up my wife's family of 7 girls. The only medical care I received was emergency care by a nurse who happened to be living in our rear apartment in 1961

2 strats: 1. savor senses - fully focus deeply on one sense for 20-30s. feel self after. - this divert brain from the overwhelm by activating brain sensory processoring centor, creating a sense of control. 2. label emotions. -pause, then identify emotions, and acknowledge/accepts. (reevaluate) - this activates prefrontal cortex, calming down the amygdula.

I am currently feeling constantly overwhelmed. I am doing my PhD at a foreign country, loosing my contract with the university by the end of the year, I have no clarity about my future with the residency permit. I am constantly stressed and overwhelmed, because it feels like there is zero stability in my life. I was surprised to figure out that my photography hobby that I usually pick up during such crises is exactly the first exercise. I’ve never been able to understand all this thing with anchoring back to the present moment through the concentration on one sensory stimulus. But I do literally the same with photography. You choose a scene, decide which story you want to tell, how objects are located next to each other, their composition, colors, etc…

Well repressing for 26 years something doesn't end well. Now Im constantly feeling too much. Wanting to cry. Im scared of everything. My self defense mechanism are triggered by my imagination. Therapy have helped but only to understand better and have some new tools. But they feel so weak to the levels that my emotions grow. And is just tiring. Why I have to fight against myself every day to just do the most basics chores. Getting a job feels impossible. There is already a huge problem with jobs in my country and how Im supposed to get one. I cant even go to an interview without panic attacks. It feels such a lost cause... i want to give up but I cant even kill myself, even that is taken from me by the utter fear of pain and discomfort that suicide means. Im so tired. Just so tired...

In stressful situations, I find bilateral stimulation very helpful. This can be done using the butterfly hug technique. I bought a product called Bi-Tapp which is two small devices that vibrate back and forth. It's expensive at over $300, but it's much easier to do this since you can wear them on your wrists and let it do the "tapping" for you. If you have FSA/HSA dollars to spend, I would recommend it.

Thanks for the advice. i still have a question concerning the example of naming the emotions with cards. In your example the person is feeling resentful and realises it is based on an assumption about their boss' intentions, so they are able to let go of the assumption and the linked resentfulness. But what if the assumption is eventually confirmed and it makes the person legitimately resentful? How do you regulate it with this method of naming emotions? Can emotions be regulated independently if the reality of their cause?

Hey doc, I noticed before my five year old had a behavior she stated I'm going out the window in a joking manner. Later in the day when she had a behavior she motioned for the window seeking escape. She quickly assessed that was not an option and was dangerous. She didn't seek that as an option for escape. So, when people say things jokingly or in conversation can they hold some truth? I wonder how often those extreme statements hold truth.

Hi Dr. Marks, is there a difference between a feeling and an emotion? Or are they one in the same? I’d like to be exact when describing my mood or state of being, thanks.
