Andrew needs to hear Sleep. Matt Pike was the guitarist there before forming High on Fire, and is currently with them after the reunion.

I’m not big on the classification/differences of metal genres, but I usually hear HOF referred to as Sludge Metal

I view it as Conan-core dude; never got sludge, which I think of Eyehategod or something along those lines, most high on fire is way too fast. Hence the non ironic conan the barbarian classification. Reminds me more of a motörhead/venom style approach to speed and energy, with my apologies for saying so, but some slight power metal influence seeped in somewhere I would think.

Speed/Stoner. In my opinion sludge Is more alternative, underground. High on Fire is more Classic metal than Grief, Eyehategod, Soilemt green, Buzzoven or Crowbar. But i love It too. The Borders between these subgeneres Is thin.

A WALL OF GREASE AND GRIME.....HELL YES!!! Love this album the most. They are the beautiful filthy underbelly of sludge/doom/metal. It is a visceral feeling to their raw primal style. Bloody Knuckles is a great Sabbath worship track on this album.

I'm a bassist, been fortunate to player with some incredible drummers, a couple have really struggled playing super-slow stuff and leaving space and losing time in that space, but I've played with a good for that have been phenomenal at most tempos. Should definitely check out some Sleep. It's a tangent, but there's a whole (indie-ish) slow-core genre that can be super-beautiful - Low "Monkey" Live on KEXP is a super example of minimalist playing.

Seen them once in a theater type venue in my town. The singer/guitar player had a wall of orange cabs and amps behind him (9 cabs, I think) I was told he was quite mad the venue techs prevented him from putting anymore on stage!

High on Fire live are awesome. Absolute destruction. Other bands that tangentially hit similar buttons: Neurosis (tribal), Clutch (crazy understated groove), Eyehategod (turns the sludge up to 666).

I agree this is one of their slowest, most crushing songs, and they have many. If you want the other extreme, I would check out the songs Luminiferous and Slave the Hive, both from their album Luminiferous which was the follow up to this album. They are fast and crushing.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Kurt Cobain, being from the same home town of Aberdeen, WA, was absolutely enamored with them, and followed them around for a while, even wanted to be in the band, before deciding to form Nirvana. They arent always the easiest listen, though. Like High On Fire, they were essentially a sludge band, and perhaps one of the first to be called such, but while most of the music is very similar, it can range from “slower than molasses in January” to near Hardcore Punk levels of speed. To “ease” you into them, Id say try Night Goat, Euthanasia, or Honey Bucket. Also, another Grunge band that I dont think you’ve covered yet, is Mudhoney. Before Nirvana came along and recorded their first album, Bleach, Mudhoney (and their immediate predecessor, Green River, which also spawned Mother Love Bone, which eventually became Pearl Jam) were the darlings of Seattle, and Sub Pop Records biggest sellers! They, too, occasionally can be sludgy, such as my fave song of theirs, “Sweet Young Thing Aint Sweet No More”, but really they were much closer to punk and garage, like “In ‘n’ Out Of Grace”, “Touch Me Im Sick”, and their biggest hit, (if you can call it that, having just missed out on the top 20 of the Billboard Alternative list), “Suck You Dry”.
