When I say RotoToms who comes to mind? Terry Bozzio, Bill Buford, Alex Van Halen ... I'm sure there are others that I missed. This video is about my journey into Roto Toms. My first purchase of a RotoTom and some of the players that used them. The drums have a unique sound and still can be fun to use sometimes. I hope you enjoy.
For those that will write me ... I made the mistake Dana Carey and it should be Danny Carey! I had Dana Carvey the comedian’s name in my head. Please note that I riff these shows from my memory ... no notes and lots of mistakes. I apologize for any issues this mistake may have caused!
This video was recorded using Logic Pro X and the Over head mics to capture my discussion.
Equipment:
Gretsch - 14x22
Ludwig Black Beauty - 5x14
Remo Roto Toms - 10", 12", 14"

Had some years ago. They were fun 😊. Not for all occasions but fun. Interesting show. I noticed you mentioned Terry Bozzio again. He was one of the first drummers I learned from. I ordered vcr tapes back then to learn. Terry had double and single bass instructional vids. I was 27 when I started drumming as partly physical therapy and hobby.

I just found this piece that you put out some time ago, and I found it quite interesting. I just love the ease at which these drums can be tuned. You mentioned that there are only a handful of drummers that utilize these drums today, and the reason may be the lack of depth they produce due to not having shells. I have never seen any of these in person but they sure seem cool to me. I just wish they weren’t so darn expensive. Thank you for posting this, and I am glad I found it.

Soooo... back in the 90's, ddrum brains were the "thing" - and I purchased one for touring. You could load your own samples into the Turbo 3? I think that's what model I had - my FOH engineer said "load Roto-tom samples into the brain for all three toms." so I went to a studio and recorded some roto toms and then cut them up in the sampler. Then he said "tune your acoustic drums to those exact pitches. So, the samples were triggered and EQ'd and compressed as really precise "speaker movers" and then the microphones would pick up the natural sound of the drums. So we had a sample AND the natural acoustic drum sound coming through the PA. this is what Ministry was doing back in the 90's and he kind of stole the idea so... anyway.. Then you would put a short burst of 60hz on your kick drum. FOH would crank it up and make those PA speaker stove out in front of 20K seaters.... Makes your drum sound Big, Bold and LOUD as all hell. Great video and good playing......

I have a 8,10,12,14 chrome roots and I have always felt (through hearing Bozzio, Alex VH, and Eric Kretz of Stone Temple Pilots, etc...) any size larger than 14 doesn't seem to be very effective. For instance the 18" that people used as the low floor (or in some insane applications as a bass drum?!?) Didn't sound as effective as the higher range rotos. Cool vid.

@@billdrummer1197 Me? I don't think so? But after 15 years.. When playing in a small room, the fast and clear tone of a roto is far better for me than a deep tom, and without being completely acid it's a little bit different. I actually swapped the 12" for a 10". Double 24"s with a double pedal on the left, tight kick, with a single on the right, which is more open, very cool kit.

Earl, thanks for talking about rotos...my first "drumkit" was a used kitchen seat(!), and I got my first real drumkit in late '73...I like how you mounted your rotos...one particular limiting issue with rotos was that 1 track uni-mount which ultimately prevented individual angling (some years ago I was toying with a solution to this)...then again, rotos seemed to have been intended as an accessory to a drumkit...for tuning adjustment, rotos were king (compared to the multilug arrangement of most drums)...if you want a roto-similar sound AND ease-of-tuning and angling capacity, then an alternative is to go with flats (shell-less drums)...on these (flats), the tuning mechanism is a single flange (vs. multilug) arrangement... otherwise, if you're trying to lessen/eliminate any "boing", I think some muffling (rings, tape, moon gel) might help to some degree...with both my acoustic kit and e-kit, I tended to use a makeshift approach; rather than spend more on another kit piece, adjust/modify the kit piece you already have...for example, I used exercise mat foam for producing a mesh head feel on my e-kit -(which beats spending several thousand dollars on a Roland kit)...

