You really need to check out “Introduction,” the first song on their first album, written by Kath to introduce this new band. Also, the entire “Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon,” Pankow’s masterpiece containing Make Me Smile and Color my World. The whole needs to be heard as one. The record label chopped it up for am radio play.

Now that you’ve heard the studio version, you MUST go watch the live version on KZbin. Danny’s solo is beyond amazing. Talk about being right on the edge of falling apart and pushing to the limits. Danny is the reason I started playing drums back in the 70s. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet him several times and he is just the greatest guy!!

This is not some obscure jazz track from an early unknown Chicago album. Chicago VII was a million seller, as was their previous 6 albums, starting with their iconic debut, Grammy Hall of Fame inductee, The Chicago Transit Authority. Thanks to their incredible talent for melodic songwriting, Chicago was able to put out albums with big hit singles and also highlighting their avant-garde inclinations and impressive musicianship. Chicago is simply one of the great American rock bands, by any measure.

Chicago VII is certified Platinum and peaked at #1 on Billboard top 200 albums (can't peak any higher). It produced two top 10 singles and another that barely missed (#11), two of which were #1 on the Easy Listening and Adult Contemporary charts. This was a hit rock band at the (first) peak of their career.

So glad you got to Danny and Chicago! This is a choice track pick from the early Chicago catalog. During the early Chicago years, known as the Terry Kath era of Chicago, from 1969 to 1978, they had a total of 7 members in the band, including 3 in the horn section. You really need to check out their video concert from 1970 at Tanglewood. Epic/legendary performance from all the band members and you can see Danny in action.

At this point, Chicago had eight members. They started with 7 members and added Brazilian percussionist Laudir de Oliveira first as a session player on. Chicago VI, then he became a full member with this album, Chicago VII. Danny also shows his skills on many other tracks, he had 2 tracks on 25 Or 6 To 4, making for a great background on Terry Kath's incredible guitar solo. "Poem 58" on the debut album as The Chicago Transit Authority is 9 minutes of PURE FUNK led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. In the sixth movement of the seven movement suite "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon", the track is "To Be Free". Seraphine is BLISTERING and boggles the mind. The 7th movement 'Now More Than Ever" closes with Seraphine and the horns building up like an epic Cecile B. DeMille movie theme.

Always loved “Devil’s Sweet”. They were certainly very poppy on their singles but had a strong artistic streak early on and the first third of Chicago VII was made up of jazz fusion instrumentals. As was the original plan for the album before they also recorded the more pop/rock orientated songs and got a double album out of if all. There’s nine musicians on the track, including the guest synth soloist in the “cop chase” bit. Some extra percussion supplied by future member Laudir deOliveira. Horns include soprano sax and flugelhorn in the main, the trombonist comes in on the middle bit and sounds like it’s multitracked, as was customary in the Caribou Ranch era. Production by James William Guercio, engineering by Wayne Tarnowski, who also worked on the first couple of Weather Report albums. I agree that the stereo panning is brilliant, not just the drums but other instruments too.

The sound recording quality of this era has yet to be beaten. Amazing analog tape recording. A lot has been lost when moving to digital recording. Even at the peak of the solo, no mushy mess, each instrument and element of the kit is perfectly clear.

This album was recorded at their producer James William Guercio's Caribou Ranch studio in Nederland Colorado, as were some of the other Terry Kath era albums, Chicago VI, VIII, X, and XI. Guercio was fired by Chicago after the release of Chicago XI but before Terry Kath died.

Chicago is my favourite band since the very first album "Chicago Transit Authority" which I heard in 1970. Their first 7 albums are pure quality. Most people know them on ly of their later more commercial music. For me Chicago in their first period are the best ever (alongside Beatles and Beach Boys).

I feel sorry for the folks that met Chicago in the 80s when Peter Cetera (bass) changed it into a ballad band. The original 7 members led by Terry Kath on guitar had soul and true rock roots. Triple harmonies from Cetera, Kath and Robert Lamm on keys challenged the vocal stylings of groups like 3 Dog Night. The brass section of Pankow (trombone), Parazaider(sax) and Loughnane (trumpet) gave them a sound that separated them from the pack. Danny was the cream on the top of this sundae with almost madman drumming bordering on loss on control. You mention a "greatest hits" of Chicago, the album Chicago IX is actually one of the best hits compilations ever with every song a clinic in itself.

