I’m not a drummer but my son was. He never played professionally but was in local bands and learned by ear. He just knew what to play. Eventually he got into more of the technical side of things with editing and mastering songs for no pay just to get the word out. Unfortunately he passed away but it was fun to talk with him about music and drums. He fascinated me. I only wish that he had been able to make his music dreams come true. I think he would have been like Chad, just being able to pick up the sticks and play. I love to watch and listen to your assessments of drummers. I may not always understand the technical terms but just to watch drummers play is fascinating to me.

Many of the Drumeo clips the guest drummer listens to a complete (or nearly complete) pass of the song. They often make notes and map out verses and chorus, builds and dips and bridges....etc. Chad listened and jumped in playing literally a few bars into the first pass and just improvised in real time. Even though this isn't an especially complicated song, the improvisation is excellent - he did such an amazing job!

Yeah. Think that often gets overlooked about this performance. If he was just playing by ear to what he is listening to, he'd not be able to set anything up in advance - which he clearly does. So basically what he has to do is think some seconds in advance about what will be coming up judging from the song structure etc. That can be best noticed close to the end, where he seems to have been expecting something different (less quit ending). On all the other parts however he's mostly correct with what he is assuming to come up.
@tiapesi27386 ай бұрын
except if he would have played tool and went in, he couldn't. Predictable musicstructure is often but not always a thing. Let's stay in the Emo/Punk Genre: Greenday's 'Jesus of Suburbia' also vreaks those rules. Which in my opinion is such a beautifull thing when it happenes. But you are absolutely right. Most songst follow a certain structure, only the tempo changes a pop songg lets take fourth and a typical emo/punk song in threes. So, usually the instinct doesn't lead you astray, but it could. Is what I want to say here. What is more important to highlight in Chad's performance here anf even more important (because every musicion knows how a simple song is construction) is how beautiffully he afampts in a change he didn't see coming. He does it with such easy that it neatly blends seemlessly and in my opinion that id what makes this pergormance absolutely SPECTACULAR!

ive watched the video loads of time, still brings goosebumps to see an absolute master for their craft smashing it. his musical ear, anticipation and flexibility is amazing. watching it now you can see how he leaves the tiniest bits of space, a moment of delay to see where the song goes and then jump on it, only ever makes it more incredible to play blind and still perform like this... for me RHCP has always been about Flea (as a former bass player) so i never paid much due to Chad but when you think about it, you cant play with a bunch of musicians and fill arenas without being of equal caliber. seeing other drummers in the series they take a few plays through, they tweak it, polish it and still dont get close the musicality and feel that chad delivered here. nothing taken from them, its an almost impossible job to jump in blind and play perfectly, Chads attitude and just diving in is what shines through. I used to play brass instruments too and could never do Jazz because i couldnt let go of making mistakes and feeling it as i played, which makes my respect for this even greater.

I believe that the fact he is used to play improvised jams with John and Flea for multiple years has helped him with this challenge. On those jams he has to experiment different things on the spot by trying guessing where the other two are going. I remember wanting to learn but he was never home obviously bc he was 17-18 so he was working or hanging out with friends. One time he was home he said he would teach me but he didn’t want anything happening to the set if I were to accidentally break something since it was his dads as well and was very expensive. Since then I’ve always eyeballed a drum set and I would always bounce my legs to the music with the beats. I’m 19yo now so hopefully I can get an electric one since I’m moving into an apartment soon and eventually move to an acoustic one. I don’t want to do it as a job but as a hobby along with art and reading.

loved your breakdown with this and the insights at the end. I used to be in a band where I used to just record drums for a few mins with just a rough tempo and the band had nothing written. After my takes the band would write the parts and it was a very different way of studio sessions than any band ive been in. Was a great outcome though. I also LOVE the fact Chad was nervous doing this. Reminds you that even the greats have the struggles

the story about Chad´s audition for RHCP is just epic. It´s on Anthony Kiedis book. He´s been doing what he just did on this video for DECADES.

I love seeing everyones reaction to this. The very first time i watched it, I knew people would go crazy over it. It's still hard to believe he's never heard it before, because he nails it. Goes to show that once you understand music so well, you can play along to most songs!

His rhythm is too crazy. He understands music better than most people can walk.

What blew me away with seeing Chad Smith live for the first time, was how natural it was for him. In the studio is different from playing live, but wow he has it all. He is 61 years old and still an absolute champion.

Everytime I see Will Ferrell imitate Chad Smith, he gets better & better. He's been steadily chopping wood. Practice makes perfect, kiddos. 🙂

Drumeo and reaction videos like yours, has introduced me to so many legendary humans. And it gives me a good feeling and perspective on life in general.
