I'm trying to understand the thrust of what we are learning so far in this course. It's a bit elusive. I understand all the pieces, and I even get some sense of the utility. But I don't think I really understand what is going on. My best sense of it in words is that what we are learning is why Game of Life is so interesting. Build complexity or reduce it. Categorization and why. It's fun and interesting, but I'm only seeing six inches in front of me.

The Inverse is not necessarily logically equivalent, but it is possible for the inverse of a statement to be logically equivalent, right? For instance, "if the store is open, you can buy something from it" and the inverse "if the store is not open, you can not buy something from it"
@tsuyoshi13983 ай бұрын
It is more like "if you bought something, the store must've been open" (being the conversion of the "if the store is open, you can buy something" statement). The thing is that you could've bought this 'something' in a different store, not this one in particular. This is the difference between the correlation and causality. One of the statements may have been a direct cause of the other, but it didn't have to. It is best to say that the overall conversion does not give you the exact formula for tautology, since defining it as this may lead to contradiction.

how would the converse go if the question is “If the measures of one angle of one triangle are equal to the measure of one angle of another triangle, Then the other two angles are also equal

Hello Dr I have a confues about in this sentense : If a positive integer is a prime, then it has no divisors other than 1 and itself. p→q Converse: If a positive integer has no divisors other than 1 and itself, then it is a prime. q→p Inverse: If a positive integer is not a prime, then it has divisors other than 1 and itself. ¬p→¬q It still true and u said it is not logical equivalent can u help me

what should be the converse of sum of two odd integers is even
@ambassador_in_training4 жыл бұрын
"Sum of two odd integers is even" needs to be put into a conditional statement. Implication: "If X and Y are odd, then X+Y is even" Converse: "If X+Y is even, then X and Y are odd"

This is a preparation for the more advanced math courses such advanced calculus/real analysis, abstract algebra, topology etc. These advanced courses are heavily proof-based. To prove a mathematical theorem, one would need to use these logical steps. Math professors assume you have this knowledge. For example, the famous proof that "√2 is irrational" is very difficult to prove directly, but very easy to use the method of contradiction. Or another, the implication is sometimes more difficult to prove than the contrapositive. So, instead of using "If P, then Q", you'd use its logical equivalent "If not Q, then not P" to prove the particular theorem! And so on! Dr. Trefor helps us understand how these things will make our lives so much easier in the later math courses. He build the much needed foundation for theoretical mathematics used by math, physics, computer science majors! I can speak from experience. I failed to get my math degree because I didn't have the foundation for doing math proofs. I had no clue how to begin a proof of a theorem and much less how to demonstrate why it's true. I was so confused!!!! I had to QUIT math and get into nursing. Still doing nursing :))) So, I have been trying to get back into mathematics and hope this time around I will be well prepared for the proofs. I hope this helps!
