My wife and I came very close to being in this situation. We were addicted for years and living in hotels (with kids). We got on methadone and it helped save our lives. This was in the 90’s. Now we have grandchildren, are still clean, and are still married decades later and happier than ever. This interview hits close to the bone. Add: I didn’t mention how hard it was to get off methadone- it’s SLOW, as in a few years… but it’s nothing like trying to live in the streets and sling/tangle dope. If you follow the plan you can get clean.

Good work. Medically assisted treatment can work. But one has to put as much or more time into it to get clean. It’s probably one or the other extreme. We enable each other to get worse or we enable each other to become better. But unfortunately the reality of the situation is that a majority will just enable each other to get worse. If one is almost there and the other is not, they end up getting pulled back down. If they are truly lucky they will find someone at the same level of self awareness and be each others support systems. That’s what saved my wife and I. It’s so stupid and cliché to say but love heals all. That’s why they are in this situation. A lack of love and understanding somewhere along the line. Period! Everything else is just a symptom of that lack of love.

I was with this girl I met when I was 18, and we went from smoking weed to full blown opioid addiction. Usually it's more of a partner in crime situation instead of a real relationship. Once I got clean, and she didn't, you see how little you really have in common with the other person. In the throws of addiction, you couldn't tell me to leave her. But once I did, it was life changing. There are people who can get clean and stay together, but 9/10 times it doesn't work. No one wants to hear it, but it's a huge step.

A head that never ever is quiet. It's hard to live with a head that fucking never takes one second off! That's why people use because they need to feel som peace from themselves. However, there are examples like you, who actually have quit drugs. And you've probably learnt other methods to deal with your demons. Some people exercise, some knit, some paint, but also therapy is needed in most cases. Good luck, you've done something amazing, I hope you're extremely proud of yourself because you deserve it!

I think it should be a law that every pregnant woman in this country is drug tested regularly. If they repeatedly fail when that child is born that needs to be taken away from them. I had a friend in childhood, who got into drugs in his teen years. Later in life our paths diverged for several years and when I met him at the age of 20+ he looked like himself, but it wasn't him, he was like a totally different person; he lost any happiness in life and was senseless and depressed while sober. Basically, he didn't live anymore, he just existed... It's so sad and distutbing to witness how drugs degrade people to the level where they lose any purpose in life beside getting high... He was raised by a single mother and from these series as well I can see how important for a child is to have both parents who are also adequate, and I'm so grateful I have both.

Obviously there's that strong physical addiction there but the emotional addiction that comes with it also is so evident here. Their need to escape reality is too much.. Marks responses to this interview are also interesting - almost judgemental and impatient. That's said in a purely observational way without criticism. As a therapist, I'm interested in analysing why he responded in the way he did.. As always, love your work and content Mark x

Drugs keep you in arrested development. The pain is the void or space between adolescence and adulthood all humans pass through. Anxiety is a human condition most people have. Using drugs is the easiest way to address it. So whenever an addict becomes sober it returns greater than ever. It builds. The good news is it goes away as you mature, sober.
