just wanted to say, you are a great teacher. so clear and respectable way of explaining. really love to way you took the time to explain such an obvious rhythm in a deeper understanding view. this way you gave us the tools to understand thing of same manner, and be able to brake it down, see it clear. so we can try and play it with understanding. salute to you ! thanks

very nice lesson, really clear and helpful, always played that from ear and i missed some of the "of"s and knowing what exactly it was helped slowing the thing down really to do it better. Thank you very much

That was an excellent Lesson. I especially liked the way you explained the grid to work out any Poly-rhythm. Doing it that way you can see & understand what's going on!

I totally hear that as a quintuplet based groove. The difference is so small though that it's almost inconsequential. The in-between hi-hat stuff just starts a smidge sooner and is a little more spaced because there's one less subdivision in the beat.

I had just seen the clip of Chris Dave and was pretty blown away by his playing. Googled and this came up. Nice work Joe. Love the explanation - particularly of the shuffle which has been a bugger for me to master

Good analysis Bro, it's a good thing to put some theory on those groovz ! But to me, to play those kind of things more relate on feeling the groove. And the rythmic possibilites (as polyrythms are) naturally come from this groove feeling. I guess that's a different approach, and your lesson is quite clear ! Have a nice day

I was experimenting with my mpc to get that infamous J Dilla or Madlib feel. Playing/Programming the beat in the cracks somewhere between straight and shuffle like Zigaboo is definitely one aspect. You described that very well. Another thing that worked, was moving the Hihat-strokes on the Backbeat (2+4) one 64th-note forward and the snare one 64th-note backward. So the hihat is just before the backbeat and the snare is slightly behind it. Creates a great laid back feel.

Hi Nirvan, I put this exact clip on a grid in cubase to check what was going on. If you want it to sound the same as Chris is playing then play what I explain in the video and then allow the straight 8th notes to be a tiny bit late. Hey joe ! Great explanation don't pay attention to haters... Explaining any art form from a particular person has nuances that are better left for another lesson.. But you covered alot of ground in this clip. It was a great way to tackle Chris Dave in that clip! So yeah great job! And thank you.

Yes, finally someone who knows what they're talking about!!! I know that reading music is important but stuff like this doesn't come from what's on the sheet music, you gotta feel this kind of stuff. J Dilla is a great innovator in the feel on hip hop and other styles of music but i think this feel also comes from the new orleans shuffle (zigaboo drumming) where its in between a straight groove and a full blown swing. I find this video a bit comical... but nonetheless he's explained it great!!

I think the "slightly off" kind of feel that Chris Dave had in that clip (and has in a LOT of the music he plays) is something that came from J Dilla. I don't know that it's really meant to be written out and cut up like this, I would just think of it as the quarter notes being on time, but the ands being ever so slightly late. the first note that would come right on the beat isn't always played, but it would still have that distinctive, laid back J Dilla feel

This video gets you 99% of the way to playing this groove. A lot of Chris Dave stuff does blur the lines a lot more, but in this clip he's playing almost exactly what I explain. If you want to make it a bit closer then the straight 8th note part should be played a little late. I believe and some point Chris has worked on this exact concept. It's a great starting point. There's a new link in the video description to a lesson about playing between straight and swung. Didn't mean to offend :)

I agree that this groove isn't exactly on the gird. However, I believe that it's a good starting point for understanding what's going on. I know from experience how off putting it can be when something is explained as "feel". It just makes drumming seem more mysterious than it needs to be. I have a lesson on approaches to playing between straight and swung on my website (it's in the video description). Those are things that definitely aren't on the grid. Thanks for the feedback. Joe

...not shure but I think Chris Dave's Beat sounds like quintuplets. Just divide the space between down and back beat by five and play the 3. and 4. quintuplet. Downbeat = D, Backbeat = B D B 1 2 3 4 5 1 2 3 4 5 x x x x x x

Thanks. I can't really answer your question. You'll just have to play around and come up with something that you like. Once you're familiar with the sound of playing 3 vs 2 you'll find you can use it to spice up lots of grooves.

To be honest, it's hard to fit other polyrhythms into grooves without them sounding contrived. 3v2 works because it's essentially swung vs straight. u have to mention the 'feel' of it !! which isint straight 8ths or triplets !! but somewhere in the middle !! 'SWUNG" !!If u know what i mean.. the hats in that particular groove are behind the beat! , the bass drum is a little ahead (almost pushing it) snare is back too !!

Great lesson man. I have one question; i cant do all of that easily when I listen and copy the movements but most of time when i play, I dont know what I am doing technically. I just copy somethings that i have seen from videos but i am not aware that I do a polyrhytim or a paradiddle or a double stroke. And because of that, I think my drumming doesnt improve. What would u suggest to do?

It doesn't matter if you don't know what things are called. Knowing names for things can be useful for communicating with other drummers and for coming up with new ideas. It means you can think about things away from the drums. Keep watching videos and trying new things. You'll pick up the terminology as you hear the same things talked about in different places. None of it is easy to begin with. Using paradiddles in fills, for example, first requires that you can play a paradiddle (and that's not easy if you've not done it before). Work at the things slowly and eventually they'll begin to feel comfortable and you'll be able to apply them to other areas of your playing. This lesson really seems to have rubbed some people up the wrong way :) It's meant to be a guide to getting started. The groove he's playing is approximately what I've described and this video. In essence the straight 8th notes he plays are a little behind, but playing what I explain will get you pretty close and you can tweak from there. I believe talking about feel and "laying back" don't really help someone learn something. Terms like that just make things sound unattainable.

it's is more of a swing, and what he really is doing is just flams on the hi-hat to create that feel. snare and kick are just quarter notes.

The "3" in 3 against 2 as demonstrated here is your swing, although Joe does not say the word. I think CDD is playing flams between the hat and snare in addition.

It's on KZbin he is just jamming to a few songs, there are 2 parts but the second one had a Kanye song on it and the sound was taken off. Still pisses me off its gone.

My intention wasn't to offend anyone, and I didn't profess to play it well. I was just explaining the basic idea behind what is going on. If I'm teaching and somebody asks me to explain what's going on it's not very instructive for me to say "just feel it". If somebody only understood 8th notes and had never thought of the concept of dividing a beat into 3 (triplets), then telling them to "just feel" playing a shuffle wouldn't help much. Explaining what a triplet is would help them much more.

Even though you don't like to say you have to "feel" it to get it, that is reality. There is much more to music than what you can relate with written music, and your beat sounds woefully inept compared to his, even though you may have it technically notated right. Music and drums are mysterious and can't be broken down into strictly technical terms as you have tried to do

That groove is exactly on the grid. The only problem is quantizing. The beat has a note with dot or a flam whatever term you like. Here is the the great and terrible Jojo Mayer explains flams in shift beat. Nice groove there btw /watch?v=u7M_guTvIwI&t=357

The flamed approach would be far easy to execute. Both hand or feet sound like a flamed note which delays in fact the 32nd note.

Nice Lesson and this is pretty much the technical side of it... however, the feel is not that squares it more analogous meaning ... its what most black musicians call the slug, so it is dragged to and thats how you get the feel