This composition is Danny Seraphine and Chicago truly pushing the envelope of creative genius. The odd instrument that is heard during Danny's brush solo is a Waterphone (also known as the Ocean Harp) played by percussionist Laudir de Oliveira. It is part drum, part harp. The effect heard in this composition is Laudir playing the harp portion of this instrument with a violin bow. Late comment, but here it goes: Yes, Chicago began as a very adventurous, experimental, fusion band, but it's important to remember this was Chicago VII, their seventh release. While the first three albums (all double albums) were heavy in improvisation and pieces designed to showcase each member's chops, the fourth was a four-record live set from their week at Carnegie hall. After V and VI (single albums with several big commercial hits), there was a little disagreement over what direction VII should take, with some wanting to return to a more adventurous time and others wanting to continue pushing for hits. In the end, both got what they wanted with their final double album, with the first two sides being almost entirely instrumental offerings like this and the last two sides producing three top 20 hits (6, 9, 11), two of which also hit #1 on the Easy Listening and Adult Contemporary charts. Instrumentation on the album consisted of Danny Seraphine (drums), Laudir de Oliviera (percussion), Robert Lamm (keys), Terry Kath (guitar), Peter Cetera (bass), James Pankow (trombone), Lee Loughnane (trumpet), Walt Parazaider (winds). The slow section of Devil's Sweet is is 12/8 with a flugelhorn and soprano sax duet playing lead. It then drops into, I believe, 2/2 punctuated by quarter note triplets on the kick drum and the horns switch to trumpet, alto, and trombone. Often overlooked in the drumming, guitar, and keyboard madness, I think an equal dose of appreciation needs to go to the bassist, Peter Cetera, who as the face of Chicago's later incarnation as an '80s love ballad machine always gets overlooked as a player. Another stand-out for me on this album is Prelude to Aire and Aire, the former being an improvisational flute solo over open percussion and the latter being an upbeat horn ensemble piece in 14/8. Definitely not typical fare for a chart-topping rock band at the peak of their popularity. All three of these were on the first side and Seraphine shares writing credit with Parazaider and Pankow.

I loved Chicago from the first time I heard them in the late 60's. Danny took lessons from Chuck Flores & Papa Jo Jones in the 70's & he was influenced by the best of the jazz drummers who came before him as well as his contemporaries Mitch Mitchell, Tony Williams, and Buddy of course. For a while I took lessons from Chuck & he was a great teacher for hand technique as well as jazz and rock studies. Chuck took lessons from Murry Spivak the great hand technique & reading teacher as well. Thanks Andrew for a great look at Danny's brilliant playing on this track!!

Yep, 60s/70s Chicago, up to around 78ish, is a VERY different animal, where even their pol was heavily jazz influenced. After Terry Kath died, in 78, and for all intents and purposes, Peter Cetera took over primary song writing duties, they turned into the band that began the 80s, and for the rest of their career, the jazz influences took more and more of a back seat to Cetera’s pop sensibilities. So the Chicago most people know from the 80s, is a pale ghost of its former self. They were still a great band, but I lost interest in them during that time. The band that did Color My World, Saturday In The Park, Make Me Smile and all the extraordinary AM radio fodder from 68-77ish is the Chicago I think of, when someone mentions them. Just AWESOME band, they really were, and this spectacular song is a perfect example of the potential they had. Even my Jazz instructor, in college, who was a diehard Jazz fan, was a huge fan of Chicago!

I think your timeline is spot on. I gave them until Hot Streets (which would have been Chicago 12) but after that I lost interest somewhat. The 80s were a grim time for progressive and experimental music fans -- or seemed to be. Looking back I see there was still experimentation, just not by the same artists.

Actually Chicago Transit Authority through Chicago XI were the Terry Kath albums. He died January 23, 1978, not long after Chicago XI was released.

VIII does have Terry Kath's tribute to Jimi Hendrix with "Oh, Thank You Great Spirit" and he also shines on "Hideaway" and "Ain't It Blue?". X and XI have some good material too (Walt's sax on X's "Once Or Twice" along with Kath's lead vocals wow!), but after that it was downhill starting with Hot Streets, the first post-Kath album.

Well world of alleged Jazz & Music experts… Chicago was comprised of the most classically trained musicians who evolved initially as rock first jazz fusion with the most advanced and amazing arrangements, incredible artists each in their own rights. They usually played this live in concert to allow each member to get rejuvenated- Danny’s drum solos of 8-10 minutes would typically lead into a major hit song ~ Does Anybody Know What Time & others. Definitely late 60’s & 70’s movie genre as noted. Their 3 horn section players - 21:38 trumpet, trombone, sax and clarinet flute sounded like a 10/11 piece jazz band. I think Chicago simply did this for themselves to demonstrate just how gifted and rooted they were in their sophisticated musical instruments and arrangements.

They became mainstream pop music slaves. Huge money machine. Still later some good song-crafting too. Often nice brass arangements. After Chicago 7 I stopped listening.
