Jared Falk, metal drummer?
Jared Falk, HEADBANGER?
If you've followed Drumeo for a while, you'll know that Jared isn't known for playing heavy music. But when we asked the drumming community what they wanted to see him cover, Gojira came out on top. They're one of the hottest bands in metal right now, and feature groovy and creative drum parts.
So we challenged Jared to play "Born For One Thing", the first single off their new album, Fortitude (dropped TODAY - go check it out!).
The best part? Unlike his mortal enemy, Dave Atkinson, Jared never plays double bass - so he knew his work was cut out for him. But he wanted to get out of his comfort zone.
In this video you'll see his early reaction to the song's cool triplet snare intro, epic halftime ride section, and tasty ghost notes. Then he shares some vlog clips (frustrations and all!) from his daily practice where he plays through the song to get the form, then slows it down to nail the details (like transitions and double bass patterns, which he ended up doing in a unique way with double strokes).
The night before filming, Jared was nervous he wouldn't be able to do the song justice. But we think he killed it! What do you think?
(P.S. Jared mentions an incredible fundraiser Gojira is spearheading. Bid on auction items from your favorite metal bands to help raise money for Brazil's Indigenous People Articulation, which supports indigenous rights. Here's the link: propeller.la/g...)

MAN this makes me so happy. I'm so happy Mario is getting mainstream attention in the drum world. He is such an inspiration to me and drummers worldwide. He is so much more than a metal drummer, his approach to dynamics, feel, and groove almost has jazzy and funky elements in them, makes sense considering he had a jazz teacher for the longest time! To many metal drummers fall into the hole of sounding too "robotic" but Mario adds that human groove element on top of his super tight double bass and impressive hard hitting technique. He way he "flows" across the drum kit is unparalleled in my humble opinion. So natural and with so much feel. He deserves every award he has gotten! If Mario ever comes out to drumeo, it will be a big hit. Thanks Jared and drumeo for showcasing a sliver of what this band and this drummer has to offer!

The fact that you're doing double strokes on your feet is pretty awesome. I still struggle to do double strokes with my hands lol
@johnknight9150
@johnknight9150 3 жыл бұрын
Double-strokes on the feet are actually really easy, you just need someone to show you how to play heel-toe. It has a reputation for being difficult, but you just need someone next to you to give feedback on your foot motion. I taught a friend who can barely play rock beat one how to play a double-stroke roll (albeit rather sloppy). If he can do it, you can too.
@brandondefalco8843

Drumeo has a video explaining it, but I think Wyatt Stav’s videos on it are better. He provided exercises as well. I struggled with it for years until I watched Wyatt.
@johnknight9150
@johnknight9150 3 жыл бұрын
@@brandondefalco8843 Yeah, Wyatt Stav's video is good. I learned from Derrick Pope's video. There are two kinds of heel-toe, and Drumeo video specifically teaches *not* to play the kind Wyatt and Derrick play, but I think it's a good idea to try both variants. The Drumeo version is more "classically correct", but the other version is much easier to learn and is great for getting cheap and nasty pedals to respond. I would recommend anyone having problems with heel-toe -- without access to someone who can sit next to them and correct their technique -- to watch as many videos on the topic as they can until they get it, as all these videos have different tips and tricks for getting it down. I'm thinking of making a heel-toe troubleshooting video with all the different tips I've come across and common errors. One good tip is to place your foot diagonally along the board instead of straight, which gives you more leverage and emulate a longboard pedal.
@brandondefalco8843
@brandondefalco8843 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnknight9150 I didn’t realize they were teaching separate techniques. I’ll watch again and look for that. Thanks!
@johnknight9150
@johnknight9150 3 жыл бұрын
@@brandondefalco8843 No worries. The difference is whether or not the heel actually hits the footboard. Jared's method doesn't, which is fine, but I didn't get that technique until first I could do the technique where the heel actually hits the footboard.

This blew me away, hats off to both the original drummer for this song for creating such unique drumming and hats off to the instructor for picking it up so quickly and relaying it perfectly. I'm blown away from the start just watching the slow beating of the snare to transition into quick triplets. When I get home I'm definitely going to have to practice! I'm badly disabled so I will never be a "good" drummer or in a band but now I know something I can work on. I struggle with tempo changes and just watching you play I realized I make to large of movements, even when I'm playing as fast as I can. I noticed that on the snare you start with big movements but the faster you play the closer the drumsticks stay to the snare/each other.

This was great. I'd unironically love to watch the entire process of breaking down the song and learning it. Just the entire thing recorded with whatever little updates you feel like providing like the ones you did here. I always love watching other drummers approach new songs.

Oh man. This channel continues to impress. As a drum teacher myself, you guys are quickly becoming both a resource, as well as an inspiration to become better. Gojira has been a favorite of mine for a while now. So happy to see such a great video to showcase their overall work as a group.

P.S. That 5 levels of drumming concept from the Toxicity video would be awesome for some of this. Or for any of it really.

The one handed crash grabs are perfectly executed. Well done sir!!! I started practicing those when I first heard Richard Christy play them on a track from the album The Sound Of Perseverance by the mighty DEATH. RIP Chuck!

Dude, I played drums going on 20 years and I just always assumed I’d never learn how to heel toe partially because I was under the assumption you had to have long board pedals plus I just thought it was out of my reach for some reason but I watched your video and learned it that day. I can’t thank you enough bro, you will always have a special place in my heart! Been tearing up and learning the drums in a new way now. Thanks homie

Excellent job, Jared! What you said is so true: working hard on a song to get any changes, fills and nuances right is sooo rewarding when at then end, you record and/or shoot it, listen to the final product, and end up being proud of yourself. And this is true for all levels of drummers and musicians. Congratulations and keep up the good work on this amazing channel. Cheers!
