I met Dave at a drum clinic back in 1989. He was touring with Chick Corea and it was a great experience. He is as serious as it gets. His playing is just phenomenal. Thanks for sharing.

Weckl my hero. He's got the most dynamic musical solos of all drum solos. Love love love weckl.

The guy is from another planet! Endless amounts of great drummers blowing chops on YT, but Weckl's seamless flow, silky smooth licks flowing perfectly through the song is just mind blowing.

Just got an email from Garey yesterday only to hear of his tragic passing last night. Then this video appeared on my KZbin feed. It was a privilege knowing him and my heart goes out to all who had the same privilege and who loved him......

I have seen Dave many times. As the house photographer at a NYC Jazz club I have been lucky enough to stand to Dave's floor tom side and watch him from the side from less that 10 feet away. He is as good at it gets, simple as that. His technique is damn near flawless. No wasted movements. This is a guy that spent considerable time in the woodshed and it shows. You don't get THIS great by accident. Never tire of watching Dave play and I try to catch him whenever he's in New York.

Holy Cow. One of my favorite Drummers/Musicians. I got to go to see him at a drum workshop in my town. Only about a 100 people. sat up close to the front row and got to ask him a couple of questions. what a great work shop and what a nice man. He is extra special with his skills. Thanks Garey

Few things to note in addition to what you pointed out below: 1) His command over tuning is unparalleled. 2) His very relaxed touch on the drums is something to be strived for (something you have mastered as well) 3) Playing very simple patterns to the highest level possible - making them sound more complex than they actually are.

I love so many drummers but Weckl is the only one i feel can play ANYTHING at will. He does not seem to have any boundaries at all.

Omar Hakim can play anything. Weckl is fantastic, but there is a feel to Hakim's playing that moves me every time. Time for a Simon Phillips "analysis" --wow! wow wow! woooow! I also prefer Manu Katche. Weckl sounds a bit machine like to me. Love him on brushes, though.

Great Tune to pic cause Dave grooves soo hard here (besides from being awesome in every other way). The way he pushes the verse with those 8th notes in the hihat is just so fulfilling.

Does anyone know what happened to Garey? It's 2/25/24 and I haven't seen a video from him in a couple of years. Did anything happen to him? I certainly hope not. He was one of the nicest guys on the internet. I miss his reactions.

Nice channel man. Very insightful and cool comments on the spot. I appreciate that you don’t like metal - HOWEVER - it’d be so awesome to see you react to, analyze and comment on the Swedish polyrythmic masters and pioneers Meshuggah. The playthrough of the song ”Clockworks” is the one to check out. Thanks in advance! 😎

You need to expand your Wecklness. He is just playing what's presented. I agree dry and a bit boring for him, way below his capability. One of the best on the planet IMHO.
