Man, I remember this so clearly. This was when Slipknot was really on the upshot, they were touring Australia I think and had a killer set there just after the Volume 3 release. “Duality” and “Before I Forget” sent them to the stratosphere. . Knowing Joey had just finished his gig with Slipknot, no small feat, and then went into this gig with such obvious energy, it shows the power of passion to have such energy. I can’t think of many things that could energize anyone than having to save a Metallica show. I mean, aren’t many of us here who play instruments here because of these bands? Man, legends.

Dave Lombardo played only a couple songs, but he apparently said how he didn't really know any Metallica songs past Master of Puppets album, or just the 80s in general. Joey grew up playing and listening to all the songs. Apparently as the show went on Metallica threw songs at him they never even rehearsed beforehand because of how well he was doing. A lot of Slipknot was right behind Joey on the kit and were watching the entire show. Corey Taylor of Slipknot talks about the whole thing on a podcast, he obviously recaps much better than I can here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKbEhGWEfdF7mtU&ab_channel=KNOTFEST (Skip to 6:45 on the video to hear them talking about Joey filling in) I remember coming across this video as a kid and it was easily one of my favorite videos of Slipknot/Joey. I was at this gig. It was Download 04. There was a two hour wait for Metallica who were headlining that night. They came out before and James addressed the crown and said Lars got sick on the way to the gig. (it came out after that he’d had a massive panic attack on the way to gig). The wait was them practising with drummers they could grab from who had played and was around that day. They opened with Battery and the Four Horsemen with Save Lombardo, Lars’ tech played Fade to Black mid set, but the rest was played by Joey Jordison. It was amazing. In all they only played an hour as that was all the time they could practice and they came on so late because of the delay. Joey played Seek and Destroy, Enter Sandman, Creeping Death, Last Caress, Wherever I May Roam, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Sad but True and NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. Seeing him reserved for that was amazing.

I was there that day, it was awesome! Lars was apparently taken ill, and other drummers from the day took turns. Not something you see every day either. Dave Lombardo played, Lars' drum tech did fade to black and Joey did indeed play Creeping Death and a few others. The night was delayed by at least an hour but was something special to see! Just adding a bit, I doubt he was paid to step in, more like did it as he wanted to help out and grew up playing the songs! Joey was awesome!

I was there that day. It’s was one of the most incredible things to witness. Lars was sick and couldn’t perform so that afternoon/evening, drummers from all the other bands went to practice with Metallica so they could play. When they came out (I think just over and hour late but they were forgiven for it instantly) they had selected 3 drummers. Dave Lombardo from Slayer, Fleming Larsen who was Lars drum tech at the time (R.I.P 🤘🏻) and Joey who ended up doing the majority of the set. That was my first year at Download Festival 2004 and I’ve been 14 times including 04. That Metallica set will alway rank as one of the best ever

From what I’ve heard ( I haven’t gone through the comments to see if it’s been said already ) Slipknot had just finished their gig and James hetfield was backstage asking every drummer if they could fill in for lars who had been rushed to hospital, James seen Joey and asked him if could fill in, and without hesitation Joey said absolutely!. In a interview later on Joey has been quoted as saying he went off ‘muscle memory’ from when he was younger growing up listening to Metallica. So long story short, He had No rehearsals, No awareness of what was happening beforehand, and about 10mins notice before going on stage (hence the face mask still on). Unreal!!!

If Metallica ask you to jam you say yes, i bet Joey knew a handfull of Metallica songs without thinking twice.

That was during Download Festival. A few different drummers played with Metallica. Joey played also „The four horsemen” and „Seek and destroy”. There was a moment when James was trying to stop him as he was playing really fast and powerful. And that is how Metallica should sound alike.

If memory serves me, Lars bailed on them right before the show and none of the drummers who filled in got to rehearse. Halfway through Joey's filling in James just turns around and says "Joey you rock man!" I can only imagine the grin on his face having one of his influences say that too in front of so many people. The whole show is on KZbin from a camera crew with better audio. Totally worth a watch.

Dave had to leave after 2 songs because he didn't know any of the other ones (he went backstage to learn the others). Joey probably played classic Metallica hundreds of times in his youth. No point in stopping the show for Dave to learn since Joey knew all the songs already.

Joey was such a maestro on the drums even if he didn’t ’know’ the song, his skill and improvisational abilities were so good he could just play his own lines and make it work.
@blppt2 жыл бұрын
@@canatolakhoemini6728 I don't think he (Joey) did---he just knew all the songs since he grew up playing them, unlike Dave, who probably had never played a Metallica song in his life (contemporaries generally don't cover each other's songs). IIRC, nobody had much notice that Lars wasn't going to make it until a couple of hours before the show, so no rehearsals would have been possible for Dave and Joey.