@@earldrum @Earl Bennett - earldrum You're welcome, Earl...thanks for the kind words, too...your comment on my own resourcefulness caused me to think of a line from the '95 movie, Apollo 13...Jim Lovell's mother says to her granddaughter, "If they could make a washing machine fly, my Jimmy could land it."...my guess is that you enjoy all things drums like I do...I made my share of mistakes over the years - including paying $12 for an 18" ride...I ended up drilling it to put in rivets (for sizzle) and then tape-wrapped the rivet ends to prevent them from falling out (the easier approach of simply draping the ride with a lightweight metal chain did not occur to me)...then when that $12 metal somehow got bent and developed cracks, I turned it upside down and, voila(!), I had a faux China (used specifically in playing the Genesis song, Man of Our Times)...upon striking this faux China, how "fitting" (perhaps ironic) it was that the divot/bent region was conveniently V-shaped to accommodate my stick...so, for that $12 investment, I eventually got a "custom-made" cymbal... despite the "cymbalic redemption" here, my take-away from that experience became: "If it's cheap and you like the sound, then, as long as it won't break, then buy it."...I once cracked a $70 10" Paiste splash and eventually replaced it with a reasonably sounding $34 no-name 12" (Look, Mom, no cracks!)...I eventually sold my acoustic kit (apt. issue) and got an e-kit - which I have not played since maybe 2010/2011...since then, my knees, my stomach, and the table tops have been my "drumkit"...on occasion I wake up in the middle of the night and spontaneously start playing (e.g., stomach)...the somewhat frustrating thing is when I play better in my half-asleep mode or I "invent" some groove I can't remember when I wake up(!)...anyway, thank you if you have read this far - I'm spilling my drum guts here🥁...keep up the good work...

@@earldrum @Earl Bennett - earldrum Thanks again, Earl... regarding e-kits, there's a negative for me...I enjoy the softer feel of the e-kit, but I noticed that an acoustic kit felt too loud/foreign after I had played my e-kit for a while - and the notion that I feel out of touch (both figuratively and literally) on an acoustic kit makes me feel quite uncomfortable and perhaps inadequate (e.g., losing a skill)...as a solution, I considered a thin plastic or even thin metal cover for rides and (cymbal) edge attachments for crashes to permit more discernable strike/ping...regarding sound level (i.e., being considerate to neighbors, etc.) this relatively louder sound might still only amount to a tapping noise (rather than the full/real cymbal sound)...but it could be a sound-feel compromise...if this has not yet been invented, please, mums-the-word... heehee...

PJ Jackson ... I have tried different heads ... I did Hydraulic heads years ago ... they sound deader ... probably wouldn’t need moon gel to get that muted fat sound.

Earl Bennett - earldrum What do you recommend? I just bought an 6-8-10 set used and want to replace the heads.

PJ Jackson ... I think a two ply head gives you a fatter sound. I have clear Evans G2 heads on mine. But Remo CS black dots are a great head for roto toms or even Pinstripes ... just thoughts

Earl Bennett - earldrum Your roto’s are bigger, do you think 2 ply will sound good on the smaller ones too? Any tips for tuning them up? Appreciate it! Great grooves btw. I really like the sound of that riveted ride on your right too!

PJ Jackson ... it always depends on the sound in your head! Yes, two ply can work if it’s the sound you want. The cymbal is a 19” Zildjian Armand Ride!

That’s a good question? The best way to find RotoToms is on eBay. I’m not sure Remo has them in their catalog! I’ll have to do some research. I’ll talk about this question on my March Ask Earl Anything show! Thanks for the question!

Your head was almost cut off and I had to keep raising and lowering the volume between when you talked and hit the drums...kind of awful. But I certainly appreciate the talk on rototoms...I used to have a set back in the early 80’s...6”...8”...10”...they were cool. Thanks

Michael, thank you for your candor as always. When I did this video (as a request) I had a few time limitations. Now, to be honest I don’t care to hear me talk about drums these days. But that said, some of my friends enjoy it. I tried to use my over head mic for both voice and drums. I should just hook up a SM 58 to a boom, but I hate the way that looks! Of course I should hire a camera man too (I.e., head cut off). These are the limitations of being a one man production team. All this to say, to make my voice loud enough meant the low RotoTom distorted a few times. That’s because I had to raise the volume to loud in Final Cut. I thought my few friends would deal with it because I’m not getting an Emmy for my performance. But like many of my videos that get lots of views I will probably cringe some day for not taking more time on Sunday ... but that’s youtube! Home made videos from amateurs ... and people still love them with there flaws! I’m sorry about the volume issues!
