They were from Raleigh, North Carolina. Their style changed >drastically< across the three different periods of their history. This was the only album they did in a progressive thrash/groove style. They were hardcore punk before that and then stoner/doom metal/heavy rock after. Here's the studio version - I would >highly< recommend listening to the entire album from start to finish. I think Mullen's performance in particular is quite extraordinary. I love his creative use of the ride throughout: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gamakGOvfbl1o6M Two albums later - Wiseblood - could fit with the grunge thing you were hearing.

Reed was my first real boyfriend. I met him in Richmond at a hardcore show…pre-long hair, straight edge. I was in the studio with them for the recording of Eye for an Eye with the original singer, Eric (Daddy). I went with them on their first mini-tour in Woody’s milk truck. I used to set up his drum kit. Lol. Punk rock girl. Good times. Good guy.

After listening all these years I only saw them for the first time last year. You have cool subscribers to request this...and hats to you Andrew for doing a reaction. Andrew - welcome to the COConformity brotherhood! The album “Blind” (that this song is off of) is a killer drum album. Definitely worth listening to. The vocals aren’t great - as you just witnessed. After that album the singer left, and the guitarist Pepper took over singing, and they became a more Sabbath-based Southern rock band. Check out their song “Albatross” - not necessarily the best drumming wise I suppose, but an amazing song and one of their biggest songs.

Awesome, love this reaction, despite the terrible video quality. Lots of excellent punk drummers to check out … next up, Lucky Lehrer from the Circle Jerks, who has a drum workshop on KZbin, is quite broad with his styles, and who Flipside magazine called The Best Punk Rock Drummer Of All Time, and Earl Hudson from Bad Brains, a jazz quartet that changed to hardcore Punk and Reggae. As with this video, finding good quality video isnt easy, but any recommendations for best tracks, here, yall? Maybe Circle Jerks Live At The Fleetwood 1980, the footage from Decline Of Western Civilization? 5 songs in under 6 minutes lol As for Bad Brains … maybe… I dunno, I looked and cant find any good footage

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Anytime Andrew! Hopefully it helps :). The biggest problem with punk, especially Hardcore, is that its often far too fast to really show off their real chops, but a lot of these guys were pretty great! It takes a LOT of skill and endurance to play that fast! Dave Grohl was in the DC Hardcore scene before joining Nirvana. He was in a band called Scream, and while the music they made at the time he was on skins was tamer, he still had to play the earlier stuff like Came Without Warning … just for the helluvit, check this one out! Compared to Nirvana, Queens Of The Stone Age and Foo Fighters, thisll blow your mind! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZ3QZoaoad9geaM

Metal is usually music made for musicians. And "extreme " metal is like the Olympics of music. It's kinda the same reason people like watching cars go fast in a circle for four hours, or watching dudes beat each other up in a ring. It's bad ass for the sake of being bad ass. And once in a while, its beautiful.

Thank you BOB for requesting Reed! I'm a scumbag rhythm guitarist and singer (so I have no drum cred, except playing along to ZZ Top and Sisters of Mercy at home in my spare time), and when I bought "Blind" and "Deliverance" from CoC in the mid 90s Mr Mullin's drumming made me pay extra special attention to what I did and didn't like about drummers, and what made them unique in their own genres. Compared to other drummers of the time and space in which he lived and performed, I always found Reed to be bouncier and more fun to listen to. He had an extra snappiness to his style that made me so happy. Kind of like the way I get giddy watching old Keith Moon footage. I love seeing a new drummer get introduced to what he did, thank you Andrew.

I put this on a playlist for a drummer the other day. I wish you'd have had a chance to talk about the studio version b/c Mullin's playing on that entire record is both very technical and very free - you can hear it in, I believe, in the first fill he does in this live clip. I don't think anything Mullin ever did before or after matches the precision or creativity of his drumming on that record. He's quite inventive, but in a way that feels spontaneous, as if he's feeling his way through the fill and being really loose with the timing, like he might not even land on the one coming out of a fill but that it would be fine b/c he's so locked into the overall groove. He was in top form back then. The music they played after wasn't as challenging - it was more straight rock and roll, so it didn't demand these kinds of drum patterns.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums No worries Andrew. They've toured with some awesome bands ftom hardcore punk and crossover in the early to midv80's on to more more rock and heavy mainstream bands as their sound evolved. The 2014 gig at Kings Arms was a return to the early hardcore punk style as a power trio. Then back as a heavy rock, metal four piece in 2020. Phenomenal. Tours and shows with Faith No More, Guns n Roses, Ozzy, Metallica, Cavalera Conspiracy, Soundgarden, Bad Brains, Megadeth, Alice in Chains, Johnny Cash, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Mötörhead to name a few. Obviously well respected and highly regarded by their peers and fans across multiple genres.

They are from Raleigh NC and there aren't any really good video recordings of any of their shows. I've looked everywhere. Blind was the only CD that featured Karl Agell on vocals. They were starting to blow up and I thought and still think letting him go, for whatever reason, was a big mistake. They had some good CD's after this but, nothing like Blind. Blind was a masterpiece not unlike say, Megadeth's Rust in Peace. There was a big scene in NC back at this time and people were saying it was going to be the next Seattle. Big money rolled in with an influx of people and it became the 3 largest banking state in the nation. It basically killed the scene. Along with COC you had Stuck Mojo, Animal Bag, Firehouse, Blind Melon all had been signed and then you had bands like Buster Rogue, Jam Pain Society, and God's Water with labels looking at them along with a ton of other bands waiting in the wings. It was a diverse scene too, with everything from Alt rock to Thrash Metal and the scene just fell apart. How do I know all this? I was there!

Thanks so much Andrew for reviewing! Definitely cam corder quality. There's better quality newer stuff, and when Reed wasn't able to fulfill his duties, his drum tech filled in and did a tremendous job. These guys even did a skynard cover later on. This brings me back to playing small clubs, including a famous one with a support post mid stage in my hometown. Just wanted to support the channel and honor Reed's memory. They've got some cool stuff in their catalog if it's your cup of tea...or coffee! Cheers!
